yes on the wireless card, but it's really hard to change. the cpu is soldered in, so you can't really change it. there has backlit keyboard mods for the ul30, but i'm not sure if their keyboards are interchangeable. never considered changing the lcd...i guess it's possible since you can usually replace lcds back in the day.

Am I the only one that watches netflix? This is the only time that I ever get the bluescreen. Everything else seems to be working fine. I did try to uninstall silverlight and then re-install it, but that didn't work. Any clues as to what the could be causing the problem?

Yeah...loving the price drop. Waiting for J&R's site to update with the new price hopefully, so I can tap in on some more cash back. I finally think my new laptop purchase is near after 6 years on my Dell Inspiron 6000D.

Is that possible? In the specs in Holland (and in Germany) there is a maximum of 4GB. This also is the case for the U30/33 series.

That's why I am hesitating to buy a U35 (or U30). I really like the possibility to upgrade in the future. The K42 and N82 series don't seem to have this "problem" but those laptop aren't available in the Netherlands.

I believe you can upgrade this to 8gb. I believe someone on here has already done so. Also according to Intel's specs sheet...the 370m is capable of 8gb. I think asus is just being careful about overestimating the max ram...maybe because if you use a 32 bit os, you're capped at 4gb. But maybe someone can chime in to provide a more solid answer.

update: it was uniquestco who did the upgrade. and he's loving it. he stated this earlier in the thread, "With 256ssd and 8gb ram it flies and still runs cool and quiet."

The U35Jc will take 8GB. The specs are for what ASUS has actually tested in it and so rate it, but it will definitely take 8GB. I think someone on this thread recently upgraded to 8GB.

Sites like GenTechPC offer 8GB as an upgrade for the U35Jc

The European version would not be different in that.

I am guessing it already arrive so to save you the hassle of reading the whole thread. Here are something suggestion to to do.

    1. Upgrade the Bios using Asus flash utility: Bios 208 or above
    2. Install Nvidias latest drivers ,official is the 259, but I am using the 260 and it works fine. The nvidia driver that is loaded in your baby does not support Nvidia Optimus which will grant you the 8 hours of battery life.
    3. If would be best if you did a Clean install as this model is LOADED with bloaware and crap you dont really need, if you do decide to do a fresh install, do make sure to install EVERYTHING from the asus support page
    4. You might experience the dreadful high pitch whine sound we have all been experiencing since we've gotten ours. We think its normal. Asus has not done anything to correct his issue on previous models with the same issue.
    5. Once you have installed everything and are ready to go, plug your laptop and do a Windows Experience with SHE off and on High Performance mode.
    6. download Batterymon charge your notebook full and run a test .
    Wifi off
    Volume off
    Power4gear on Battery save mode
    No programs running but Batterymon.
Tell us your discharge rate and time remaining.

What Nvidia drivers are you using?

Have you update the bios to 208?

it seems to be a Nvidia issue that is causing the program or Intel

Update bios to 208 and above

and install the nvidia driver from their site

look for the beta version of 260

Has anyone else ended up with the u35jc in black aluminium? How hard is it to keep clean????? Mine already looks a couple of years old. Constantly, constantly buffing it to get fingerprints and oily smudges out. Performing admirably though. Got the zeroshock case I read about on this forum and its a nice bit of kit, reassuring as the notebook itself does feel a bit fragile.

Regarding light bleed, tried to watch a movie in a darkened room the other night and it was light bleed city. Thought i could boost the power or saturation a bit but just couldnt get a decent black level. Still watchable though. Ended up just toting the notebook downstairs and hdmi'ing a 1080p hd rip through the projector - looked awesome.

I have bios 208 and nvidia 258.96. I don't suspect that it would be the nvidia, since silverlight doesn't use 3d graphic cards. I've tried watching netflix in windows media center and internet explorer. The blue screen happens no matter where I watch from, at about 18 minutes of viewing. I also tried force running the windows media center with the nvidia card, but couldn't get the nvidia to switch on for it. A restore or fresh install might solve the problem. However, I'm hesitant because I just purchased and installed Office 2010, and if did a restore, one of my licenses for the product will probably just go to waste. The other problem is, what if a fresh restore or install doesn't fix the issue. Again, I tried to uninstall silverlight and re-install, to no avail. Also used ccleaner to clean the registry. A new computer from the factory should be able to handle something like this. I shouldn't be getting blue screens. Never had a problem with other computers blue screening to watch netflix.

Someone in this thread mentioned about how the U35JC whine goes away when you close down Google Chrome. I noticed the same thing today.

