I'll be starting University in September and i plan on buying a laptop before i start. Luckily, i'll also be visiting USA & Canada most likely from the 24th of this month for two weeks.

My two contenders so far for 13"-14", lightweight, powerful laptops are the Asus U46SV and the MSI x460dx. I wanted to get the view of members of this forum on both brands because I've never owned either brands.

Personally I prefer ASUS's U46SV, since ASUS historically has been better at thermal management (while MSI historically has been less than satisfactory). However, given such slim profile, I think thermal management on both laptop would be quite poor.

For the exterior, I also prefer ASUS's U46SV. I think the MSI X460DX looks quite similar to other laptops.

But hey, I'm just an ASUS fanboy, so what do I know? :p

In my experience, ASUS laptop has been very reliable. I've owned HP, Acer / Gateway, and ASUS, and only ASUS laptops are the ones that haven't let me down. Historically ASUS's products are very reliable.

However, the downside is that in a case where you need contact ASUS's customer service, you might need to be a little more patient, as ASUS's customer service is probably one of the worst in the industry. Some people have better chance dealing with them (i.e. me), and others have such a difficult time that they swore not to buy ASUS products again.

My take? If you know your way around a laptop, and can perform simple repairs, ASUS is definitely the better pick. If you'd rather have better customer service, than the choice is not that clear cut.

If you want the best customer service, get a business-line laptop.

ASUS laptops are usually pretty well built though.

You need to explain surface because that covers a lot of things

It's a little bit of a different texture if it's the same case, which it looks to be, as the U46E uses. I don't really know how to describe it and it's not bad necessarily but might take some getting used to.
