Your audio driver software may have an equalizer that you can use to adjust the settings. If the volume is low and/or shoddy only when using the audio out jack, try reinstalling the software - and hope that the port isn't faulty.
I take it your headphones sound fine in other devices? -
I've adjusted the settings and it doesn't help much.
The headphones work fine in other devices. It just lacks bass.
I dont think the port is faulty.
Could be a case of upgrading the driver or sound card? -

I think that's exactly what i need!
Is that the best thing out there at the moment to boost my audio? -
Well, I had exactly the same problem with my Asus X5DIJ. The sound chip is not very good quality. It is acceptable with the in-built speakers (although not very loud and tend to distort at higher volumes) but it is quite poor with headphones. So here is what I did:
1) I bought Microsoft Lifechat LX-3000 headphones. This is connected via USB and not the mini jack, and the it has its own built-in audio card which is of quite good quality. So no matter how poor your laptop's audio chip as the headphones uses its own chipAnd I can tell you this headphones has mind blowing bass and volume. A must have. Plus, it has a very good quality microphone as well (uses the same USB cable, so no messing with microphone mini jack) witch is a nice plus if you use Skype etc. Here is one: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Microsoft-L...68984&sr=8-1&keywords=microsoft+lifechat+3000
2) To address the speaker problem I bought one of these Ricco USB speakers: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ricco-Alumi...=1365868724&sr=8-1&keywords=ricco+usb+speaker Be careful, as "USB speaker" most often means a pair of speakers that is powered from USB but still uses laptop's audio chip via an additional mini jack plug/cable. But this speaker, just like the headphones above, has its on audio chip, quite good quality, so once again it does not matter how poor the laptop's audio. And this speaker has one USB cable, for both power and audio, and it is very compact size, yet full stereo and amazingly much more louder than my laptop's built-in speakers. Quite worths the money. It becomes even louder if you connect it to your laptop via a mains amplified USB HUB, thanks to it's 2x5W real audio power (that is more than some of the micro hi-fi's performance...)
I hope this helps. -
Hi,
Thanks for your advice! I have opted for this usb device:

The digital-to-audio (DAC) converters are superb! The Xonar is a good alternative, but is rather inferior in audio reproduction. Good choice!
