After a few days playing around I managed to get the camera working fine under XP. Those of you that have a U6 with a SM370/CMOS/MVI-SV1103 camera might want to use this driver workaround. The README.txt file explains everything.

wow, you are amazing. the xp webcam problem was the only thing holding me back from getting this computer!

i also called the asus technical support people and they told me the U6S uses a Chicony camera. They suggested I try to find a driver from them. I'm trying to poke around the website now...

fmjrey, do you think this would be helpful? It might be worth a look!

It will certainly be useful to those that have a Chicony camera. My U6S has a Silicon Motion camera (aka SM370, CMOS, or MVI-SV1103) so I can't really try any Chicony software. But while looking for a working driver for my model I remember seing plenty of Chicony camera software around so I'm pretty sure it will be easier to get it working on XP than the SM one.
Has anyone succesfully made the chicony camera on Asus U6 work in XP?

Asus recently released XP drivers and a new BIOS for U6Sg (but not for U6S). See their support site.
I assume the U6Sg "MVI-SV1103 Camera Driver for WIN XP" would also work on U6S. I have yet to try them on my machine. If anyone tries them, let us know the outcome!
Direct download links for "MVI-SV1103 Camera Driver for WIN XP" v5.1.3.4: Global, USA, Europe, China, Japan

XP support for an Sg version? Nice.

If that driver doesn't work, just connect with a FTP client to the ASUS download servers, and roam around the model folders until you find a compatible Chicony XP driver (if you're lucky you might be able to tell from the ZIP file name). I know the W7S folder has one, for a 1.3 MP camera.

Well, when I first installed XP on my U6S, I spent a lot of time on Asus FTP server searching for a compatible driver for the integrated webcam. The workaround above is the only thing that worked. So this new driver that Asus released for U6Sg may not work on U6S. And BTW, the webcam in my U6S is not a Chicony...

    Then this:
    is incorrect :)

I wasn't trying to say that the posted workaround isn't necessary, I was giving suggestions on how to look for the drivers.

Yes I realize that. I was just expressing how my hope to find a good driver on Asus ftp/website for the U6 non-Chicony webcam went away after many trial and error. That explains my lack of enthusiasm in trying the new XP webcam driver for U6Sg, which may not work at all on my U6S. It looks like I may have to reinstall windows at some point, so I'll try then...
