I just checked out the Asus shop in Nova (Taipei) and found the U35/U45 on sale.

These have the exact same casing as the UL30/UL80, but the palm rest has been upgraded to metal (or at least has a metal layer on top). Both comes in black and my first impression is that the U30 is better built. The keyboard still flexes slightly on these.

    Specs:
    i5-430M
    2GB DDR3
    Nvidia 310m w/1GB
    500GB HDD
    DVD (U45 only)
    802.11n/Bluetooth
Comes with 6 or 8-cell battery

$1000 for the U45 and $950 for the U35 (-5% if you export it).

Weight should be the same as UL30/UL80.

So for those of you holding out for the UL30/80VT's successor and don't want to wait for the UL30/80JT (only difference being the i5-520UM, 640GB HDD on the UL30 and 500GB/7200rpm HDD on the UL80), the U35/45 should fit what you need, when it becomes available in your region.

PS: There isn't a single Asus model on display or in their system with an i7 UM CPU and the rep said he has never seen an UL30/80JT.

Last time I asked, Acer didn't sell those in Taiwan: they sell the "same" model... but with a slower CPU (i5 430) and GPU (an ATI 5470, I seem to remember... but I'm no longer sure).

So then, what are the main differences between the U35JC and the UL30JT? The specs & body appear to be very similar.

    The stronger CPU i guess.
Asus policy is very ty, i admit.

Only the Bamboo edition will have an USB 3.0 port whereas their new netbooks will get all kind of USB 3.0 ports, and whatever.

Looking at some press shots and some early discussion, it seems like the U35/U45 is slightly lighter due to construction and the wristrest design is a bit different. Besides that, it looks exactly the same. However, this is only early speculation, based on the little tidbits of info I found.

Basides the palmrest, I couldn't tell the difference between the U45 and UL80. I would assume the same for the U35 and UL30.

    U35 is basically the UL30JT with a non-UM CPU.

The Lenovo Y460 with an i5-520M and ATi 5650 is $999 with no coupon code.

Depending on materials and GFX card the U45 is not poorly priced in the market.

For some reason, Asus is pricing notebooks higher in TW than US. I paid a fairly large premium on my UL80VT compared to what Amazon was selling at back in October.

But the Y460 is also a heavy 14" model with heat problems, display problems and quite a few bad reviews.

Gentech PC has the u35JC listed for sale here

That's a pretty great starting price if you ask me! Although they mistakenly report that it has an optical drive and use a picture of the ul30vt :p

Credit goes to Quatro for the link.

I hope the U35JC isn't exactly like the UL30VT... I'm not a huge fan of the glossy palm rests.

The U35JC pictured here looks like it has matte palm rests.

    http://images.bit-tech.net/content_images/2010/05/hands-on-with-asus-latest-laptops/u35-2.jpg

Will the Silver U35JC sold on your site have matte palm rests as well?

Will GenTech PC have the Black U35JC available too?

I've looked U35JC and UL30JT pictures provided by Asus side by side and couldn't tell any differences, they just look exactly the same, unless Asus provide the wrong pictures (it happened before). According to Asus spec sheet the U35JC will be silver not black.

GenTech: I was merely going by the first paragraph under the picture, which has the "only one with optics" tagline. The detailed specs at the bottom state that there is no optical drive, but the first paragraph of the page says that there is :p.

Also, when you say that it looks exactly like the UL30VT and UL30JT...is that in terms of shape and size, or in terms of the casing as well? I remember the early hands on videos showed that the U35JC had this spiffy aluminum casing, and I believe that the UL30JT simply has faux-metal palmrests.

Any word on the U45JC's availability and pricing?

Here's a translated hands on review for all you other folks, which has some nice closeup shots of the finish. Some of the test results are baffling: a 3379 in 3dMark06...on the Intel HD GPU? I know that the Super Hybrid Engine/Optimus will muck up some test results since they operate dynamically, but I've never seen that before.

Hi Chanda Bear. FYI, GenTech have now removed the confusing opening paragraph about the optical drive (thank heavens!)

The photos (what few I've seen) of the U35JC seem to look like the upper side of the chassis around, above & below the keyboard are a patterned-printed plastic. I hope not. Yuck. I'd have thought they'd have stuck with the chassis design of the U30JC. But they didn't. The chassis design looks more like the UL30JT, except not black.

For the money, I still like the design & construction look of the U33JC plus the added improvements on components.

I'm not as impressed chassis-wise with the U35JC from the photos at GenTech or Xotic. When the U35JC, the UL30JT & the U33JC are released in the US, we'll at last know more. But I think we can confidently say that the early pics & brief article over at bit-tech.net were merely demo pre-release models and do not look like the actual models now being released. (Besides, what IS the "UL30" notebook he kept referring to and that looks like a clone on the outside of the U30JC?)

... oh, and on the topic of 3dMark06, since I oc'd the shaders on my 310M to 1720MHz (default is 1530MHz), I'm getting 3900+ on the test (I was getting 3700+ before). Nice. Stable too.

I rather like that patterned design, although I'm up for plain silver as long as it resists fingerprints and oils! The bamboo is nice and all, but I'm to much of a cheapskate for the U33JC and its siblings.

