My friend just bought this nice Asus S46 Ultrabook, which according to specs and stickers on the chassis has a GT740M graphics card. I cannot find any information at all on this card online, it's not even listed on the nvidia website.
Does anyone have an idea what this card is? There's other versions that come with a GT635M. By right, just judging from the name, it should be above the 730M which is a rebranded 640M. The only card to rebrand left above it would be the 650M. Considering the price of this laptop and slim design I find it somewhat unlikely to find a 650M inside. But on the other hand, it makes zero sense to have a 740M that would be slower than a 730M. Any insights?

Any guess should be as good as any other, most likely. But a 640m with different clock and ram timing? The kepler cards/gk107 chip cards are impressive when it comes to heat management. And it would make a lot of sense to put a 640m in the lower-end ultrabook-ish range in place of the old fermi cards/630m. Which are actually hotter, have no dynamic clocking, and draw more power overall as well as on peak loads.
An underclocked i7 (read: haswell) and a gk107 card - and the ultrabooks wouldn't actually run warm any more. They'd actually be living up to the hype at that point, some bunch of years later.. -
I was mostly surprised because of the price. It's a very well built notebook (I wouldnt really call it Ultrabook) with metal chassis, proper keyboard and touchpad, including SSD cache, and even though rather low-res 1366x768 screen, the brightness and viewing angles are decent. Then it's get a good i5 and a quite fast 3d card as well - all for 1000 SGD, which is ~800 USD. He wanted to run some games so we were looking at other options with a appropriate graphics card and those were much worse in terms of build quality and hardware. So far I can really recommend this notebook as an all-purpose well-built machine for a small budget

Well at that price a 386 shader part is excellent value.
