Hi,
I am helping out my sister with a problem with Asus UL50vt. Her machine is just over a year old but the battery has already lost a considerable amount of battery life. While battery capability do decrease over time, she said it's now able to hold only about an hours worth of charge. She ask the Best Buy where she purchased her machine, but they told her that the motherboard is probably bad and she should just buy a new computer (!?).
I suggested that she run the battery calibration in the BIOS, but when she press F2, she said she cannot find the battery calibration or power. I tried to read the UL50vt manual, but it does not appear to mention battery calibration. The support site is no help either. I don't live in the same state and can't look at her screen, can someone tell me the keyboard sequence required to get to the calibration?
Thanks.
Paul

Some models had a battery calibration option in the BIOS, but I don't think any do now. In a few models only certain BIOS versions had that option.
If you want to recalibrate the battery, you can let it run down to around 10% and then reboot and leave it in the BIOS setup menu (F2 at startup) until it shuts itself down. Then fully recharge the battery and it should give a more accurate reading.
Use a program like batterybar to get a reading of the wear level and capacity. Compare the numbers before and after the calibration. -
ClearSkies Well no, I'm still here..
Critical loss of battery life = bad motherboard ...... stunning (inaccurate) assessment from the BestBuy staff -- and yet not an atypical a level of expertise on their part.
If AuG's calibration hint doesn't improve things, and I suspect it may not, given the 80% drop in battery life the symptoms are either natural EOL for a 12-18 month battery (if she was draining it 2-3 times per week) or the battery has a bad cell inside. The solution to either of those is, sadly, purchase a new battery or live with the shortened time.
