Does anyone know if this laptop will have a MUX Switch? Also, how much wattage the GPU is set up to use?

I'm currently debating between ordering one of the following:

    https://www.gentechpc.com/product-p/asus-g733qs-xs98q.htm

    https://www.eluktronics.com/Prometheus-XVII/

The Eluktronics definitely has a MUX switch, and definitely has the GPU limited to 150W.

The ASUS however....doesn't mention wattage, or the existence of a MUX switch. If it has a MUX Switch, and is giving the GPU at least 150W, I intend to order it.

The ASUS is shipping with a 280W charger though, compared to 230W with the Eluktronics model. This gives me hope that it might be giving the GPU 150W, or even potentially 200W.

yes, strix scar 17 will have mux switch. refer their spec which indicate adaptive sync. afaik, adaptive sync only work in dedicated mode

    MAX-17 Ultra
    • AMD Ryzen 7 5800H 8 Cores - 16 Threads (3.2-4.4GHz Max Boost Clock) + 16GB GDDR6 VRAM NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 (Max-P TDP: 115 Watts, OC Options: TGP Adjustable up to 125 Watts + 15 Watts via Dynamic Boost for a maximum of 140 Watts!*)

Looks like a win to me.
I doubt the extra 10 watts will make the difference.

I would like to know, though, how this "adaptive sync" technology works, as it's the first time I see it in notebooks specifications. Is it basically a freesync marked as "g-sync compatible", and so, does it have a working range? I hope everything will be clear.

I'm also interested about noise level. Asus in their commercial promo stated that "it's under 45dB in turbo mode". I really doubt it will be totally true (it also depends on how they calculate dBs), but still I'd be interested to know how much of that statement is bulls**t.

The inclusion of adaptive sync does not seem to determine if it comes with a MUX switch, though- the Strix G17 has adaptive sync listed in the ASUS site's features list but definitely does not have a MUX switch (or advanced optimus, for that matter)- see GizmoSlipTech's most recent video where he confirms the only way to bypass the iGPU is by hooking up a monitor directly (via the DisplayPort/USB-C port, not the HDMI port which still routes through the iGPU). I'm hoping that the Scar and Zephyrus Duos don't have the same issue and would love if someone who has actually had a chance to use either machines could confirm.

Ultrabookreview in its review of the Scar 17 2021 seems to say it has a switch that automatically changes between the two. Don't know if it is Optimus or another thing, though it should be thorough to be sure.

It seems to have a little software mux in the armory crate.

It's looking like the options are get advanced optimus or find one that dosent have any form of it whatsoever.

Now the problem is, will this method hamper performance when not plugged in to external monitor? Apparently like it is in the Strix G17 2021, as reported in a couple of videos atm.

I really hope not, and that the Scar will be different.

Yea, I THINK there is a setting in the Crate to turn optimus off. I wouldnt quote me on it for sure.

At about 1 min 20 seconds he lays it out how it works.

Ultrabookreview posted a followup to their review: https://www.ultrabookreview.com/44639-rog-scar-17-g733qs-follow-up/

Unfortunately, it seems the Scar 17 suffers from the same issue as the G17, so if you want to absolutely maximize your FPS you'll definitely need to hook it up to an external monitor. Still unsure about the Duo SE, but Ultrabookreview's first impressions post about it implies it will also have the same limitation.

GizmoSlipTech was unable to undervolt AMD G17. Shame, seems it is ultimately set by Asus. (Skip to 8:23 in below video)

Guys, I'm really sad this most likely won't have a MUX switch and no way to undervolt. I had my heart set on this laptop as my everything computer- gaming, 3d modeling & animation, learning Python, etc, but I really don't want to shell out extra money to buy an external monitor just to bypass Optimus. Are we sure there's no way to bypass Optimus in the software (Armory)?

Unfortunately AMD cpus in laptops can't be undervolted, as for now, there is no tool that can do that (Throttlestop doesn't support AMD cpus and it won't).
The only existing tool is Ryzen Controller, which allows to tweak some TDP-related options, like disable boost or set TDP max, boost duration, and so on.

Still, those cpu temperatures worries me for the long-term usability. Well, this is the price for getting lower noise levels. At least there is always the option to set manual fan control, better than nothing I guess.
I wonder if temps are better on the Ryzen 7 5800h + RTX 3070 combo...

Based on what I read, the gap is much more when resolution is lower and fps output is over 150-200, otherwise the gap is around 2-10 fps max. So if you're not an esport player you could live with that, I hope.

I personally don't care about undervolting given the excellent temps and performance. A lot of my undervolting in intel processors did almost nothing and crashed my laptop more times than I can admit. It use to be fine in the 8th gen and below, but 9th gen and above, intel didn't leave much wiggle room with the recycled 14nm architecture.

Bypassing optimus is definitely something asus should allow. Although the perf gains are on a game basis (as you can attest from the youtube video). I'm confident more updates from nvidia and asus should enable more control. The ryzen controller app could be updated too, to allow more control. Having dropped asus back in the gl703 I'm very impressed with all the feedback they've incorporated since.

