I don't think he got that from Taiwan. The stickers are in english and it doesn't have those special characters on the keyboard.
Where did you buy the UL30JT?
-
i don't know about the keyboard, but the sticker is clearly not chinese. why don't we just ask him, lol.
actually, i kinda forgot that the asian keyboards have another extra set of characters on the keys... oops. oh well, i don't even look at my keyboard when i use it anyways (totally don't understand the point of back-lit keyboards - other than the cool factor).
i think i like the ul30jt's palmrest better than the u35jc, but it's a pretty small difference -
BTW everyone, the 258.96 drivers have now been WHQL-certified. You can get them HERE.
Yea, I'm sure you're right, not Taiwan. But I still think he's outside the US due to the i5 processor, J instead of JT and I don't think it's for sale yet in the US anyway ... is it?
No matter. I just PM'ed him. So we'll see. -
Yup i live at Indonesia, is allready been available in here from about 2 week ago.
-
It does have the i3-330UM, but its still called the UL30JT. Its on sale on Amazon for $849.99
Amazon.com: ASUS UL30JT-A1 13.3-Inch Laptop - Black: Computer & Accessories -
Oops. Sorry. Typo. I meant to write "JT". His Indonesian model is listed as UL30J (no T) which (as well as the i5) told me it was probably a non-US model.
And Amazon, GenTech & Xotic are all PRE-ORDER. None of them have it in stock yet and haven't had it in stock ... so it's not really physically for sale in the US yet and may not arrive until late August. It's only for pre-order for now. -
what's WHQL?
i think the ul30jt sold in taiwan also has J instead of JT on the stickers... not sure if it actually is J on the model number though. some guy in ASUS quality control is probably laughing at how confused we are by his monday morning mistake, lol -
Amazon lists it as in stock. Of course I wouldn't be surprised if thats just a mislisting.
-
I chat with an xotic sale. She said
"i know alot of the ASUS models got moved to end of August" -
Look at this claim made by asus on their back to school promotion page
i3-330UM goes up to 2.13 GHz??? No way. Must be typo but thought it was interesting to point out.
Here is the source: ASUS UL80Jt -
Google is your friend:
-
Oh wow. That JUST happened later today. Well-spotted!
HERE'S the link for $849 and free shipping ....
... of course GenTechPC & XoticPC have it for $819 and free shipping.
-
It lists the weight as 4.2 pounds. Is this right? I thought the UL30vt and u35jc are 3.7 pounds?
-
Yes. 3.7 lbs
-
What size is the AC adapter on the ul30jt? If its the same size as the ul30vt does anyone have pics of that one?
-
Here are three reviews with lots of photos, if that helps!
Asus UL30JT review
ASUS UL30Jt review #2
Taiwan UL30Jt review
BTW, on the Taiwanese review, I find it hard to open picture links when looking at the page through Google Translate, so if the photos are important, you may want to ignore Google Translate for the moment.
Here's a photo of the AC adaptor next to the UL30Jt
-
the pictures don't really work when we just copy and paste the url either. it's annoying
-
The link works now & PHOTO FIXED!
The link worked before but opened you at the BOTTOM of the page and you needed to scroll up. Now it opens at the top of the page. Now just click on the blue Chinese-characters link for each photo. -
I am searching for a laptop mainly for Streaming videos. Do you think the ul30jt's i3-350UM can handle streaming? I am thinking of this as it would be for on the go use as well.
-
With the Nvidia card it should be no problem streaming videos, as long as you have a good fast Internet service.
-
it'll do that and much more... haha
-
so whose specs are right about the weight of the ul30jt? Amazon at 4.2lbs or xoticpc at 3.7lbs.
-
I'd say 3.7 lbs because the design and components are very similar to the UL30Vt and that's not 4 lbs.
Weights Listed:
ASUS: 4.18 lbs (8-cell) or 3.74 lbs (6-cell)
Amazon: 4.18 lbs (under technical details)
GenTech: 3.74 lbs
Xotic: 3.7 lbs
Take your pick! -
Do a lot of you guys use mice with your laptops? Would you recommend a smaller laptop sized mouse or is a regular sized one better? I was looking at the Logitech MX1100 at Best Buy on sale for $35. I don't know if getting a smaller laptop mouse would be better though. What do you guys recommend?
