I got my G1 a few weeks back and now comes the time to throw away the box or store it somewhere.

I had the Toshiba "depot" warranty before and they would send me a box to send the computer in when I needed to ship it in for repair. I didn't need the original box for anything.

How does Asus tech support work if sending it in is necessary? Will I need to use the original box for anything or can it head safely to the recycling bin?

I haven't done it so I wouldn't know, but it may be a good idea to keep it for now.

Then again, that's me, my closet is full of boxes for stuff I bought, LCD monitor, speakers, keyboard, printer, HD enclosures...

I know if I need to move, it'll be a breeze with all the boxes :D

I would not imagine that you'd need the box for warranty work, but I would hang onto it. Selling it later will be easier with the box, and as cori said, moving is much easier with the original box (this is why I kept my LCD monitor box)

I know HP makes you send them back in the original box also, theres no harm in saving it.

When I had to get work on my G1 done I just brought it in to Asus with no box or anything. They asked for a service number of some kind that I had gotten from the over-the-phone tech support and they fixed my computer the next day at no cost to me.

For the reseller warranty (ie: within first 30 days), you should keep the box. More often than not, resellers can get a quick replacement from the distributors within the DOA period, but you must have the complete packaging.

If you plan on sending it to ASUS, ASUS will likely not need your original box. But you should keep it anyway since I'm not certain if they will ship you an empty box. Further, I have a V1 and it's a nice looking box to begin with. :) Anyway, they pay shipping for Ensemble units. If you want, they also have drop-in.

As far as Toshiba, they have always sent us empty boxes with "window frames" to ship back their in-warranty laptops and pay for both ways. In some cases, they might have you take it to a local shop, however.

That's also what I'm thinking. Most of the ENSEMBLE boxes are glossy picture boxes, which I find really nice looking :D

Definitely keep the box. its great if you need to ship it to them for repairs. It makes packing it much easier for RMAs.

I'd say keep it, just to be on the safe side. It's not like you've just bought a refrigerator... :p

I keep all of the important ones. That way if you have to send it back they can't say it was shipping damage and it was your fault. Plus, are you in that much need of space that you can't keep one box.

I kept my box, and sent it in for the first RMA. Then I got back a different type of box. :) But anyway, do keep the first box in case you need to RMA, the notebook fits very well in it.

For warranty purposes, you don't need it.

You don't need the original box, but trust me, I'd keep it if I were you. If you ever do need to ship it out, there is nothing that is going to be better than that original box. Also, keep the retail box that's inside the shipping box as well... Use it to store stuff in if you need to, but it's just a good idea. Otherwise you're going to need to find an appropriate sized box and make sure you secure it and pad it enough....

Thanks everyone for the replies. I have room to store stuff, so can keep the box.

We moved cross country and had to buy bunches of new stuff when we got here so we have boxes everywere. Just trying not to packrat and save things for years that I don't need. If I had saved the Toshiba box, it would have traveled all over California and then to Texas in 4 moves in the last 4 years. Since Toshiba sends you the perfect size box with packing materials included, I never thought about what other companies do.

If it's good to keep the box, then that's what I'll do.

I'm holding onto the box mine came in. When I put the A8JP and cooler on top of the shipping box on the coffee table, it's at the perfect height for working from the sofa! If it weren't for that very useful, if inelegant, feature, it would've been thrown out.
