    Hi all,

Was wondering if any of the vendors can see if the SATA adaptor that comes with the z71v would possibly fit and be used in the V6V or the W3?

Also, if the x600 in the v6v and w3v are modular pci-e cards that can be upgraded in the future as with the modular Go 6600 that came with the z71v.

I understand that the z71v is the only one that is "meant" to be upgraded as I have been lurking around the ASUS forums for a good 2 1/2 weeks now. So please leave any comment about warranty issues out. I am just looking at how far I can upgrade my W3V (after, say, my warrany expires) period...possibilities listed below...

    -- 3GHz Pentium-M ?
    -- 2GB DDR2 PC4200 (533MHz) RAM
    -- 120GB 7200RPM SATA? If not... then P-ATA
    -- Next-gen modular pci-e video card? (Dreaming of course...but still a question)

I appreciate any professional feedback, and thank you.

On Z71V, the video card is removable. However, the design itself is proprietary so it's impossible to swap cards unless ASUS makes another card for the same machine.

The ideal platform from Intel is to have all manufacturers' comply to one same standard size of video card so all the cards can be swapped. However, that's not the case here at this generation of notebook (maybe by Q3 2005).

    Thanks for the reply guys,

I do understand that I could have gotten the xps2, but I might as well have an extra 4 pounds of accessories! The xps2 is a beast of a machine... but again was looking for portability... I appreciate the info though!

The Z71v comes with both a pATA and sATA adapter for the hard drive. Whether or not the W3 will come with one is not determined yet.. However, in theory as long as they make those components, it would work. The video card is proprietary in a way, but it is a form factor that Asus is going to continue to use. As long as they make another card for that form factor, it shouldn't be a problem either.

    Thanks,

    Thanks Justin,

If your theory is correct, which I'm sure is not that far off, is there an order than can be placed for a spare adaptor. Of course after you check if the adaptor works in your W3V first[ :D].

    Thanks,
    Gary

No... you might have missed the point. The motherboard on the Z71v has what I take it to be a high bandwidth adapter it which you can place pata or sata adapters onto.

If the W3 has a pata and it's not something that is swappable...... putting an sata adapter onto the pata connector isn't going to give you the performance you'd normally get out of the sata drive.

Like I said, IF it'll have the option for both, it would come with this optional adapter. It wasn't on the V6, so I'm not going to be surprised if I don't see it on the W3....... and this may have to do with their concern for what they are building out now.... I don't know. Maybe I missed something on the V6--- I'll check that out. But right now the position is... sata drives just weren't ready (for the most part) and intel wasn't going to hold up the new platform just for them..... so they had to make due with what they had......... we'll see what happens, I'll keep you updated.

    Thanks,
    Justin

    OK,

That cleared up a lot. Thought that they might have put a high bandwidth adapter in all of their Sanoma lappies. Oh well. Keeping my fingers crossed since they ARE shipping after the V6V and the Z71V. We'll see if it may carry over or not.

    Thanks,

Justin, do you think ASUS will ever sell these proprietary video cards separately so that one could upgrade if desired? Not talking about a particular model here, just in theory.
