In which state you are? I am in CA. Their earlier email stated that it will be ready on Dec 17 but got another email telling me today.

I picked it up but have not opened it yet. Planning to do that Wednesday night and will let you know.

What part of Cali are you at? I ordered mine on the 29th and haven't heard anything yet. I am hoping this laptop is not slow or buggy or I will have to bite the bullet and go with the fruit brand:-(
I am located in Sac and every store shows back ordered.

Is internet explorer 9 the only browser that supports swiping back and forth between pages? I've tried firefox and chrome and the back and forth gesture don't work.

The three finger swiping only works for internet explorer for me. What version of firefox do you have? I'm running 8.0.1. are you using an add on?

I'm using 8.0.1, too. Some add ons but nothing relevant for the gestures, I think (Downloadhelper, DownThemAll, FoxToPhone, Noscript, PasswordExporter).

It also works, e.g. in Windows-Explorer. I have an Elantech touchpad. What's yours?

I have played with ux31 today in Mediamarkt Austria and i did not buy it. Trackpad was just too unreliable. It was hopping and was difficult to select right button. Wireless was working ok. I have decided to wait little longer.

I was at best buy today with the goal of buying the z835, but the keys felt cheap and the hinges were wobbly. So that left me back at the ux31, which was sitting right next to it.

I'm definitely getting a ux31 with 128gb drive. While the trackpad did jump a little, I'm hoping new bios & drivers will bring that in line as the product ages a little. The hinges were tight and the whole thing felt upscale. I don't really understand the complaint about the missed keys while typing since I am a heavy typer. The 1600x900 resolution was amazing. The only thing that kept me from buying it was the fact they had none in stock.

Spoke with Squaretrade to confirm their warranty covers the Zenbook's internal battery, and decided to pull the trigger. Ordered a UX21E-DH71 from Amazon US, and it should be here by here in two days. Hoping I get lucky with the ADATA and touchpad.

Question to owners who are doing a fresh windows install: Can we just use the windows product key that is listed on the unit with a windows installation USB drive that I already have?

I think I know what changed in the 209 BIOS. I had a huge fight with Asus since one month because the AES-NI instruction in the processor was disabled by ASUS (and I needed it for my work). I asked for a refund etc, but they kept refusing, saying that the computer is fine. Actually, they didn't want to admit there was a problem, because I guess this problem is present in every ASUS laptop. Eventually, I went to consumer associations, etc.

I'm not sure if this new BIOS version is because of me, but anyway one of the change in version 209 is that now you can use AES hardware acceleration (you can see in CPU-Z for example that AES-NI becomes enabled when flashing to 209).

I wish newegg would stock the ux31-dh52, or best buy would get some in stock. I dunno that the extra $250 is really worth it for the 256gb drive in the dh53. At that point mind as well step up to the i7 as well.

Which one is recommended with the UX31, uninstall bloatware or fresh install? If fresh installing, then I would like to have full functional laptop as I noticed some users are complaining that some software are not being installed...etc. Also, any particular things to avoid when uninstalling or certain procedure to follow when fresh installing?

The bloatware isn't all that bad, I uninstalled several things but didn't spend too much time on it. I didn't notice many things that auto-run, so the bloatware is generally consuming disk space more than cpu and memory. Given the ease of uninstalling vs the potential headaches of a fresh install, I'd suggest taking the easy route, at least for a few weeks of use.

There's a sticky thread in this forum that describes the bloatware and what to keep, give it a look for details.

It's a lot more hassle to start from a fresh Win7 install. The bloatware isn't too bad on the Zenbook--just use uninstall or something like Revo Uninstaller to get rid of stuff you don't want.

Its not big of a hassle. Its takes about 8 mins to do a clean install of Win7 (from usb flash drive) Then all you have to do is install the softwares you want. Actually my UX31 feel much snappier after a clean install.

My UX31 was running 90 processes on boot, that is a TON of bloatware. It's much faster after a fresh install.

How many processes are you down to? I'm still using power4gear and the touchpad daemons. I don't know if it's worth keeping them. I have about 40 processes running.

Anyone experiencing a slower boot after a week's use? I booted to desktop in about 20 seconds the first week, now it takes a little over 30. I haven't changed anything. The only thing I do with this laptop is browse the internet and take notes in Word.