When I am not using a web browser I cannot hear it. Hmm.

So then what is Chrome engaging that increases the whine compared to the OS with no Chrome open? Very strange.

Yep. This seems to be a consistent problem on all of ASUS' U & UL screens including my U30Jc. Very high light-bleed. To be fair, my wife's 1-yr old white, 13" MB & my Dell Vostro 1000 15" have equally as bad light bleed in full screen movies (we've tested them all side-by-side.) For $900 when I bought mine, I wish they'd put in a better contrast screen. Those washed-out gray-blacks are very annoying on my laptop. I'm saving for an external HDTV monitor.

The NEW 13" MB has an awesome screen equal now to the MBP.

Thanks for your reply. My wife just ping me that the laptop has arrived (Made her to work from home for this - :)).

    Have some questions....

-------. Install Nvidias latest drivers ,official is the 259, but I am using the 260 and it works fine.---
From the Asus support page, I see the Nvidia driver with latest version as V8.17.12.5741 . Is this the one u r talking about ?

--------If would be best if you did a Clean install as this model is LOADED with bloaware and crap you dont really need---
How do I do a clean install ? Like mentioned here ? http://forum.notebookreview.com/win...-7-download-links-just-like-vista-before.html

---------. Once you have installed everything and are ready to go, plug your laptop and do a Windows Experience with SHE off ---
    What is SHE ?

-----------Tell us your discharge rate and time remaining---
    Will do that

    Thanks again!!!!

Also fatwallet has 3% cashback. My total after coupon and cash back is about 718 bucks shipped. used an amex card to extend the warranty for a 3rd year, plus 1% cash back more.

btw, SHE is "super hybrid engine." It's a perk in these laptops by lowering power consumption and increasing battery life. It's also suppose to also boost performance at times, but the people here haven't really seen that. So people have been turning it off, when they want to see maximum performance.

Use the last 5 digits. That's the nVidia 257.41 drivers. As you said, the latest is the 260.63 Beta that is working well for several once they've done the BIOS flash update.

Yes, clean install by creating a bootable Win 7 DVD from the suitable ISO image file (Win 7 x64 Home Premium for most of us) and installing from that or, if you have no external DVD drive, then you can install via a USB flash drive.

SHE is part of your Power4Gear called "Super Hybrid Engine" (it's either on or off) that throttles down your CPU even further for even more battery saving.

Its hard to pick it up with a camera. I can only hear it when its ABSOLUTELY quiet. It is very intermittent and it is not constant. Its not LOUD either. Its just high pitched.

Ah, that kind of helps. It's just that the noise is the only thing stopping me from pulling the trigger, especially at $749.99. I'll be using it at the library a lot like many people before have mentioned and don't want to annoy anyone or anything.

I'm considering buying the U35JC for every day college use, because of it's price, performance, small size and low weight, great battery, and stylish looks.

Are there any better 13 inch laptops for college out there for about the same price? Or will I be thoroughly satisfied with the U35JC? Also, is there anything I should watch out for with this laptop?

I don't have the time to read a ton of pages about this laptop, so if someone who has it could fill me in, that would be great.

    Thank you

    Ok. Thanks encq. :)

I have 3 more years of college to go, so this is going to have to last at least that long.

    EDIT:
I am now seriously considering the U30JC-B1, because of it's optical drive.
I read on Amazon that it is a whole pound heavier. The weight difference isn't too much. About the same weight as a MBP 13".
Also, it has a 320gb HD instead of the 500gb in the U35JC.

What battery life differences would the U30JC-B1 and the U35JC have?

Are you keeping the Acer in your sig or will the U35jc replace it? I'm frequently between the 3820TG thread and here, not totally certain on a model yet. The i5 and ATI will come out on top (though not available in the US :()but it'd be interesting to see a comparison of the two for weight, heat dissipation, the screen and such. A few 3Dmark06 scores wouldn't hurt either. :)

Well, I think the 35 is the better buy

U30 has an optical drive which it will decrease your battery life
and it has some major difference

    1. shorter hdd
    2. 512 mb for the video card while the U35 has one full gb
3.its thicker and who wants that >_<
    4. shorter battery life

I would recommend a MPB but youre getting lesser specs for more money

U35 is a good laptop and everything is online now so you dont relaly need a drive, but its handy when burning music to friends or watching movies and whatnot or installing games from the store

also the high pitch sound is similar to that Dog whistle app

I am in class right now and cant even hear it

but when I am alone with nothing but the notebook running
    its very noticeable

    it just annoying

    also the screen

    its viewing angle SUCKS

My dad says an optical drive is important for doing things like watching a DVD, making recovery disks, etc. And I agree with him for the most part.

