I'd classify my power button as a bit 'recessed' (i.e. poor mechanical alignment between the top of the button and the surrounding plastic surface). It works though; just have to know how to press it.

I can imagine if yours is a bit worse than mine, it'll be an issue....

Sounds like it may be voltage fluctuation giving you low voltage. Are you getting power straight from the single USB or some other means? Can you power from a wall wart or some other means to test the theory?

The issue happened more frequently on battery, but we were able to make it happen when both the laptop was plugged in and when the hard drive was plugged in through a powered USB hub. (The hard drive does not have its own power cable). I think its a voltage fluctuation too, but its isolated to the usb 3.0 chip/port

    i have a couple questions.

    1. does the laptop come with 1x4gb or 2x2gb ram sticks? I would like to upgrade to 8gb

    2. Is the keyboard assembly similar to macbooks? Basically what i mean is that is keyboard actually a replaceable unit unlike the macbooks where you have to replace the entire upper case including touchpad etc.

The U36SD is coming to Europe this September, I can't wait to sell my DM1z and Samsung for it.

One thing im worrying about is the heat and battery life of this thing, how does it perform against the older model the U36JC?

Also has anyone tried using 'Throttlestop' to control the CPU speed? Has Asus locked the bios as i've seen some people mention that some Sandy Bridge laptop are being bios locked.

    Thanks

    EDIT: http://www.netbooklive.com/asus-u36sd-u36s-review-10068/

I figured out that the Asus U36SD gets extremely hot compared to the U36JC, is this true? Or is that his model was a test model and the final product you guys have got have an improved thermal support?

So is the CPU soldered or not in this laptop?

From page 21 of this thread.

Actually looks like epoxy, not solder. Either way, the CPU is directly attached to the motherboard so it can't be upgraded.

Why has no one done any stress testing yet to see how hot this thing really gets? Seems like there's no shortage of owners on here.

Bump on this question, express gate really got me excited when I bought this laptop and it doesn't even work :( It seems that the driver isn't out for express gate yet.. Does anybody know when it might be? I'm sure they wouldn't be so stupid as to have the button on the machine...but not have it do anything..

As I type this, the machine is maintaining a steady 82C with 4 threads of Prime95 running (P4G High Performance). It's sitting on my lap, so it's not getting great airflow to the bottom of the case, but it's also not uncomfortably hot on my leg. Only part of the case that I'd call warm is the area under the fan (left of the touchpad). Rest of the case has no noticeable change in temperature (Vertex 2 held steady at 30C during the entire test).

Switching to Quiet Office mode, HWMonitor shows 51C for Core #0 and 45C for Core #1.

Thank you for that. Have you done any testing using the CPU and GPU combined? For some Sandy Bridge laptops, that is what brings out the throttling problems if there are any. It's more heat for the cooling system to deal with than just the cpu. Furmark and Prime95 or a CPU intensive game would be the way to look for this. Everything is looking good so far!

That's the U21 and the U31 the article is talking about, right?

I've asked ASUS Online Technical Service and the person just told me to download ExpressGate from ASUSTeK Computer Inc. -Support- Drivers and Download ExpressGate

BUT, I've installed it and it still does not work! The only thing left to do, might be to try the ExpressGate driver provided to U36JC users. I'm hesitant on doing this as it may damage the laptop.

Does it look like we can replace the keyboards on this? I quite want the U36SD-A1 since I can get it from either Newegg.ca or NCIX.ca (eventually) here in Canada. However, at some point, I'd want to get a replacement keyboard from the UK and swap it myself?

Had this thing since friday. This laptop is crazy. Thanks to the M4 SSD, my laptop is dead silent and just crazy fast. (If any of you also ordered a config with the M4 SSD, I highly recommend updating to firmware 0009). Its also comfortable to use on the palm rest as it doesn't even get warm. The bottom however is a little warm but I still am able to use it comfortably on my lap. Also helps that I have IC Diamond thermal paste applied.

    Here's my WEI score:

I don't know if you care about WEI score but it you put your theme in classic mode or close dwm.exe. Then refresh your WEI score, your Graphic for Desktop performance should increase, I think you'll be able to get into the 6's :p if you care xD!

Haha thanks for the advice! Yeah I already knew that but I kinda need windows aero since I use UxStyle for custom visuals. I'd rather have a slick looking desktop than a ugly looking one :D

I tested the battery on 2 modes so far; the power4gear entertainment mode and power4gear battery saving mode.

Power4gear on battery lasted me a good 7 hours before displaying that i had to plug in my charger. During this time I browsed the internet, watched 720p youtube videos, transferred some files via usb 3.0 and left it on idle for about an hour. My screen brightness was at 5 and min and max processor set at 0 and 80 respectively.

Battery saving mode is still kicking for me. Been unplugged for about 6 hours now and windows says i still got 4:47 minutes to go. Pretty impressive. Initially, I set it to the lowest brightness but sometimes I turn it a notch 1 or 2 levels. Min and max processor is at 0 and 50 respectively. Turned off usb 3.0 and the webcam camera too. Been doing word processing all day so it's definitely gonna be great for school for me. All this with wifi on too, bluetooth off.

If anyone's interested, I also tested the widi features that came with the intel 6230 wireless card. 1080p videos streams perfectly with no hiccups or compression artifacts for me with a perfect 5 bar connection. Pretty cool feature but for those with a weak connection, HDMI may be better suited for you.

Thermal paste is usually good for up to 3degrees depending on what the OEM used and based upon you applying it correctly with no air pockets.

i don't have the asus so i don't know how it works but with toshiba there is a program from them that assign program to certain key. So look for similar program from asus. BTW, how are you guys feeling about this laptop? How is the heat while gaming? I almost buy this laptop but went for the acer 3820tg instead because of the dual fan design.

    Hi everybody!

Just purchased this notebook (I-5 model): I tried it for a few days, then I created the HDD image and I decided to format the stock installation to start a new fresh one.
I installed Windows 7 Ultimate and the minimum package of driver (last version for all of them, downloaded from Asus website). I know Nvidia and Intel have both some pretty fresher drivers, but Nvidia says that "their driver are not certified for some features my notebook might have", and therefore I decide to use only the Asus driver.
    So, I installed:

    Chipset Intel INF Update
    Intel video driver
    Nvidia Video driver
    USB3 & Usb3 charger plus utility
Another Intel driver the Laptop found into the Asus driver DVD
Lan drivers (leaving the laptop browsing for them into the USB pendrive)
Wi-Fi drivers(Leaving the laptop bla bla..)
    Azurewave Bluetooth driver
    Power4gear
    Hot-key package

Nothing more, no camera drivers (camera has been recognized by Win stock drivers); no Synaptic drivers, no asus update, no Intel Turbo boost monitor, no other audio drivers, no Intel Management Engine Interface, no card-reader driver, nothing more.

Well, the problem is the battery: it definitely lasts less than before the fresh installation.

Is there any setting I should correct to set the battery saving? Is Windows7 Ultimate that eats so much power??!

    Thank you :)
