well i looked somthing up about switching the cpu. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f0HuExqBZrg (not the same laptop just a general idea)

Looks alittle difficult but defiantly doable

I'm going to benchmark the Crap out of the laptop when i get it this week, so i will let you know how it performs.

if you have any requests as to what you want to know, Let me know

*also most likely going to pop a windows 7 build on it.

Well, guess there's not much chance of a better cpu for the base unit when it makes it to the US. At least not for the same price range anyway. I'm sure gentech will allow us to pick a better cpu, which would be worth it, imo, even if it adds a few hundred to the price tag.

where's it say it comes out on the 17th?

sorrix, it'd be great if you tested some of the modern games, like CoD4. i mean if it can run that smoothly i'll be happy lol because it means it'll be able to run games that are a bit older =)

I'm french and I'm going crazy. I'm really fond of the U80 but I can't only find a test about it on the internet. Before I buy this notebook, I would like to know every little thing I can't guess just by looking at it and especially as far as the game part is concerned.

I'm not stupid. I don't want to buy the Asus U80 to play hardcore games, so I forget about all First Person Shooter games. But I'm quiet sure it would be able to make some new arcade games work very well.

So if you can, I suppose so, install a game like Velvet Assassin, Wolverine, Ghostbusters, SF IV, Prototype... and tell us if it works and how it works, it would be great.

    Thank you by advance.

I'm in Aus and it looks like some online retailers are beginning to get them in. Trouble is, locally there are few suppliers and brick and mortar retailers displaying the U80.... I'd like to see it hands on first.

Specs are perfect for what I want, its just the screen quality and build that are my main concerns.

Hi guys and ladies (of course ;-P),

Sorry for the long silence but i've been pretty busy (summer time in Paris is just awesome) and actually didn't get more than 1 hours or so to play with my new laptop yet. But time will come to that ...

Anyway my first impressions, the quality seems alright except for the DVD drive, which is nearly already falling apart ... That bit got 99,999% chance of breaking at some stage unless you only use your laptop as a desk replacement. I'm quite sorry to see that ...
The touchpad is reactive and nice. Clearly i also confirm that you'll be able to identify yourself by your fingerprints even if there isn't any TPM ;-P
The facial recognition works one on twice ... it's amused me as i never had this feature before but i guess on the long run it might not be that usefull unless they improve the soft later on.
The express gate is quite cool as half of the time i only need to get onto the net or put on some music. So that would be useful to me.
There is a bit too much bloatware to my taste but a bit of cleaning will see to that. Never had vista on my own laptop before and i'm not sure i'm gonna like it. Anyone has an idea on when Seven will be available (to see if it is worth re-installing with XP or waiting for a bit) ?

That said, i'ven't been testing or anything of the sort for a very long while. I'm happy to run tests and so on if you give me links on what to dl to get the tests done. Then i'll try to get some time to give you sth.

@ Kay_1978 : I'm sorry but i'ven't been gaming for a long while. I don't have any recent games ... If you are in France PM me and we can have chat if you like.

So i'm alright to play the guinea pig seeing how many ppl are waiting for more info on this one but if you play along with me, eg. give the info i need to run whatever you want to see and i'll dot it (when i can of course) ...

    Let me know

Hi guys, I'm french so don't blame me for my english.

U80V is out for a couple of days in France with P8700 @ 2,53 Ghz, ATI 4570, 500 Go HDD and 4 Go RAM, but you already know it.

A brand new french buyer put comments on this machine after he made a few tests with some games and this is what I can tell about that :

    Street Fighter 4 : 30 FPS @ 1360 x 768, rank E 7337 points, but quiet fluent smooth framerate it seems.

Crysis (big mistake for me but it seems I'm wrong because...) : it runs good in middle set up @ 1360 x 768, but the game needs the AC adaptator because Crysis does not like to run on the battery, since it becomes a real power point LOL.

Need 4 Speed Undercover : works @ 1024 x 600 but with no anti aliasing and others stuffs but we don't care because this game was horrible, and unplayable because of the bad directing/making.

    It seems quiet encouraging ...

