Can anyone tell me what Asus does with Refurbished laptops to ensure they work properly? I know some manufaceurs are much better about checking over laptops or computers when they are returned. I was considering buying an Asus Refurb through NewEgg and just wanted to know, before I bought one.

I'm not sure asus checks those PC's when they are refurbished..it seems like other people do it but I don't know for sure... It's usually the luck of the draw but I got an asus laptop refurbished from newegg about 5 months ago and it was hardcore damaged at the top of the screen and missing a few parts... I sent it back but newegg gave me a full refund for everything since I called about it and all. Other people say they are perfect condition.
As far as working properly I only see people saying that they work amazingly but like I said it all comes down to the scratches, etc. that you will find on the computer itself. -
ClearSkies Well no, I'm still here..
To my knowledge, Asus has never directly done refurbishment on their products. Refurbished units are processed by third party outfits, and then distributed to resellers as eligible under that moniker.
Quality of refurb likely depends on the who did the work (as I'm sure that some are better than others), and there is no way to obtain that information (or pick one refurb unit over another) as the resellers like NewEgg etc are unlikley to have that info either.
This is one area that Apple has outshined the entire industry in - their refurb units are done at factory level, and come with full (original length) 1 year warranties. -
They do carry out refurbishements themselves as this link here proves. What and how good a job they do I'm not sure of.

I'm not sure I stand corrected, yet. The link doesn't prove that Asus does the refurb work internally themselves, it simply details the warranty terms for their products that qualify to be labeled "Certified Refurbished" -- which can easily mean that Asus contracts with a third-party repair outfit and then guarantees their work for 3 months after new sale. Doesn't disprove it either, so one of us is undoubtedly correct
.
Asus North America's tech support department is quite small, and I know for a fact that they outsource a fair bit of their North America warranty work to ChemUSA (which is where my Eee went for warranty service in Fall '10).
Ken Lee @ GenTechPC needs to weigh in on this discussion - he has regular contact with the staff at Asus NA and probably knows the correct answer, either way. -
Good to know they provide a 3-month warranty. They still do not provide much info on how they Refurb components and computers.
I know Dell has a very good Refurbishing process. -
Nobody has more info about Asus Refurbished laptops? I am sure there are a lot of people who would be curios to know about this.

Asus doesn't disclose who does their refurb work, and resellers almost never release their purchase order sources so you would know where they got them from, but Asus offers a 90-day guarantee on any unit that completes the Asus NA-approved refub process ... what exactly more is there that anyone in the public arena has access to, that you're looking for?
And you got a Portege .....
