I have been hearing the high pitched noise lately too. I guess I didn't really hear it much because I wasn't in VERY quiet locations. The sound is intermittent and if it was constant it would be a huge annoyance. Its hard to determine why its so annoying. Its much quieter than hearing a fan at full speed, but it is annoying because of how high pitched it is. I don't want to sacrifice half my battery life to get rid of the noise though.
I will have to accept it. Its the only real negative I have found with this laptop so far.
-
-
Relentless... I agree with you. I do get the sound... it is very intermittent, and 'variable' (comes and goes) when I do get it. That being said, even WITH the sound, I am really happy with this notebook to date. I think the build quality is amazing given the size-to-weight ratio, and the power vs battery life is also amazing. Would LOVE for ASUS to solve the sound.. but am very happy I got the laptop regardless...
-
This is way the MIC/Speakers consumes some battery:
"What happens if I have the "Listen to this device" option checked in the microphone (which causes an echo of the mic input to be sent to the sound output) is that it causes an infinite feedback loop, the mic sending sound to the sound card, and the sound card multiplying it and sending it back to the mic, which then sends it back to the sound card.
" -
Totally agree with both of you. Awesome laptop, even with the sound.
-
Well, then
here it is!
it fluctuates between 6 and 10 but mostly 10
Bettery safe mode
Wifi off
Audio off
SHE enable
Nothing running but batteryMon
screen brightness 20%
-
i also notice that opening chrome or the magnifying glass increases the high pitch noise. Give it a try
-
or moving your mouse

Is anyone having trouble getting their GPUs to turn on? I'm getting about 15 FPS in Left4Dead at 640x480 resolution and all settings down. When I uninstalled the nVidia driver, I get the same fps using the Intel HD GPU.
I tried setting it to where it turns on when I run the Left4Dead application, but it still doesn't turn on. -
Do you have the latest nvidia drivers installed?
-
I installed the latest graphics driver but my computer kept locking up. I also tried to install the latest Optimus specific driver, but during the installation it said my computer doesn't have the correct hardware.
When I tried to install this optimus driver in safe mode, my computer froze and I had to force restart, thus making my OS corrupt.
I just now upgraded to BIOS 208 from 207 and now my computer won't turn on. I need to figure out how to clear the CMOS.
Lol, I've been having a hard time with this laptop from the beginning; the high pitched beeping noise due to CPU idling doesn't help much either.
Edit: Does anyone know how to reset the BIOS on a laptop? I've never done it on a laptop before. There's no mention of it in the included manual or on their website. -
Did you try booting in System restore??
I think its F9 but sure
and yeah you need to Bios 208 and you probably didnt it let it update or dont have a bios at all could be
but after the update to 208
Nvidia latest drivers should work
and yeah the Optimus driver doesnt work on hours -
I can't do system restore because when I press the power button, nothing happens.
-
if you take your HDD out and then power it on it should work
-
No luck with removing the hard drive.
-
i think you could have bricked your notebook...
-
And there you go. It is possible, and your notebook's battery and charge rate are normal. Adding in wifi to that mix won't actually affect your battery hours a huge amount. Going to sites that use the IGP or GPU more will affect battery life.
And your BattMon reading is at 96% so at 100%, you'd have even more.
So you should be able to use wifi and some browsing and still keep it within 8 hrs which is great for a school laptop! -
did you use winflash or easyflash or whatever its called?
-
And for those with the whine, like my Palm PDA, the type of LCD panel used & its refresh rate can also be a source of a high-pitched noise. I've no idea what is causing it for all of you.
Also, be assured that if it is indeed high-pitched, it means that not everyone can hear it and distance of proximity can affect hearing it so others next to you or at the desk or table next to you may not be able to hear it. Ask them ... from where they're sitting. You may be unnecessarily embarrassed or worried about bugging others. -
Clear the BIOS? You have to be able to start the notebook first and get into the BIOS and have it reset itself to factory setting (factory BIOS version). But you can't "clear" it (I don't think), and if it doesn't respond to pressing the power button, then you have indeed "bricked" or killed your notebook (really just the BIOS chip, but it is the starting point of everything on your motherboard.)
You'll need to phone ASUS or the retailer you bought it from and explain your problem. They should give you an RMA #. If you're in the US, then you also qualify for a one-time accidental damage (or user-caused) return on your laptop.
So sorry to hear this bad news.
On your next one, be sure & use the WinFlash utility (not BIOS' EasyFlash) and follow the steps laid out in this thread to avoid bricking it.
