Hi Guys,
My nephew needs to buy thin and light laptop...He likes the asus ul30vt but all those talks about its bad screen and narrow viewing angle are worrying for me...though he is not technical user but still bad screen can be bothering to anyone?
Has acer timeline as3810t better than this? If someone used both let me know and also if someone can compare Macbook air's screen it would help...as I need to buy another light laptop for my parents...i was thinking of going for air...if its screen is much better?
Regards

Can any mod move this thread from owner's lounge subforum to main asus section?

I can't make any comparison with acer timeline as3810t nor with Macbook.
I just could say that, after a week of use, I'm very satisfied with my new UL30VT and quite satisfied with its display, too.
I know that I previously had a dull and dark matte screen on my old Acer, so I hadn't much direct experience on modern bright notebook screens and I'm not the best judge, but for sure I can't approve terms such as "horrible display" sometimes assigned to Asus Ul30VT screen.
Does it has a narrow vertical viewing angle? Yes, but not so much to deserve harsh words. For all tasks except movie viewing I've found it to be fully usable without any particular effort: find the best tilt angle and forget the issue.
When viewing movies, vertical angle (and horizontal too) is for sure much more critical and you have to adjust it perfectly to avoid color washing.
Likely is a bad display to be viewed by more than one people at the same time (eg. movie viewing) but for individual use I've found no real problems, especially for personal and professional use in Windows environment (browsing, email, programming, etc.).
Does it has bad blacks? Not at all, IMHO, if used mainly on Windows text and images. On movies things are much worse if display tilt angle is not correctly adjusted.
Is it crisp, bright and contrasted enough? Yes, absolutely.
I experienced a quite unsatisfying view only in "power saving" mode, when brightness and contrast are automatically set to quite low values. Good if you are low on battery, anyway.
In "balanced" mode display is good, in Power4Gear "Entertainment" mode is very good and in "High Performance" mode is almost too bright!
Only real issue for me is it's being glossy (I knew it before buying it, of course ...) but I found that if I don't have a light source directly behind me, when indoor, it's just a limited annoyance.
I suppose that outdoor things are much worse.
I'll decide later about buying a matte screen protector such as Viewguard or 3M Vikuiti ones, for now I can absolutely survive with UL30VT glossy screen in indoor use. -

Both the VT and the 3810 are in the process of being replaced by new models. Because of that, you can get them at decent prices. You can probably get a 3810T cheeper than the VT, but, unless you can find a "TG" version of the 3810, it will have no switchable graphics like the VT. I don't think you can get the TG in North America ATM but I could be wrong.
The UL30VT will give your nephew some graphics and gaming capability. I would go for one of them over the Acer (and if you look at my sig, you can see I am an Acer owner - so no anti-acer bias here).