I do have a gaming desktop at home though.

Like I said, it's practically the same weight as a MBP.
The B1 probably wont have the noise issue, so that's nice.

I won't be playing games on it either, but I do like to watch HD movies on occasion.

Also, it would be nice to hear from someone who owns the U30JC-B1

    nvm found my mistake
    silly mistake

After hibernating my computer on battery saving mode, since ASUS switches my desktop to a blank ASUS wallpaper which i dont mind but after a few hours when i finally do plug it back in and switch to high performance mode for gaming, I notice that the wallpaper doesnt switch back
is it supposed to do that or after resuming windows and changing modes to high performance, am i supposed to just manually change my wallpaper back?

hi everyone, i've been reading this for a while and i got a U45JC about 2 weeks ago

    i've got a question though
my idle temps with SHE on are 48/55,and the fan is always running on low (still audible)
when SHE is off, my idle temps kick up to 58/65 and the fan kicks up one level too. at this point, it becomes much more audible

does this happen to everyone too?
its quite annoying how the fan is always on , and gets louder when SHE is off

Decided to download/update the latest power4gear hybrid (1.1.40 added 3 Sep 10)... seems to work fine but installing it removed the SHE app. Seems like it is incorporated into Power4Gear now?? All the settings have the SHE logo on them and there doesn't appear to be a way to turn SHE on or off... looks like battery life and power are both still good but definitely different. Anyone else try it?

I don't think so. My ODD doesn't seem to use battery when it is not being used or accessed.

    1. Yep, 500 vs 320 GB.

    2. Quite the opposite. The U30Jc-A1's 310M w/ 512MB VRAM & 2.26GHz scores 3700+ in 3DMark06. The U35Jc's 310M w/ 1GB VRAM & 2.4GHz scores 3400+. The extra VRAM is marketing hype/unhelpful on the 310M since it's the 310M's core itself that is slowing things down; the real bottleneck.

    3. Thicker seems to also mean cooler. The U30 is cooler and therefore more overclockable. (Tried to reach my GPU clocks yet? I can safely o'c my 310M to score 4300+ in 3DMark06). But, yes, the U30 is clunkier appearing. The U35's 310M is underclocked.

    4. I get mixed reports on the battery. How much are you getting with the Battery Saving mode on, wifi on, one web page open (no flash) & 30% brightness? What does BatteryMon say your discharge rate is? I know with SHE on you should get down to 7200mW. I get down to 8500mW and a real 8.5 hrs, more if the wifi is off. Can you really get 10 hrs with your U35Jc?

The U30Jc also has a bad vertical viewing angle and light bleed issues. But color-wise, it is a beautiful screen.

You can set up the Battery Saving mode in Power4Gear so that it doesn't turn off your desktop wallpaper when you use that mode.

I would pay 100 bucks more to have a thinner laptop

    I only overclock my desktops

U35 screen has really bad vertical viewing angle too

i prefer like this rather than manually activate it...

previous ver 1.1.38 also like this, but only got s.h.e on battery saving mode..

mine can get better battery life with s.h.e activated..

btw im using batterycare to monitor my battery...

    also,

why dont you connect your U30JC to a larger monitor and lets see what your scores are

you do realize that extra 512 mb is used to fill bigger screens, right

    quatro?

I just learned something new...thanks trueyears.

Most reviews say the extra 512mb can't be utilized by the chip. So atleast it serves a purpose for me...since i'll be hooking it up to my tv every once in awhile.

I think the U30JC is a awesome laptop but right now
I have connected a U35 to my awesome Asus LOL 24" screen and having extra 512 is pretty awesome

I'm keeping the 3820TG, that notebook won't go anywhere, no replacement here (I think it's safe to say it's a portable "powerhouse" even with the 430M ). The U35 or U30 (or 3820T, or 4820T - still to be decided) would be for light office work and taking notes during presentations, that's why ULV models, and models with IGP are considered.

Now, I must read a lot pages back to see what flaws these models have, and how they behave.

It might be a 3820T or TG afterall, since it provides a decent battery life, though not as great as the U35.
I have like 2 months to pull the trigger, if the decision is made, I'll do the comparsion You've asked for.

Check out the http://forum.notebookreview.com/acer/501992-acer-3820tg-north-america-purchase-options.html thread its not impossible to get those babies in the US, plus I remember one of the members posting about possible warranty extension and localization.

    Sorry for the OT.