Any way we can help, just let us know. -
I got my U35JC yesterday.. thankfully the high-pitched noise is hardly audible (and what i can hear is not really that high-pitched..)
what i don't like about this laptop is
1) the screen has a pretty bad vertical viewing angle.. even a change of few degrees to the angle of the screen (or your head) makes a difference
2) the touchpad is so jittery, it's like the cursor is jumping around by itself.. has anyone tried other drivers than the ELAN ones? the options don't allow you to adjust the touchpad sensitivity (the multitouch is pretty bad too)
the rest i like.. -
yeah I admit the high pitch sound isnt THAT bad but if youre alone in a quiet room with no music because apperantly music card is causing a large drainage of power then its pretty loud
also, I agree with you, the viewing angles are terrible but its not a con for me because I did some research on the laptop and the few reviews I read notice this issue, but none of them had issues with the battery or high pitch sound
the only con I see is the screen, it just seems really cheap, like I can just bend it -
Do I have to pay for BatteryMon, or is there someplace I can dl it for free?
-
you mean batterybar? google battery bar. there is a free version and a pay version. takes a few days for its accuracy to go up but once it learns its fairly accurate.
-
BatteryMon - You can google the name and download it. It's a 30days trial.
-
Anyone know how to add additional increments to the Fn volume control (or better yet, make it logarithmic)? By default it jumps all the way from 0 to 11%!
If I'm playing a game or watching porno late at night and want things quiet, I've got to alt-tab out of whatever I'm doing and adjust the volume from the task bar. As a result, my mouse buttons are getting sticky and I think other users are getting suspicious of this.
Please help! -
Ive had this laptop for a few days...it's nice but the small things really bug me.
I think I might just return it and get a macbook pro...
It's $500 more but i'm sure it'll last me a long time. -
I went ahead and RMAed my U35JC. Let's see how long it takes to get it back. Thanks for the responses.
-
arghhhhhh -
Can anyone help me with this issue? Sometimes NOT always videos are unwatchable, what can I do to get rid of this 'effect'?
-
You probably need to download a codec. Try installing a full codec pack from this site: Free-Codecs.com : Download K-Lite Codec Pack 6.4.0 FULL, K-Lite Codec Pack 6.4.0 STANDARD, K-Lite Codec Pack 6.4.0 BASIC : K-Lite Codec Pack is a collection of codecs and related tools
-
I'll try that but I highly doubt it. It is the same for even standard youtube flash videos. Like I said it'll show perfectly clear sometimes(exact same video is working now), other times it'll show distortion as shown above. Could it possibly be a Nvidia driver issue?
-
Do you have Bios 208 along with Nvidias latest beta driver? Could be that!
Also, dont use that
use this
CCCP - Combined Community Codec Pack
the ONLY codec and video player you will EVER need
try watching videos with that
and thats youtube different than that video not the same thing -
Concur on the screen... but I only use the laptop for myself and to some degree see it as a 'positive' thing for airline travel and airports (keeps onlookers 'out')... Try different settings on the touchpad... version 12 (last two digits) fixed mine from 'jittery' to rock-solid. I have also tried version 13 (from the Drivers section) and it seems to work just as well.
-
Hmmm... I actually think the screen is much better, more rigid than any other thin & light 13"... tried others and they all felt cheap/flimsy... I think this one feels great!
-
Really? ah okay, well, again, this is my first notebook, so I dont know much
the screen is REALLY thing which I think its cool -
I have a quesiton about laptop batteries.
Is it ok to use it plugged in a lot while I am at home if need be? Will it affect the lifespan of the battery? I want my battery to last as long as possible. It is preferable to be unplugged all the time, but I don't want to recharge my battery EVERY single day. It seems like I would need a new one in no time.
How many full charges does a battery get? I heard only around 300 which seems kind of low since I would only get 1 year out of the battery before I needed a new one.
Should I ever use the laptop plugged in with NO battery? -
Li-ion batteries, or so I've read, get about 1000 charges on a quality charger. But a li-ion battery starts to decay and lose capacity from the moment you first charge it. Most laptop batteries will give you 2.5-3 yrs before they start to really lose power. Usually by 3 years, no matter what you do, the power will begin to really erode. I usually wait until it is down to 30-45 min before I buy a new one. That was with a new battery in my Dell that gave me 3 hrs on a charge (!) so I've no idea what will happen on an 8-hr battery.
To me, the best is to stop worrying and just use the notebook normally. In about 3 yrs, you'll need to buy another battery or use it plugged in most of the time. -
Got my U35JC today! Love it, works great!
With 256ssd and 8gb ram it flies and still runs cool and quiet.
So far it looks like a keeper!
More detailed review to follow, feel free to ask any questions.
I ordered CTO from GenTec, great service, fast delivery.
Liking it more than a Sony Z I tried. -
I am really pleased with my new U45JC.
Yesterday, I got 7 hrs of use with 10% left on my battery. All with wifi on, SHE on, company VPN on (while working on the company software), Microsoft Office 2010 (word and excel), webmail, light web browsing, and down loaded Urban Terror (708MB file size). I also played for about 10 min (short time... because, I was at work.) .... btw, the game plays great.
