I've had an A8Jp for about a year and the hinge cracking problem has just surfaced. I sent an email to Asus support and they are going to send me information on sending it in for repair. Hopefully, everything will be under warranty.

    A few questions.
    1. Are they going to format my hard drive or replace it with a competely new PC? I'll back up my files to an external HDD, or I'll buy cloning software if necessary.
    2. My laptop came with two 512MB RAM sticks that I replaced with two 1GB RAM sticks. Do I have to put back the 512MB? I'm asking because I gave them away to a friend.
    3. Does anyone know the general turnaround time for warranty work?

Sorry if this is covered elsewhere, but I could not for the life of me find the "Search" function.

    1. I wouldn't take the risk, backup
    2. Put the older back so you are sure to not loose them.
    3. North America? 24 hour turnaround with overnight express shipping

Thanks for the response. I'm in North America (Connecticut, USA). They turnaround the warranty work that quickly? That's impressive.

I am a little disappointed that the hinge is cracking, because the A8Jp has been a stellar performing laptop.

I sent in my A8Ja in June 08 (a few days before my warranty expired)
They changed the chasis to a new one, but all other components were still the same. I changed my ram too, but I just left 1 slab of 512MB of ram in the notebook just in case, though I'm not sure if that was the original slab. I got mine back in 3 working days (apparently the shipment back to me screwed up)
