My "Hands-on" mode is still on,so here is another one for you! This time, for U80!
![]()
Build Quality:With it's latest generation of notebooks,Asus's slogan fully matches their-Rock Solid! No flex,no cheap parts!Everything looks and feels sturdy! Only thing I notice was "loose" cover of optical drive, but I was assured that it is only a "pre-production model defect".
![]()
The Screen: Asus U80 has glossy 14" LED backlit display. It has yyyyXyyy* resolution. The display is crystal clear and the colors are vivid!

Viewing angels are average.
Keyboard and Touchpad: Keyboard on U80 is Sony style, and is very easy to type on!Keys are reasonably big and hard to miss! Also,it has backliting, which is a feature that I like very much!
![]()
Touchpad is...awesome! It is made from glass_like material(very easy to "move" fingers on it) and has a _cool backliting.

![]()
I think it was made just to impress, not as something really useful!

I/O Ports:

(Righ side:Express Card slot,Optical drive,USB post)
![]()
(Left Side:"Lock" slot,VGA,HDMI,USB ports)
Not bad,but not great either since it lacks eSata!
Specification and Performance
![]()
This notebook, which can be configured with Intel C2D t9400, ATI 4570 with 512MB of DDR 2 memory and 4GB of RAM(max),won't be able to play latest game on high settings, but it will be more then enough for day-to-day tasks and occasional gaming.
![]()
Early Conclusion:This notebook is a great all-around: It has nice screen, good performance(for 14"),excellent battery life(according to Asus) and their rep. said that it will cost less then 1000$.Not bad...

GOD! The term sweet doesnt describe this thing, plus rep for you bro you really deserve it.
-
Might want to fix that.
U80 looks pretty good, what resolution is the screen? -

A typo or a joke? lol -
Less than one-hundred-us-dollars? Are you serious? OMG..
-
Nice observations!
However, I'd be VERY skeptical on the "less than $100" comment by the rep.
For some reason, the glossy palm rests doesn't look so appealing to me. It kinda cheapens the look from the traditional U series business-like notebooks. -
Sorry guys,forgot 0
4:30 am here(1:30 here, but i am still adjusted to my "home time")...
-
$1000 sounds more reasonable.
-
forgot to look, was taking pictures in rush...it was 5:50 and they ware closing the stand @ 6.
-
Probably 1366 x 768 then.
-
-
will tell u tomorrow! also,i am writing for u20 and s121
-
-
wow,it is an honor to hear that from review_guru!
btw,if there are other notebooks you want me to check just pm me
-
i think it looks better then the current n80/n81 but again looks like a finger print magnet. Looks like revisions have been made to the keyboard and the added under lighting. No keyboard flex like n80 i guess
?
good job btw i was about to order the n80 today but you kind of made me not -
Just searched it a bit more and found more pics

what is the 4570 equivalent to?
-
no fingerprint reader
maybe facial recognition? -

This looks like a pretty cool notebook, great preview. The only thing I question is the glossy all around look, I think it makes it look too plasticy and cheap. Also, if there are no ports on the back, it seems pretty short on ports.
-
Now get your hands on a U20 please
-
Check out the U50 if it's there. I'm mainly interested in what GPU it has and what the maximum screen resolution is. That and maybe some pics if you're able
Please and thank you.
-
thats looking really nice, though having a numpad I find myself using it more then I thought I would of
-
will write the "text" soon!
-
Xirurg, I will worship you if you get some hands on with the UX 15.6" laptop.
The U is a bit too fat for me, and I lurvvve teh matte/glossy combo of the UX. -
I was looking for it yesterday but couldn't find it...will give it another try today
-
Another great job Xirug, next time if you can grab a screen shot of there WIE score to give us a refrence point to it's possible performance potential.
Did ASUS have any newer 13" ultraportables at the show. -
Thanks Ikas! I ll take a screen shot of WIE if you want, but it is worthless cos it is too inaccurate.
Yes,I was writing one for U20 but my pics were to blurry so I decided to write for S121 and then for U20 when I get better pics-is there a specific model you would like me to visit? -
So whens the U50 up?
-
in couple of hours I guess...Cebit is too big...
-
All of them!
And I do know WIE score doesn't really mean much, but just want to know what scores they might have to see what they might be capable of.
Xirug, I'm now in the market for a nice 12"-13" ultraportable that can also handle some of the latest 3D games, I really like the ASUS F6Ve-B1, I seen the game Demos and benchmarks on Gentech, while the 4570 card is nice I'm looking to at least have one with a ATI 4650 like in the ASUS N81Vp-C1,but in a smaller form factor and I know they are not that much bigger in size, they are,the N81 is almost 2" wider(and the F6Ve is a lot better looking)I'm looking to get something more compact , + the K series looks very, very nice. Thanks again
-
OK,I am back from asus's stand-got new pics of U20 and S121(in white) and their new 14" notebook with ATI 4600 series GPU.
-
Wow, you work fast man
What's the new 14" notebook with ATI 4600 series GPU, more info Please and some pics but for now time to sleep! I'm going to have a nice dream -
it is called N80vp,with ATI 4650!
-
Lol, it was the one you were talking about, IKAS.
-
haha.lol.
plasma,I am sorry, but they said that they wont show U 50 today -
-
Well it looks like ATI's new mobile cards are making it to a lot of ASUS's laptops. That's reassuring to hear. Hopefully he U50 can fit a 46XX ddr3 card. 4860 seems like wishful thinking but if the K series can.. :X
-
Red_Dragon Notebook Nobel Laureate
lol Asus already has ATI's full lineup.
ATI is pretty smart they probably realize that they can still get a good chunk of the market from Asus notebooks in reality it is a win win for BOTH Companies. -
Looks good. When is this one coming out?
-
K Series: Gaming/Multimedia Enthusiast
U/UX series: Luxury Ultraportables/Design
That's why the Us wont have anything better than a 4650. -
A 4650 DDR3 is more than enough anyways. But the inner-gamer is always longing for that 4860 :X. -
Agreed a 4650 is enough but on the unit it says 4570.
The U80 does look very nice heres hoping it also comes with a 4650 GPU,like it's other 14" brother the N81 -
The N81 is tons thicker than the U80, I doubt it will have a 4650.
-
also,u80 .5 kg lighter then then N81
-
will come out around may or june
-
Red_Dragon Notebook Nobel Laureate
add july as well
-
that's a nice laptop
-
Well all 4000 Mobile series Gpu's are relatively the same size(except the new 40nm 4630/4680).
Plasma. are you saying that because the 4650's probably run hotter than the 4570? -
Red_Dragon Notebook Nobel Laureate
Well actually in reality the 4650 power consumption wise uses almost 2 times the power of the 4570. 4570 is a better choice battery wise and more likely a better choice in a thin/small notebook.
Asus U80 Hands-on!