-
The Logitech Anywhere MX is $38.50 at Amazon at the moment. I think it is better for road warriors than the MX1100.
-
Only time I attach a mouse to my laptop is if I am gaming or doing some intense photo editing. With that said I enjoy using a touchpad.
-
I would think that the mouse size is utterly a personal choice. How can we recommend what is purely personal preference due to hand size and USB dongle size?
But if you want to know (!), I use the very-basic Microsoft 3000 wireless mouse ($20). I like its price & that it is smaller for portability. I felt the Logitech was too large (& too expensive) for my bag & hand.
I DON'T like the very large USB dongle it uses! If you have the money ($50-60!!), I like the tiny dongle of the Logitech Nano series, though I prefer the smaller mouse as well. Logitech seems to make their mice so big (to me) and $60 is a lot of money for a mouse!
And the only time I attach a mouse is for gaming. Other than that, my touchpad works very well .... and it's the MOST portable of all!
-
i have the anywhere MX mouse. its shape is a little odd for my hand, but it's because my hands are huge. i still like it though. i like logitech's drivers and how it lets you customize all the different buttons you might have (along with a battery power indicator). ironically enough, all the mice that don't work well with PCs are microsoft mice in my office, lol.
yeah, logitech is expensive, but i see it as an investment for your health and pleasure. i've developed back problems trying to crunch myself to use, type everything on a laptop, so when i'm at home, i have a workstation set up for mouse and keyboard and the laptop propped to the proper height.
oh yeah, the anywhere mouse also comes with a cool case
fyi, i'm proficient enough with a touchpad to play online RPGs. so i'm also a touchpad lover. -
Yep, personal and needs to match you life style. For airline use I recommend the MS 5000 BT mouse. Small, no dongle!, but eats batteries like candy. You should have the built in BT module or not worth it over RF mice.
-
You can play RPG's using the touchpad? I'm impressed.
I have two Microsoft 3000 wireless mice (wife & me) and they have worked flawlessly with Win 7. -
That's truly impression. My limited dexterity has restricted me to only basic mouse maneuvers with web browsing and word processing
I personally have one of the cheapest mouse in the market (Microsoft wired wheel optical) used exclusively on my UL30VT. It's a medium sized mouse which is still holding up strongly even after 5 years of abuse. -
I love wireless where I can get it, especially in my mouse. I shall never go back to a wired mouse. I'm ruined.
Speaking of ruined, I still remember when $1,600 was normal when it came time for me to buy a laptop. My, how times have changed. -
$1600 is actually still a relatively "normal" price for a laptop in most countries. I'd say we as Americans are all spoiled by the cheap computer systems and hardware available here. Even in Taiwan and mainland China where Asus's factories are located, their products are sold for a higher MSRP compared to the US. I remember 4-5 years ago I purchased a Toshiba Tecra in Hong Kong for a little over $2500 USD. I thought I was getting a fabulous deal given that I was haggling pretty aggressively and it was the cheapest price I could get among the hundreds of resellers in HK but when compared to the US, I feel completely ripped-off
-
LOL, I'm using one of those on my P6831. No batteries! ..and always connect.
While I'm not a MS mouse fan boy, I give top marks for the free service replacement available at the 1-800 number. I killed my last one playing Borderlands. -
Well lets see how things are now, the UL30JT is going for 7200 honkies right now on the street in HK, full warranty and everything. bloomberg tells me the fx rate is 7.77, thats ~927USD. Whats the UL30JT going for in the states right now?
-
Well If you are white people ( caucasian ) then most probably you were literaly ripped-off
-
$819 at GenTechPC.
-
But that one is a i3-330UM. The one of the one I see in HK is, and I quote:
"*13" *i5-520 2.40GHz *2GB * 500G 5400rpm
*NV GeForce 310M *8X S-M DL*802.11 b/g/nGigaLan" *6 CellBTWin7 PM64 (EN.CT.ST)"0.3M" -
8x would imply an 8x DVD RW Dual-layer drive. The UL30Jc here doesn't have an ODD. A full-speed i5-520M is impossible in the UL30Jt, that's why it's named UL for ULV. It has to have a UM processor.
