I think I have narrowed it down to this laptop - it fits all of my requirements - mobility/weight, fast, 14" display, long battery life, USB3.0

I see that standard it comes with a DVDRW drive. I don't really need one. XoticPC allows customisation to swap that for a second HDD (which I would prefer). Is it possible to change over the DVD drive for a HDD yourself after buying the laptop?

Does anyone have any other feedback on this laptop?

Can anyone help with how easy it is to replace the Optical Drive bay with a HDD bay on ASUS laptops?

Depends on how easy obtaining the caddy and other parts for the U43 would be, and there is the potential that this kind of aftermarket mod (if done yourself) could void Asus' warranty since generally they only allow HDD and RAM upgrades. If Xotic does it for you, then your warranty probably shifts over to them for anything rather than Asus (you should confirm that with Xotic staff).

It could well require taking most of the chassis apart, depending on how far down below the motherboard position all of the screws etc are for the drive. Doing things with the motherboard often involve breaking screw seals that void warranty. Again, Xotic may be willing to discuss these details with you if you contact them.
