Asus Reputation for Quality?

Can anyone fill me in on the ASUS reputation for quality in the laptop product line? I am strongly considering an ASUS laptop, but have never seen one. I currently have an HP Pavilion dv1000 that I have been very happy with.

I have built a few desktop machines and used one or two ASUS motherboards and liked them, but know zero about their laptop reputation.

 

I am the most picky person you'd ever meet. I picked Asus. 'Nuff said. If you want a PC with training wheels buy a mac.

Also I think the look of ASUS laptops, especially the UL series and the g73 are way better than everything else out there...

The ASUS makes very nice and high quality products in general.
I am on the 3 notebook from ASUS.
I have to admit the first one F3jp was not that great a product, but that was around 5 years ago. Since then the ASUS quality has improved a lot.

My second machine M50Vm was great product and I love my current N71JQ.

Of course there could some be model where people are not satisfied, but that is not the general trend.

As far as I read the quality and service of ASUS is better than that of HP.

 

While ranked #1 in terms of having the lowest RMA rate in 2009, its quality varies from model to model, and the efficacy of its after sales service (and customer support) varies from country to country. If you can be more specific, as in which dimensions of quality you're concerned with, and in context of which models, I'm sure people, far more experienced than me, would gladly shed some light on it.

Regarding any target of my concern - partly it's just a general concern because I've not used an Asus.

More specifically I wonder about keyboard quality. I also am concerned with general durability because I need my next laptop to last 4 years or so and I carry it back and forth from office - to class - to home every day.

I will be using it in the USA.

 

Dont be mislead by the numerous Asus G73JH series RMA's. Generally Asus is good but something went wrong with the current G73's

 

The most neutral way of looking at it is the warranty they offer. In most cases you will get a 2 year warranty and 1 year accidental warranty.

Companies do not last by putting out a worse product and offering longer warranties than their competitors. Unless the product was grossly overpriced, but then who would buy it?

I have owned 3 notebooks in my lifetime, none being Asus. But I want to own an Asus Currently eyeing the N Series.

 

Even the G73 is pretty reliable. The guys who didn't have any GSOD/PSOD issues in the beginning are running 6+ months without a hitch. The stupid overheating issue is another story :-

 

its due to bad thermal paste application in Asus factory usually so really its not laptops fault but the fault of the people who assemble it.

 

I have owned two ASUS laptops so far (look at my sig.).

I used the Z70V for 3 years (Aug. 2005 - Aug. 2008) and sold it for $600 cash. I purchased the F8Va in Aug 2008 and so far I have never had any issues. I would say they are pretty reliable.

Asus quality is pretty good, if you do come across a problem, support tech and rma crew are efficient, they even offer free fedex shipping

 

I am on 2 months now with my G73 and have had zero hiccups. Granted, I'm running on stock drivers so no GSODs. But the word is Asus is already testing a fix for that.

 

I've used the following Asus notebooks: U3S, G2S, U6Ep, UL80VT and U30JC. The latter two have not had any issues and the first three were all repaired by Asus under the accidental damage warranty (blame the dog and butter fingers). In general, their U/UL line runs cool and works fine for day to day duties + minor gaming. The battery life is also a plus.

For warranties, make sure you send RMAs to the Fremont facility in California. My longest wait for a repair there (G2S LCD replacement) was 3 days. YMMV.

In terms of feel, I find the U/UL series keyboard to be average. It doesn't compare to a thinkpad's keyboard, but it's comfortable enough to use all day for work.

 

If the question is referring to build quality, then I have to say it various between each model. Like any consumer products manufacturer, all had produced good and bad products in the past. I've owned and handled dozens of Asus laptops to know that Asus isn't immune to this fact. Generally speaking and as of late, Asus laptops are probably better known for their budget gaming machines (G series), thin & lights (U/UL series) and their revolutionary netbooks. However, Asus is still a relatively new player in the OEM laptop market, so it still has lots of room to grow in terms of reputation and other qualities.

I won't start name dropping the specific problematic models Asus has had in the past, but if you're looking for durability as you mentioned earlier, I would suggest looking at Asus's B or P series given that these laptops are geared towards business users and tend to be built to a higher level of quality than most consumer systems. That said, Asus's main (and most profitable) target audience are still mainstream users. Their recent involvement in business machines does make you a bit like a guinea pig. The last business-class laptop Asus produced (V-series) had very mixed reviews, but I'm sure Asus has already ironed out the issues in order to prevent similar issues from occurring in their new B and P series.

I bought a factory refurbish and it's basically NEW. It came in a plain brown box, but I don't care. It's 99.9% out of a hundred. IT was missing a rubber bumper on the lid but i got that replaced. There is a couple very very very very very light scratches on the lid, but you can't see them because of the brushed aluminum pattern, you have to look super, super close. I wouldn't be surprised to see these on a genuine new laptop, just from sliding it into the bag, unless they come covered in that static cling scratch protector.

I wish it had a backlit keyboard but I think I can mod it with one.

 

Generally Asus is pretty good with build quality. My W7J is still like a tank and works well. My girlfriend likes her V2S.

I switched to a macbook earlier in the year as they have great build quality. I would have liked to get an Asus but they are hard to find and sometimes overpriced here in NZ.

 

I have had two problems with my U30Jc since I got it two months ago. However, it should be noted that Asus took care of them without question and both times had my unit back in my hands in a matter of days. I would still say that it is a well made product, I just had some weird issues- but their customer support (at least in Canada) has been amazing.
