Does J&R have a separate Canada website store?

Is this true?! What about duty and other stuff.. I'm afraid of ordering from U.S. online stores like Gentech because of those additional fees aside from S&H -
Link to the claim above is here: U35JC-A1 ASUS U35JC-A1 Notebook PC - Core i3 i3-370M 2.40 GHz - 13.3`` - Silver 4 GB DDR3 SDRAM - 500 GB HDD - Wi-Fi, Gigabit Ethernet - Windows 7 Home Premium x64 - Cendirect Canada -
About the transition from i3 to i5, it depends. From i3-370M to i5-450M, you will get a 10% performance boost, but the transition from the i3-370M to the i5-430M or -520M is less than 8%.
Besides, i5 on average will draw more power than i3 (Reasons: Higher clock speeds and Turbo Boost). -
Thanks for the info. about the processor, I guess I don't really need the i5 cores then, if it's not too big of a difference, I'm not a heavy duty user anyway~ -
As for i3 vs i5...I think I'm going to go with the i3. The computer ships with i3 so the computer was clearly designed for that processor. If they swap out the processor for an i5, the configurer will have to requalify the system and chances are they won't be as thorough as the original manufacturer so design problems are more likely to pop up. At least that is how I see it, but time may prove me wrong! -
According to that the i3-370M is actually slightly better than the i5-430M. -
I based the percentages on Passmark (CPUMark) from Passmark.com. -
Very cool info. everyone, thanks a lot! I guess I'll just go with the original specs then, no upgrades.. So the question now narrows down to which store do I order from. I too emailed Cendirect about the availability, hope to hear from them SOON. I cannot wait for a new laptop, which I've been searching for a perfect fit for me since beginning of the summer
-
The status on Amazon is now:
"Usually ships within 1 to 4 weeks.
Ships from and sold by Amazon.com."
$829
No taxes or shipping (Amazon Prime) for me.
On the fence about pulling the trigger. -
on Amazon.ca:
Usually ships within 1 to 2 months.
Ships from and sold by Amazon.ca. Gift-wrap available.
It's #2 in notebook sales! xD -
1) You may have customs on import. Hopefully not.
2) Even w/o customs, getting it over the border may take even longer than waiting and getting it here. Possibly weeks given our tightened security laws now in the US.
3) What if there is a problem with the unit? It won't be easy to return it and you'll have to do everything through ASUS, and so far, their repair speed has NOT been very fast. (Good warranties, but slow at getting stuff done.)
Just my opinion.
Oh, and if you want to avoid the German on the Notebookcheck site, it's Notebookcheck.NET, not .COM. Here:

