I got my laptop with no OS on it and installed Windows XP and everything was fine.
I updated the BIOS to 2.05 from Intel's website using Afudos /i205.rom. This flash went successfully and I noticed it added a new option to the cpu (step up).
Anyway, It seems like ever since I updated the BIOS the 1394 Net Adapter in Device manager has a yellow (!) next to it (cannot start error code 10). I looked up the power state in the properties and it said its D5 (power turned off).
This is what I've tried so far:
1.Flashed the ROM to 1.07(what it came with) , 1.13. and it made no difference. the system information right now in BIOS says Intel S96S revision 2.05
2. Ive uinstalled/reinstalled the OHCI IEEE 1394 controller (which removed the 1394 adapter with it as well) and that didn't help either.
3. I formatted/reinstalled Windows XP at least 2-3 times with no luck. This includes SP1 and SP2 and all Windows updates.
Questions for your experts:
1. Is there a WRONG way to flash the bios? I did not use the Asus update utility because it was telling me to do it using DOS and I downloaded the DOS flasher from Intel directly.
2. Could a BIOS flash actually turn off the device internally? (Windows saying power state D5)
I know this isn't a big deal if you don't use Firewire but little things like that bug me. I've googled the entire planet looking for answers for this issue and nothing anyone has suggested has worked. What am I missing?![]()

nope, i remember one of the s96s user (tomgrm) recently posted a question about this . Check it out in the s96s owners lounge http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=138778&page=26

Have u tried any 1394 devices? -
I've read those posts already. no real fix. I just dont understand how it went from working to not working.

Like I said on the other thread & to the other poster with this issue, are you actually using firewire for anything? If not, you're just wasting time. I'm sure you have better things to do with it.

OK. It's your own time to put into it
Everybody expects all the features to function on the computer they paid top-dollar (or Euro) for. The question is: life is short, and you've already put a lot of time into working to make those money; is it worth putting a lot of extra time into tweaking something that you'll never use?
I don't deny I also lose a lot of time into tweaking things on my computer that I don't really need, because for me it's fun & relaxation. As long as it's the same for you I have nothing against it. Just make sure it doesn't become annoying, because then it's really not worth it. -
EBE,
in the registry go to HKEY local machine > system > current control set > Enum. Is there a V1394 folder there for you? If so, what sub folders or parameters are there underneath?
Reason I ask is because everywhere else that particuliar adapter is supposed to be listed under the PCI folder in the Enum section.
to comment on your last post: Yes it's worth it...it will be worth it when I finally figure this out. Gratification and newly acquired knowledge is always worth it. -
Yes I have the folder & the device configuration there. But keep in mind I am on a V6J.

I think I figured out what it's doing exactly. Windows XP is detecting the firewire on the motherboard as a IEEE host controller AND a 1394 net adapter. It's initializing the host controller which in turn prevents the 1394 adapter from initializing because both want the same resources. I may be wrong. When I remove the host controller the adapter goes with it. Only problem with a laptop is you can't remove PCI cards and put them back in in a different order or different slot. I wonder how you can get XP to shuffle and redetect.