This needs to come out!! How did Best Buy get theirs so early!? I would get their U81A model, but it's seriously gimped. I was originally thinking of the UX50V, but the U80V has better specs and even longer battery life, right? I'd take that over the more stylish look and slot load drive of the UX50V.

UX50's a sexy laptop alright, but it's a little bit weak on the graphics side with a 105M. Still, it's the first time I saw a slot load OD on an ASUS.

    U80V FTW! ;)

I just do not get what is up with this notebook. None of the USA online retailers have it available, nor an ETA.

This thing has taken so long that i am contemplating a 15.6" notebook with a new GT 2xx GPU in it (like the Asus N51Vn).

not really a bold prediction, but this won't be out July 17, 18, or even 19th from online retailers.

It hasn't even showed up on Xotic, Gentech, or ExcaliberPC.

Excaliber has two notebooks that are not yet out yet (F50SF and N51Vn) but have nothing on the U80 (yet they have the U20).

And based on insider information I am doubting we will see this in July at all. This laptop is so nice looking I am passing up on the N81 and the GFX card I would really want for this (love the battery life, weight, and looks).

Well they have been canadian resellers that have been taking orders for the U80. It will cost you a little more but the joy of owning one now instead of waiting in limbo may be priceless.

I will hold out. I have been putting off my notebook purchase from since christmas last year so I can wait a little longer. My old notebook is barely useable now so hopefully it isnt much longer.

I would like to be optimistic and say that there is no way it will take so long to get here but we are in Mid July and nothing.

It would take less than a month to get a word on them and get them available, so there is hope. But if by the end of July we hear nothing then something odd is going on.

Maybe they are looking to refresh the video card on them????

Considering the amount of Canadians who order form US resellers and have it shipped, can't US customers do the opposite? I'm fairly sure quite a few of the resellers are willing to ship. That's a scenario where the U80V wouldn't come to the US market for a while that is.

even now there're canadian resellers who WILL ship internationally, if you preorder now. look back a page or two, there were some listed there.

That's a good option for those whom are impatient :p

The only potential issue I see is regarding customer support - those whom have purchased from Canadian resellers will have to deal with Asus directly, while others whom have purchased from US Asus resellers can take advantage of the reseller's support which is often better and faster.

I have never owned a laptop before( more than a month) but this is one that I am really looking at. I hope it comes out in the next month or 2 since I will be moving sometime in October. Seems like Asus is a lot more reliable. I owned a HP but crapped out in less than a week so I returned it, ugh..

I like the Asus fast boot thing for internet and basics for when I would be in class or on the move. I could go on, but I am going to just keep looking at the pictures

I spent sometime going through a list of retailers who sell asus products and finally got one deal.

I called Tigerdirect and they said they have 4 from the manufacture. Call them at this number

Tigerdirect 1-800-955-1888 ext 5924 name is Octavio

Tell octavio that you want to purchase the laptop and he will set it up.

There are 4 left and the price is 1273. ( 1176 with 9 percent discount that he is giving) NOT SURE ABOUT SHIPPING

That is too much for me, but I am sure plenty of you would buy for that price.

    Here are the specs

Asus U80V-A1 (He said something about an A2 version, but you ask him more on that)

    T6500
    4GB ram
    320GB
    ATI Radeon HD4570
    14.1"
    HDMI
    3usb
    express
    wifi
    1.3 mp webcam

CALL THEM QUICK CUZ only 4 LEFT

It's the form factor. We were expecting around 1000$USD so 1100-1200$CAD isn't too far form the mark. Arguably the CPU could've been better, but if you wanted heavy CPU power you'd look elsewhere anyways.

I assumed the $1273 from Tiger Direct is USD so far a T6400 that is too expensive. The Canadian retailers have it for cheaper.

Ugh, I'm beginning to get quite discouraged at this point. I'm not sure that the price we've been seeing for the u80v with t6500 is justified, considering I can get that sony with a p8700 for around 1180, and no international shipping to deal with. I'm giving it another week to see if Asus surprises us, and then I'm probably going to get the sony, much as it pains me....