The above looks more like the U45JC (or a 13' U35Jc with an ODD) w/ an i5-520M instead of the i3-370M.
THAT's the specs on a UL30Jt in Hong Kong? I'm confused.
-
6-cell battery? lol
the price difference between i3 and i5 in taiwan is minuscule. so don't expect the i3 in hk to be that much cheaper.
yeah, my first laptop was in 2004, toshiba sattelite M30 for $2000. tbh, it was a great laptop. a lot of people i know got it and were all very satisfied. i was able to rip two broken ones apart and put the working parts together to make a working one. fun little project
-
is there any asus 13inch laptop with backlit keyboard with good battery life??
i love UL30JT laptop just that,it doesnot have backlit keyboard damn.
i only wish i get a 13inch, light weight laptop with discrete graphic card, metal lid and deck(if possible) and backlit keyboard under 1000$.(that is why i feel macbook succeeds very often with students for their specs even though they have less ram and hdd space and not great graphic card but with killer design and aluminium build)
this ul30jc fits everything except backlit keyboard.why do manufacturers dont think about backlit keyboard so often.dell has 25$ upgrade to backlit keyboard.why cant asus do the same??? -
or here's a question: why DO you need a backlit keyboard? it adds complication to the hardware, sucks more battery life, and does absolutely nothing. your screen is often going to be bright enough for you to see your keyboard anyways, not to mention that you shouldn't be looking at your keyboard when you type anyways. you should know where your keys are...
anyways, that's just my rant. but if you feel so strong about a backlit keyboard and love the ul30 for its price and design, then get the ul30vt. there's a known mod that you can do to install a backlit keyboard yourself. it's on the top of the forum somewhere... too lazy to look it up
-
backlit keyboards are awesome.
-
Yea, I saw a 13" MBP in a coffee shop the other night with its very noticeable backlit keyboard ... it did look really classy & beautiful.
And Deacy, my screen in a dimly-lit room doesn't light my keyboard enough for me to type. And I'm not a touch typist. I tried, but just never learned. So there are people like me that would GLADLY have paid $25 extra for a backlit keyboard upgrade! And as e5cape said ... it looks really awesome! -
that exactly was my answer to deacy.the screen is not bright enough to light the keyboard.i have seen my friends trying to bend their screen towards the keyboard for ample light so that they can see the keyboard.everyone cant be touch typists.
i have looked into backlit keyboard mod but that is not switchable.i mean it cannot be on and offed when desired.it is always turned on when you turn on the laptop.that would be distracting while watching video or movies.is it possible to make backlit off when desired just like this??(its not asus though) YouTube - Dell E6400 Backlit Keyboard -
how about the keyboard that glows in dark, powering by the light of the screen. Backlit keyboard is against everything the UL series stand for, coz it wastes battery.
-
come on,i am fed up listening that backlit keyboard drains the battery.no one ll keep the backlit keyboard on when not in use like watching videos, movies and during day time with sufficient light.only during night, that too while surfing the net or chatting it ll be kept on.and btw the backlit keyboard draws an extra 1.5watts at max meaning battery ll be less by one hour if you get full 10hours normally without backlit on.
9hours with backlit keyboard is much much better than 10hours without backlit.and you can switch off when not in need.
i dont want anyone bragging about battery life now. -
its kinda useless mainly because most people probably don't need to look at their keyboard while typing... it does look cool, however
-
When I type in the dark, it hurts the performance when only getting illumination from the screen. with backlit keyboard you can be focused on the screen but still hit the right keys because your eyes sense the light from the corners of your eyes...
its as useful as any other light source. not dead important as your eyes can adjust to many things, and you could get far with a lighter and some candles.. its just damn convenient and nice.
and it just looks awesomely cool. backlit keyboard is something you should be able to turn of at will, with a quick ctrl + some buttons IMO.
