    Good afternoon folks,

Need your help with my strange problem, I have no idea what else I can do to fix it.

So, the laptop is showing a black screen when I turn it ON. The load indicator is flashing. I hear the beep sound when hold a 'shift' key, so I can assume it loads windows successfully.

The interesting part is when I turn it ON and close/open the lid very quickly - it displays the ASUS logo with a loading circle, after a while the screen is flashing (before accessing Windows 8) and then black screen again, just the back light works.

I can access BIOS, I flashed it already to the latest version - same problem.

I tried to load Ubuntu Live from USB stick - same problem again, it shows a black screen right before the Ubuntu logo should appear.

All this happened after I updated Avira Free Antivirus to the latest version (automatic update) and it asked me to restart the system.

I would appreciate any help and suggestions. Thanks.

The OS is probably bad, did you make a set of recovery discs when you got the machine?

That's weird. Do you have a GPU in that machine (I'm unfamiliar with it offhand)? What happens if you try to run an external monitor?