The screen is better than I though. The weight is good for 14.1" inch screen. The only upgrade I did was the wifi card to an Intel 6200 -
...and my better half thinks that the keyboard and web cam sucks...compare to our DELL XPS M1710 which has a better screen for games
-
It's a nice ultra portable.
The Asus U35JC would go against what notebooks do you think?
- Sony Z
- Lenovo x2/301
- Dell e4310
- MacBook Pro 13"
- MacBook Air
Did I miss any?
Forgetting about the price which one do you think is the best?
What the biggest competitor to the UL35JC? The Sony Z?? -
Thanks I'll download that! I only installed the one on the Asus Drivers disc which for me is 189.64. How would I go about downloading new drivers for the video card?
EDIT: As I downloaded that and about to install it it told me my DirectX was outdated or something, could that have been the problem?
Also due battery readings for you guys using the default windows one or batterybar wildly in-cohesive? Sometimes Id get 9 hours estimated for one and the other would be pegged at four and vice versa as well. Sometimes it would change from 9 to 4 in a matter minutes without running any additional programs/causing additional strain on the CPU. -
For the latest ASUS BIOS and other drivers & utilities for your U35Jc, go HERE.
Search for your model (U35Jc or U45Jc?) in the upper-left search box.
For the latest drivers for your nVidia 310M GPU, go HERE. You'll need to be sure you have flashed to the latest 208 BIOS before you try to install the latest nVidia driver.
Use the ASUS WinFlash utility to flash the BIOS. It's already installed on your computer unless you uninstalled it.
When flashing your BIOS, be sure to:
- download the 208 BIOS file to an easy-to-find location
- put your notebook in High Performance so it won't shut down
- turn off any screen saver
- turn off your wifi
- turn off your antivirus
- leave your notebook plugged in
- unplug all external devices (no USB stuff, no sound, no monitor, no external mouse, etc)
- no other programs running (some people boot up into safe mode to be safe. I never have.)
- open WinFlash.
- It will ask where the BIOS upgrade flash is. Point it to the file and click okay.
- Then wait while it flashes your BIOS. It'll take about 30 sec.
- Do not shut off your notebook for any reason during this time.
- When it is done, reboot and press F2 to get into the BIOS. Select default settings, save & exit
That's it. -
Don't forget the Acer 3820T and 3820TG.
The TG has the i5 with switchable ATI Radeon 5650.. but it isn't available in North America. The T is but doesn't have the dedicated GPU, comes with i3 350 but still can swap in an i5 520 or 540. About $680 (T) or $950 (TG).
I'm now heavily considering the T over the u35jc because of the whine sound and that I really don't need a separate GPU in a 13". Hate to admit it but if I had to make a decision today, I'd go for the Acer. I'd rather put the extra $$ into RAM and a Momentus XT. The silver Asus is soo nice looking though.. -
May I remind Acer is one of THE worse pc makers?
Ive had 3 Acer Pcs and they dont last long -
Dont forget price/performance
-
I don't quite buy that 100%. Yeah, Acer is no Vaio Z or Macbook but Asus is not leaps and bounds ahead, if at all. Also keep in mind that these are half the price of the Apple and Sony models. Asus is no Steve Jobs either, rushing to find a solution to a product problem a large amount of customers are experiencing and upset with. The whine thread on the AsusTek forums dates back to February of this year, has 25 pages, over 26,000 views and not a peep from Asus.
I've read a lot of the 500 page 3820TG thread and there is nothing to discourage anyone from considering it (both the T and TG model) when looking at anything Asus has to offer. It has its flaws, but every computer does. I've read some bad things about Acer as a whole, but I've read a lot of good stuff too so ultimately, it's up to the buyer.
What happened to your 3 Acers? Were they desktops or notebooks?
I've acutally always thought Gateway and/or Compaq was the worst one can do.
-
And actually to clarify, there's nothing about build quality or failure rate in that thread that discredits the Acer. The TG isn't availablie in North America and Acer has no plans for it to show up so sourcing one from Taiwan or Germany (which is actually quite easy and many users have sucessfully done it) could be a turn off.
The T is has the integrated graphics which is as good as some people need. If so, also check out the Asus U35f-X1 for $740 (up from around $680 a month ago!
) from Amazon. I don't know if this has the whine sound too, no one one on the forums here seems to have one.
-
Going by the one of the users review he said
"The hard drive makes little noises that sounds like bees buzzing. I looked it up and it seems this is normal."
Seems like it does but like most people they mistake it as the HD whilst its something else. -
that's for horizontal angle.. the vertical angle is the main problem
i have the .12 drivers installed, the situation was improved compared to .9 but the cursor still seems to be jumping at random points
the drivers section at support.asus.com only has the .12 and .9 versions, where did you find the .13?
thanks