From what I hear, the U45JC will be around $870 or so if the price difference between it and the U35JC stays constant worldwide, so I will seriously reassess my need for an optical drive in the coming months. I hope the U35JC manages to stay cool and last for 6+ hours on a charge. I've almost convinced myself that getting a laptop with a real i3 rather than a CULV one would be preferable, especially since the U35JC and the UL30JT are the same price :D

I can see your point. $150 difference is a lot when standard notebooks are starting for around $500.

The pattern seemed odd to me probably because I was expecting an aluminum-type finish like the U30Jc. And, like in clothes, folks have different tastes.

Getting 6+ hrs on an i3-370M in the ASUS should be easy. My U30Jc gets that without difficulty, and it's an i3-350M (2.26GHz). Right now, I'm posting on this thread and reading reviews, as I've done over the last hour. I'm on "auto" on NV CP and "Battery Saving" scheme w/ 40-50% brightness. No video streaming. My battery shows "7 hr 20 min (83%) remaining".

I really want some reviews to start appearing soon...I absolutely cannot wait another week or two :p

Since I saw that both XoticPC and Gentech offer a cheap ($20) external dvd option, I've decided to give up on 14" laptops, since my only reason for buying one was for the optical drive. So unless the U30JC price drops to $800 or so, the U35JC is at the top of my list.

Also, it's too bad that half of that page is comprised of pictures that can't be translated. Oh well, I always liked looking at the pictures.

    Hi,

First post. I see that the user manual for the U35JC/45JC only lists USB 2.0 ports. The user manual for U33JC/43JC/55JC lists two USB 2.0 and one USB 3.0 "(on selected models)". Maybe something to be aware of when ordering! If information already well known, apologies.

    This is my dilemma
The specs on the U33JC are ideal for me... usb 3.0 (although just 1) and built in bluetooth. however, i don't like the bamboo

U35JC on the other hand is aesthetically pleasing but lacks the 2 features mentioned above... and a 0.3megapixal camera vs 2.0mb on the U33JC

anyone know if there is a U33JC non-bamboo version?

anyone notice that xopticpc carries the i3-350m on their u33jc and gentec carries i3-370m on theirs. i wonder if that is just a typo by one of them.

ON ASUS global website, U33JC offers i5 520M/450M/430M and i3 370M. So Xopticpc might have gotten wrong. But on other hand, Gentec has U30JC-B with i3 370M, which by the way, ASUS global website does NOT offer.

At same price, think one of them has a typo. If I have to guess, I think it's xopticpc that has a typo. It's two(asus, gentec) against one(xopticpc).

You really can't tell unless you contact manufacture themselves. ASUS website is not a good reference anyway. They don't mention i3 330UM on UL JTs either but that's only option we have right now. :(

By the way, can anyone conform if any of U series have ASUS Turbo33?

I'm actually very confused about all the models Asus presented lately.

So far I know that the UL30VT are the weakest with an SU7300 and G210 and has no optical drive.
Now there's a UL30JT, which offers a new undervolted i3/i5, having similar weight and size while adding brushed aluminium palmrests. Still no optical drive
Besides there's the U30JC, which is much more heavy and bulky but comes with an full i5 cpu. Has an optical drive.
And now, this U35JC is basically the same like the U30JC but just no optical drive so it's lighter and more slim? Is it as slim&light as the ul30vt?

The U33 doesn't interest me at all, since this bamboo look is not my style...

    1. The U30JC is sold in the US with an i3-350M.
    2. Yes, the U35JC is as practically the same as the U30JC without an optical drive. It should be around the same size as the UL30VT and UL30JT, but get battery life somewhere in between that of UL30JT and U30JC, probably closer to UL30JT and UL30VT

Anyone know on build quality of U35?
Its shown aluminum brushed, but is it majority aluminum or majority plastic?
Leaning towards this over U33 if its solid aluminum much prefered over plastic.

I think the U35JC is plastic with engravings. It doesn't look aluminum to me. The UL30JT looks like brush aluminum. However, we won't know for sure until the models are released

UL30VT/JC and U35JC all share the same chassis. U35JC has either a matte plastic palm rest or a metal one. U30JC is a completely different chassis and in my opinion, a much better one.

Well, I was going to write exactly what eugenes wrote (great minds, etc) ... except that he already wrote it!

To me the U35JC is the younger brother of the UL30VT/JT (except with a full-speed processor), NOT the U30JC.

In several ways, the U30JC is unique. It seems like ASUS will not be reusing that chassis idea. The U33JC & it's bamboo/aluminum siblings are also unique.

To me, the way the printing goes over the U35JC's upper body, even where it dips & curves makes it look much more like plastic than brushed aluminum. Perhaps that design isn't printed on ... but it certainly LOOKS printed on to me.

The U30JC's palm rest & trackpad and the U33JC's entire upper surface, except for the bamboo palm rest, really look like brushed aluminum ... because they are!

Only if you spray-paint it.

BTW, sorry if someone has already linked to this Taiwanese (I think) page.

Here are some very nice close-up photos of the U35JC.

And if you want to link to it using Google Translate, though I usually find that the photo links work better in the original, untranslated page!

Hey guys. I've finally found a hands on review of the U35JC. It's from Poland, but after it's been put through google translate its pretty well legible. Some good photos on there too. Just a shame we're not gonna be getting the black version in the UK and the USA: Review of UL35JC

    Enjoy!