I have a question to anyone who pre-ordered from JR.com
Does your order say backordered? I hope this is just because it hasn't shipped yet and not that I wasn't one of the first set of pre-orders and I won't get it until a couple weeks after. -
I made a detailed post about customs and that stuff a few pages back...but there should be no duty on a new laptop if you buy from the US and are in Canada. There is some technological loop in the duty rules that should make it except from duty.
However, you absolutely do have to pay all applicable taxes regardless of who you pick as the shipper. And if you pick UPS Ground without brokerage, you'll want to cry when you see the brokerage bill.
Call customs if you want to confirm...I have no idea how it works if you're American and want to buy from Canada.
A few retailers have the U45JC on sale, but can't see anyone with the U35JC yet. And only amazon + one other retailer has the U30JC-B1 so far. Though some of these places are on the west coast so it's still early and I'm assuming they get the shipment mid-day so hopefully we'll see some updates soon. -
I have a question. What would happen if I bought it from J&R then sent it to a relative in the states. They in turn ship it to me. Would I still have to pay tax? -
you only pay tax if your relatives are in NY i believe... idk about customs
-
UPDATE: ExcaliberPC.com gives the U35Jc an ETA of 16/08/2010 here. -
ship to CA then, as long as it doesnt ship to NY you are fine, they only collect tax there because they only have the store in NY... not sure if custom will charge you when you try to ship it back to canada tho
-
Are there any places except for xoticpc and genech that allow you to customize the laptop? I like everything standard, but i want a 7200 RPM drive instead...
-
I am living in Thailand, so I bought it here in Bangkok at a local IT center. -
For Canadians looking at Cendirect:
I just got a response from them. They are receiving the next shipment of U35JCs on the 20th of August. After reading this, I am reconsidering purchasing from them...
Has anyone had experience with Cendirect? I'd hate to order this computer and have it show up with a French keyboard. Then have to pay to send it back. I don't trust these sales guys either; from these reviews, it sounds like the sales staff will say anything to get you to buy from them. Any thoughts?
EDIT:
Canadians, fill this out if you want to see the U35JC at Canada Computers: http://www.canadacomputers.com/prodrequest.php -
EXCaliberPC's website also confirms the 20th of August ETA - looks like were looking at a simultaneous availability in both the states and Canada. I too read the same article about Cendirect yesterday, but you also have to note that the French keyboard they got was from a Canada-specific model, and as the U35/U45 don't have any Canadian-specific models (that I know of) I think it'll have a standard US keyboard. If I were you I'd just order from Directdial.com - an extra $30 for peace of mind. -
NKash, if you get the laptop from a relative in the States you will still have to pay GST + the applicable provincial tax based on the value that your relatives declare for the product when they mail it to you (they have to fill out a customs declaration).
I'm not encouraging any type of illegal behavior, but the value that your relatives declare is something they write in themselves. In other words, you can probably have them declare whatever the absolute lowest price you can find is for the laptop. I would highly suggest not to go under this price though, because customs can and likely will open the package to check the contents. If the declared value is $400 and there is a U35JC in there, it won't fly. Customs is most definitely not stupid. If you have them declare the lowest reasonable value make sure that they don't include an invoice or receipt in there for you otherwise customs will reassess the package based on the invoice/receipt cost (assuming they open the package).
Now, if you have relatives there, your best bet is to ask them to use USPS to ship you the item. USPS will be delivered to you via Canada Post and all you'll pay is taxes and a $5 handling fee. Once again though, I urge you to make sure that new laptops have a loophole in the agreement and are not subject to duty. You can do that by calling customs. I would also be inclined to say that it won't cost your relatives anything close to $100 to ship it to you, even if they use priority mail.
Anyways hope that helps.
I definitely wouldn't buy from Cendirect after reading their reviews, however several places will price match them if the product is in stock. Rather than buying from Cendirect, I would suggest to people to find a local store that you can walk into and price match the item. I know Memory Express in Alberta will do it, but only if the competitor has the item in stock. -
Update from Cendirect:
Hello again David,
If this is the model that you have decided to purchase, placing an order is recommended. There are 3 units on order scheduled to arrive on August 30th, one is already spoken for. All you do by placing an order is reserve your place in line against incoming stock. Only once we ship the item do we bill your credit card.
Hope this answers your questions
------------------------------------------------
August 30th..that's pretty late for me.
Yes I filled out that request form for Canada Computers, if they can have U35jc SOON I would be really happy. -
August 30th? The states are still getting it on the 23rd-25th right?
My order on JR.com currently states that it is on backorder. I hope that just means they haven't received the stock yet and not that I missed out on getting the first group of them. -
-
Is that what their website says or did you speak with someone?
I just e-mailed J&R and got a quick response about my inquiry. They confirmed my original thought that the item was listed on backorder because they have yet to receive shipment. They also reassured me that mine will be shipped from the first shipment they receive.
I REALLLY hope they get it before the 23rd-25th. That would be great. What has me doubtful is the fact that J&R has no ETA. -
Gentech says on the U35Jc ETA:
- Still says August 23rd, I hope they update it again next week, I'll let you know Monday.

