Hi, I just bought a new asus q550lf.
I am going to be using it a lot for voice recording, but a problem, when I use audacity and record myself with the built in mic, there is a bad static problem. I don't mean there is loud static background noise, I mean every half a second or so, there is a loud static spike type sound. I don't know how to fix this.

It's more likely the mic on the webcam. Neither internal cameras nor their microphones are of very good quality, especially on low to middle end systems.

It's possible, though that the "spikes" are DPC latency (more info on DPC latency found here).

If the problem is a poor microphone, your best bet will be to get an aftermarket, external one and connect and use that instead of the webcam mic.

Than, I just downloaded and tried it out. I recorded some music from my phone and also took the chance to see if those were stereo mics on top. The good thing is it worked like a charm, I got no static, although sound seemed a bit warbly. Probably what happens when a poor quality mic is recording form a port quality speaker. Sad thing is those are not stereo mics, my guess is one is used for noise cancellation.

The space for the hardware is pretty limited and since things like microphones and webcams are sort of an afterthought, even though they come standard nowadays, you almost never find a GOOD internal mic and/or cam on any laptop. :(

Some models including Q550LF have decent stereo microphone, but not all of them.
Also, you can update the audio driver to the latest version to see if it helps with recording quality.