TechniQualities benchmarked the Scar 17 at 10,649 in Time Spy (10,794 graphics, 9,901 CPU) and I imagine if you hooked it up to an external monitor and tweaked fan/etc settings you could probably push that number up. Curiously, he benchmarked the Duo SE (similar internal specs, 3080+5900HX) at 11,019 Time Spy (11,277 graphics, 9,755 CPU)- he didn't post GPU/CPU TDPs during the test so I wonder if there were differences in the dynamic boosts being applied, but regardless, should give good baselines for what to expect from the 3080 115+15w cards.

Also interested in the combination of 5900HX and 3080 offered by this machine. However, it would be much more appealing if it could offer 19:10 screen to get rid of the thick chin. Also not a fan its design language with a fat hip and sad that seems more and more brands follow the same trend.

Found out the reason why the Scar 17 is only limited to a 115w+15w RTX 3080 even though other 17 inch medium sized laptops have 150w+15w RTx 3080s

    internals-3.jpg

Heck even the Zephyrus G laptops have 115w+15w RTX 3080s

They are just wasting the space that should have been used to improve cooling just so that they can re-use parts from the Scar 15. This sort of corner cutting business is unacceptable on a flaghship laptop. Shame on you Asus

    got mine last week,
ran a few benches, can only get so far in turbo mod with light OC https://www.3dmark.com/spy/18000908
the manual mod tried all kinds of combinations with no luck in better perf...
I'm still thinking of returning it to get a better 3080 (AW MSI...) but will it improve that much, CPU will be old Intel 10th?..

As always, gpu > cpu, so the priority would be to get a better gpu.

That said, if you can score a 5800h/hx + RTX 3080 150w+15w that'd definitely be the best option. Maybe check if custom laptop makers offer it.

Clevo has stagnated in the past few years and have fallen behind. Custom chassis from msi and tongfang are the way to go nowadays.

I looked at a few RTX 3080 laptops and they all seem to do 135w+15w instead of 150w+15w like msi and alienware, guess theres no choice unless you want to shunt mod it

thanks, silly question, do you actually think it will be possible (if cooling allows it) in the future to turn a 115+15w 3080 into a 150+15w one? (easier than to turn a maxq into a maxp or just the same thing)

Yeah, if vbios cross flashing still works this gen you can cross flash a 150w onto a 115w one.

If not you can still completely remove the power limit by shunt modding

Yes, there is a lot of unused space in that chassis, but the main thing that bothers me is why Asus insisted on keeping small fans when they could actually have easily put in larger ones with lower rpms and even lower noise.

Anyway, between 135W and 150W units, I really doubt that 15W will make any noticeable difference. Still far behind the real RTX 3080 tdp unfortunately.

Mmm maybe, with some home-made engineering (though you'd still need adequate fans that fits), but can't say for sure.

Yeah I know, it is based on the ga104, but it was just to say that -in any case- it would be still far from a desktop variant, so between the two wattages even the 135W might be a good choice.

It'll only make a marginal difference since the main reason why larger laptops can run more silently is because they have larger heatsinks so the fans can spin at a lower speed to achieve the same cooling effect.

Which evidently is not the case with the Scar 17.

    Profit

They could have put larger fans and heatsinks but instead reused parts from the scar 15 so that they can increase their profit margins.

Less development work, lower material costs by using smaller heatsinks, lower part prices since they are buying more of the same parts, higher profits. Its a win win for Asus and a lose lose for consumers.

I know, but even only larger fans would have made the laptop run more or less at the same temperature, but hopefully a tad quieter (even though, from what I read, is still much quieter than last gen Scar III, but they just put in liquid metal and change thermal control behaviours).

But anyway, don't know which laptops you're referring to, from my experience I can say that I've had many Clevo barebones in the last years, the heatsink pipes were almost the same in number compared to many pre-assembled machines, and the heatsinks overall dimension was just a little larger. Temperatures in games were the same, if not even worse in some cases than a smaller laptop with same cpu and gpu tdp. In fact I still think thermal management in Clevos is almost always bad, on both hardware and software. like very easy filtration of dust, insane air vents obstruction and really simplistic fan management on both OS and bios level. So it all depends on many other factors too.

As for the profit, yeah, I think I can say it was just a rethorical question.

sorry for the delay, I preordered it in a french shop (fr I am) so no luck for you guys I guess.
That said I am really tempted to return it to get a full 3080 AWare after all the optimus + chassis + 115W surpises
the only thing keeping me is the 5900HX somehow more "future proof" but should I?..

it is not 135W btw, it is 115 + 15W but I got some peak readings around 132-133 in HWInfo not sure if that means that those +15W could be hackable.
However I think that 150W gpus are boosted too so 150+xxW right?

No, I wasn't referring to the Scar indeed, but to Eluktronic and XMG laptops they talked about in the previous page.

Yeah there is the boost, though it is not always active and depends much on the cpu and game playing. It usually comes in only when the cpu power is under a certain range, so all cpu-bound games doesn't take much advantage of it.
There are few articles and/or videos that explain this, like the recent one by Bob of all trades.

    do you think it's worth returning a 5900hx 3080 115+15w laptop to get a i9 10980hk 3080 150w one ?
