With the wireless on, how many hours can I get on the Asus S96J?

If I install the Os myself, would I have any problems? It's a savings of $100

Get the OS yourself if you can, it's not all that difficult if you are installing Windows.

The S96J will maybe get 2 hours on full brightness. It is the brightness setting that really limits battery life. If battery life is truly that important to you, you should consider the 9-cell battery or maybe even a smaller laptop.

yea.. with the brightnes to about 50-60%, the power4gear to battery savings, and wireless on, i get the most i've gotten is about 2:15-2:30. I've sworn i saw someone get about 3 hours on this thing, but i bet the brightness was set to like 20-30% =/.

and yea install the OS yourself.

The wireless card on will cost you about 20-30 minutes in battery life. With it off, and conservative settings and 50-60% brightness you should get at least 2.75 to 3 hours at first.

Of course batteries fade over time, so don't expect that 6 months and a year later.