Does someone have proof of the U35JC weight?
-
Breaking News: Asus has updated the ASUSU35JC to an astounding 1.9kg or 4.1888 lbs!!. This is 0.5lbs heavier than expected, and enough to detract me from making any sort of ASUSU35JC purchase! this is by far heart breaking and would lead me astray into the r705 world
-
-
Also not a deal breaker. 4.19lb is lighter than some of my textbooks and even much lighter than the macbook at 4.7lb as a 13 in comparison.
4.19lb is the same weight as the UL30JT (also listed at 1.9kg) and i assume perhaps a tiny bit heavier than the UL30VT, but hardly a reason for concern since I never heard of anyone complaining about the UL30VT's weight before. -
-
4.19lbs is terrible news. The U45JC is only .2lbs more and includes an optical drive and is 14" >_< The UL30VT was 3.7lbs, right?.
I thought someone weighed it at just under 4lbs? This is somewhat disappointing and I am almost considering the U45JC or even possibly the UL30VT >_< -
Still, you can't help but be dissapointed that its not the advertised 3.7lbs, and im almost offended asus dares to release weight numbers without considering consumers feelings. I think its wrong. I dont see the upgrade over the U30JC. If its only 0.6 lbs lighter and lesser graphics...where is the big promise being delivered? Portability is huge in my opinion, and I don't see the upgrade being made over the U30JC, and i even suspect the quality build is not as good as the U30JC.
-
The Ul30Vt is indeed 3.7lbs.
-
Was the guy lying who weighed his U35JC in @ 3.99lbs or using an inaccurate scale? We had a guy in here who had a U35JC from another country who got that weight.

Hi,
I saw that I will be able to order the Asus U35JC-A1 4 August 2010. I want to know how many will you receive because I need to buy a couple. I also want to know if I can get it before 23 August 2010 if I'm ordering it by my Staples store
Thanks for helping me with that !

I'm on Relentless's side. If the U35Jc is indeed 4.2lbs, than use the money you would normally use with an extra $20 or so and you can get the U45Jc! This could make me forget about ordering the U35Jc entirely.
-
I was expecting just barely under 4 pounds so 4.0 to 4.2 is not a HUGE deal, but it is still disappointing they couldn't get the aforementioned 3.7 pounds
.
-
I received a shipping notice for the U45JC I ordered from Xotic. Finally!
-
I've held my tongue but now must speak.
I too was almost ready to buy the ASUS U35jc (from GentechPC, of course) until its weight was confirmed to be 4.19 lbs.
At 3.75 lbs and with a dedicated graphics card and Optimus, the U35jc was the laptop to get. Now that it's over 4 lbs, I'm not so sure.
Toshiba has 2 models (700, 705) that are both under 3.3 lbs and that includes an internal optical drive. However, they don't have a dedicated graphics card.
As someone else already mentioned, ASUS offers the U45jc, which includes an optical drive and has a 14" screen, and is only half a pound heavier than the U35jc.
I suppose we shouldn't be too surprised at the weight. After all, the ASUS U30jc is listed at 4.8 lbs and is almost identical to the U35jc, except that it has an internal optical drive. Are we to believe that an internal optical drive weighs 1 lb? I think not. So if we take the U30jc's weight of 4.8 lbs as the correct one between these 2 laptops, then the U35jc's weight of 4.2 lbs seems correct. Whereas it's former reported weight of 3.7 lbs seems more like wishful thinking.
Very disappointing indeed. -
I will likely still get the U35JC, but the UL30VT-A1 is slightly in the back of my mind.
Are you going with something else bankergolfer? -
The U45JC is 0.44lb heavier than the U35JC based on the weight stated on the Asus global webpage (2.1kg vs 1.9kg)
Even with the additional weight, the U35JC is still slimmer than the U45JC (1.48 cm vs 1.65 cm at the smallest point)
Seriously .5 lbs (3.7 vs 4.2) is enough to make people give up this laptop and opt for its ~70$ more expensive cousin the U45JC? Granted if you want the bigger screen and optical drive that is a fine reason, but just for the weight i think its silly. If you thought 3.7 lb was lightweight before I doubt .5 lbs will suddenly make the laptop that much heavier or that much less portable.
Certainly if weight was a concern, why even opt for the HEAVIER U45JC -__-. The toshiba R700 is a good choice, but you give up discrete graphics.
For myself, personally, I doubt I will notice much of the difference, i mean .5 lbs thats less than the weight of a laptop sleeve.
