1: definitely hardware problem ( you might want to just go back and ask them to replace the unit if it's still under the return policy from where you bought it )

2: you mean when you physically press the power button or when you shut down the laptop via the Start menu?

3: have you installed the latest sound driver for the Asus?

    Hello everybody!
    My U36SD (i7 / 2.7 GHz) came in just yesterday :)

Overall I'm happy with it (much impressed by the power of the graphics - Anno 1404 with highest quality settings, yeah!), but the fan is driving me nuts!
It's constantly turning on and off when the Asus is in idle, even in Energy Saving or Quiet Office mode. It goes on for about 5 seconds and off again. This repeats after a short period of time. Why can't it run on low speed just constantly?

Is this a defect or do you all have the same fan behavior?

Edit: Today, I used my U36SD with a clean Win 7 setup, on Battery and in Energy Saving mode. The machine was sitting on my bed getting software installed, but it stayed so cool that the fan did not turn on! After three hours it turned on for only 2 seconds, doing that two or three times more, but I could hardly hear the fan! The fan is much quieter on my bed than on my table.
I don't know yet if it has anything to do with the clean Win 7, the fact that I only used battery or that I hadn't head it up with Anno 1404 before. When it keeps being quiet like this, I would be happy.

I'm still very impressed by the battery life, performance and slimness!

--- I'll have to send it in to ASUS since my 30 day Staples Return policy expired. Do you know how the warranty process works with ASUS? What do I have to do to get it replaced?

--- No, its when I use the start menu

--- Yep, the audio problem is gone. thanks

There's a nice guide one of our senior members wrote up here (it's actually stickied at the top of this forum for future reference):

I'm seeing 3 partitions on the harddrive.
    1. 25gb empty(?)
    2. 238gb OS
    3. 332gb data

What is the 25gb partition for? Is there any downside to merging all three of them together?

the 25GB is the hidden recovery partition. you can burn the recovery DVD and delete the partition.

I just ordered one from TigerDirect through Amazon for $699. It was the U36 or the Vaio SA for me but the SA would end up costing me $400 more. I like the U36 keyboard better, too.

I was almost going to ask for help, since I did this and it still wasn't working. Turns out the problem was that the touchpad requires more force for it to work, and by pressing harder I was able to two finger scroll. I wish it didn't take as much force (and was more precise) but that's the only real problem I've had with the laptop so far.

    Hi,

I installed a OCZ Agility SSD in my U36SD and when attempting to install Windows7 64bit, it asks for the drivers as it does not detect any hard disks. The SSD shows up fine in the BIOS and boot menu. It does not matter if I change the mode from IDE to AHCI or vice versa. Can someone point me in the right direction please? I've tried extracting the chipset drivers to USB drive but doesn't seem to be the correct drivers.

OS - Win7 x64 Ultimate. I do not have the restore DVDs.

download the intel rapid storage drivers from the asus website. unzip the folder and put it on the flash drive you were using to install windows. When it asks, just point it to that driver. The installation should work fine after that. Also make sure you are not using the usb 3.0 port for the install. You can boot from that drive, but the installation wont be able to see it.

Thanks so much for the reply. I completely forgot about trying that driver since its buried under the misc. category on the product support page. I'll try it tonight when I get home from work but pretty confident it will work. Thanks again!

I found the asus driver works better.

I saw a newer version of the driver on synaptics' site and decided to install it. After using the laptop for about 30 mins I decided to use the asus driver. Although it is an older driver I found that the touchpad works better. It requires less pressure so the two figure scroll is much smoother.

I'm having a problem with the speakers. I can only hear sound if I use my headphones. My speakers don't work. I don't think its a hardware problem because I can hear the ASUS startup jingle/sound through my speakers when I turn on my laptop. But once windows 7 is loaded, I can only hear through the headphones. Does anyone have a fix for this?

My drivers are upto date. I have tried both drivers (x64) posted on ASUS's website. I've also tried System Restore and it still doesnt work.

It's a common issue in the past the audio board needs to be replace, if the audio board is soldered on the mainboard then the mainboard will need to be replace.

The problem is it does not switch to laptop speakers when headset is disconnected. The Asus startup sound works differently and doesn't mean your sound card/audio jack is working properly.

Hi guys, I need some info... Lets say if I put Corsair Vengeance or Kingston Hyper-X both using DDR3 PC1600 rate into this model (mine is U36SD with i3 2330m), does it make any sense in term of performance increase? I'm afraid the i3 2330m can't utilize anything more than DDR3 PC1333. Am I right?

I'm having two fairly major issues with my u36sd-a1. Hopefully I can get some feedback.

I'm running a clean install of win 7 and have the latest chipset drivers installed from Intel.

When I put the computer to sleep and wake it, the first core in speedfan goes to 100 percent utilization. As expected, the temp of the processor begins to increase. I can replicate it every time. Could someone install speedfan and check to see if this is perhaps a factory defect?

Also, I installed a Sata 3 ssd which quieted the system. Now I can hear fairly noticeably from the rear left hand side, electronic noise that appears to be cpu whine. This is not fan noise as it is most noticeable when the fan is not running. Anyone have a fix for this? I am willing to take it apart again.

Is anyone using a high end sata 3 ssd with this laptop? Are you getting 400+ R/W rates? I heard that perhaps the Sata III chipset is weak.

Lastly, GentechPC, Are you selling the new U44SG? If so, could you perhaps give me some info on the type of SSD being used (throughput etc.), the type of 14" screen and bezel (is it matte)? Since it is likely using the same board is this laptop plagued with the same issues? If I can get some good info I will gladly purchase the laptop from you.

    Any feedback is appreciated.

    Thanks.

The CPU whine is because of the power management set CPU to low power state.

Try play with advanced power options to see if the noise goes away.

For U44SG it's confirmed by Asus this model is canceled and not coming to US anymore, at least not until June.
