The first one is a bit heavier, well according to Amazon's product details... I just ordered the ASUS U36SD-DH51 today just to make sure.

The specs on Amazon for the U31sd are wrong. The U31 is actually a little over an inch thick. The U36 is thinner and lighter than the U31. The case of the U31 is mostly plastic where as the U36 is a mg alloy. Internally the two are almost the same spec wise, but you do get USB 3.0 on the U36 and a slightly more powerful CPU (i5 2430 vs 2410). U31 only has USB 2.

If you were actually wondering about the u36sd a1 vs u36sd dh51 then the only difference is the processor in the 2. Physically they are the same.

Ive purchased one of the older U3x Asus models before and was wondering why the U31 was so thick. Swapped it for the U36SD and much better - thinner and lighter (yet stronger). Very nice and portable machine, thanks for the info!

Just bought the U31 AH51. Really only two significant differences between the two: nicer/thinner case on the U36 (all metal vs plastic with aluminum top on the U31) and the U36 has a single USB 3.0 port. Amazon is giving a $75 gift card w/U31 purchase right now... so about a $250 difference... so unless you REALLY want the nicer looking/thinner/stronger case and/or need 3.0, I'd save the near 30% difference and go with the U31... you get the exact same processor, RAM, video, monitor, etc.
