Hi there. I have an Asus n550jk (although this may apply to all n series models) and I was surprised to find the lack of options available for customizing the touchpad.

There are no options to adjust on control panel and a limited number of presets to turn in or off in the ASUS Smart Gesture app.

When I look u der device manager I see that the touchpad is listed as ASUS Smart Touchpad (or something similar). O was expecting it to be synaptics or elantech. Does that mean that Asus makes there own touchpad? Or is it just labeled that way because of the driver being used for it.

I was wondering if there is any alternate drivers and control panels available for these trackpads that allow more gestures that are user customizable. Apparently some of the older laptops use elantech touchpads but I couldn't track down any reference to elantech on my machine.

Hi, Asus do not make their own touchpads as far as I know. They are using either Synaptics or Elan touchpads. You can find out for sure by uninstalling your touchpad drivers (have a copy ready to be install first!), then going to device manager and checking the touchpad device id. Windows 8 will load default drivers so you will have basic functionality of the touchpad while testing.

Website to confirm any device vendor:
    PCI Vendor and Device Lists

You want to be looking at ven (vendor) and dev (device) fields to confirm the manufacturer of the touchpad. Then you can load the drivers straight from Elan or Synaptics support pages. You might loose some specific Asus touchpad functionality, but should gain all the default touchpad manufacturer's functions.

If new drivers do not work as required or you do not like being without some Asus touchpad functionality new drivers can be uninstalled and old Asus drivers can be loaded back.

You can't configure the Touchpad in normal Mouse / System Settings of Windows. You have to use the Tool from Asus (Asus Smart Gesture) in the Statusbar of Windows beside the Clock. There you should have a grey Touchpad Symbol and on this you have to Double Click (no right Click and no single Click!) and there you get the things you want. If you don't have Asus Smart Gesture allready installed here you can download it directly from here: http://bit.ly/1Atg7pc

I believe the driver is provided by Synaptics. The controls are handled by the Asus Smart Gesture software, though, as A-S mentioned. That software you mentioned in the mouse properties/control panel are no longer there per Asus' software overriding it.

Its too bad you can't unlock any complex touchpad options by disabling the Asus controller.