I would just make a backup somehow --

I heard when people took out certain programs from Asus, they started to get bluescreens because you need those programs to make the computer run correctly in certain batt modes.

Also, I seem to be running 90'ish processes as well. I don't know if they really slow anything down though, because my zenbook is still fast as ever.

I'm sporting 70 processes right now, but I think it was at 50-55ish after the clean install. I use it for programming and all of my stuff spawns a lot of lightweight processes so that's why it's so high. But still, it's better than 90 with nothing else installed. I kept Power4Gear, just in case, but I'm thinking only the ATKACPI is needed from the non-driver section.

If you left windows update on automatic that will do it. Boot time went from 10 to 18 seconds on a clean install after all the updates installed (approx numbers, I don't remember exactly anymore)

    Hey guys,

I've already made a thread asking on which laptop to buy, but currently I've set my mind on UX31. I'm probably going to buy it either later tomorrow or during week-end.

Just wanted to ask, as owners, would you recommend it? I'm a bit scared off by all the problems that people seem to have with the keyboard/touchpad/wifi.

Well, there doesn't seem to be another ultrabook with comparable specs.

I think for now, the Zenbook is the way to go if you're going to go the ultrabook route.

But definitely, Ivy Bridge will spice things up in the Ultrabook market.

Just for the record, I have absolutely no problems with keyboard/touchpad/wifi. I think it's a great notebook, well worth it.
You can always get something better if you wait, but the question is, do you need it now, or not?

It was either this or dell xps 14z. I'm leaning towards Asus.

That's good to hear. I guess there always are cases when people receive faulty products, it's just that it seemed to be all too common with ux31. It's good to know that it's not.

I made this comparison as well...

The 14z is more like a conventional laptop (somewhat portable desktop). At first it seems like you get more for your money....

It has more processing power but, without an SSD (which is an expensive upgrade on the Dell), the Zen is probably quicker for most things. Plus, the Dell display is inferior and I generally don't need to lug around an optical drive (which contributes to the Dell weighing ~50% more!).

The 14z certainly looks more portable than my 6.53 lb XPS16, but they've made compromises (like the display), and it's still not as portable as an ultrabook (which is more netbook-like). The 13" Zen is actually about the same weight as my old 10" EEE-PC.

The 14z is sort of in the middle-ground, which will appeal to some people, but I didn't want to compromise portability and display for the drives and processors.

Please dont tell us that you were thinking about xps 14z.......How the hell does Dell consider xps 14z as a ultrabook? IMHO its one of the ugliest looking notebook out there.

    Hello,

Has anyone noticed sluggishness when viewing youtube videos on their machine?

In particular, when I have a youtube video playing and I mouse over preview videos, the video that is currently playing experiences lag.

It doesn't appear to be a browser problem as I have tried on both Firefox and IE. I have the most recent version of flash and display driver as well.

Any assistance or guidance would be greatly appreciated, thank you in advance.

Hey guys. I received my UX21 today, and am doing a fresh install of Windows. I have a windows installation directory on a USB drive. How do I boot to the USB external Hard drive? When I press ESC at the Asus splash screen on bootup, it only shows the Adata primary disk as the sole boot option.

Go into the Bios (F2) and go to the boot tab. Change it from Adata to your usb flash drive, and then reboot.

    Exactly! I completely agree.

It does look awful, I give you that. But spec wise, it's not a bad choice.

I know this might be a bit too much to ask, but could anyone with UX31 check if they can run League Of Legends? I'd really love to be able to play that game with my friends, and it's the only game I'm actually interested in.

You don't have to install it (even thought that would be very much appreciated!), you could just run the test on Can You RUN It | Can I run that game | Game system requirements and report the results.

That would be very much appreciated!

    TPM support?
Last week I saw a flyer on campuslife.asus.com where the ux31 was advertised with win 7 pro and tpm support. This week the flyer is gone. When looking at the ux31 at Fry's I did see the TPM option in the BIOS.
My question to you guys who have puchased one, does it have TPM support? Have anyone used Bitlocker on one of these?

This thing is out of stock everywhere, and the few places that do seem to have it IMO are over priced.
