Greetings... I wanted to gather Windows 8 feedback, ideas, and troubleshooting concerning the UX31.

I install a fresh copy of Windows 8 Consumer Preview... Impressions so far have been that this is indeed a step in the right direction after using the Developer Preview on and off for a few months.

I have one issue so far:

    SM Controller
    USB2.0- CRW

    both can't find drivers.

Seems as though battery life is a wash - roughly the same.
Boot time is down about 18 sections to 9 Seconds - one of my favorite things about WIN8.

I haven't been following all the details of Win 8, but I haven't seen anything mentioned about a significant re-architecture of the driver model. So my first guess would be that Win 7 drivers should be usable, even if they aren't optimal.

But I'm thinking of upgrading my UX31 to Win 8 later this year, so I'm very interested in hearing the results of your experiment. Keep us informed as you go.

How about sleep restore times? Can you still achieve the 2 second restore without the all the Asus power management modifications (unless those are carried over?).

Touchpad working fine? (and do you have Elantech or Sentelic?)

    Hello

Can not install ux 31vga drivers...does not meet minimum requirements for installing the software...

I think the native win drivers are not so good, graphics is slow...

I have 3 main qualms with win 8 on my ux31.
    1. vga drivers not installing as ma7ija has said.
    2. I cannot get bluetooth working. The symbol appears in the system tray, but I cannot connect to anything. Anyone else experiencing this?
    3. I cannot connect to my university's wifi (WPA2-enterprise). The authentication fails during the process. It connects fine to my home WPA2-personal network, as well as unsecured networks though. I'm not sure if this is a driver thing or a win 8 thing.

I am still getting 2 second wake times without all of Asus' power management crap. My elantech touchpad seems to work just as fine as it did in win 7.

Ok just installed Windows 8 CP (upgrade over stock Win 7 install).

For the drivers, "SM Controller" will be covered by the Intel chipset drivers, and "USB2.0- CRW" is the Realtek card reader.

Main issue I have right now is the Sentelic driver is not installing, so the touchpad is pretty poor right now (no scroll, etc.).

Ahh... That helped. All the drivers are installed. I also noticed that my SSD performance (Sandisk) seems much faster. I haven't verified this with any benchmarking test.. my windows score jumped from 5.9 to 7.5 for Hard drive performance however.

Yep noticed the same with my Sandisk. In ATTO, low-speed writes are a heck of a lot better- the 0.5 KB test (which was giving a miserable 98 kB/s) is now 60x faster (6.3 MB/s- still not great, but much more workable), and I haven't had any lockups yet. :D Combo of improved SSD performance + OS being lighter means the system is a lot snappier than before.

Were you able to load the touchpad driver (/do you have Elantech or Sentelic?). Sentelic driver still won't install here - modded the INF for NT version number, but it seems it's just not detecting the hardware.

I ended up getting the bluetooth working properly with the driver on Asus' site. I just had to make sure both the run in compatibility mode and run as an administrator boxes were checked. For some reason I didn't check the admin box before (doh!).

So far I am liking win 8, just wish we had vga drivers, and that I could connect to a wpa2-enterprise network.

There is a way to load the Intel display drivers-- will test it later today and post my results. On the WPA2 bit, not sure what's up- works fine on my WPA2-Personal networks.

Is everyone running without touchpad drivers?

I tried using the graphics drivers from intel's website as well and it gets a little further in the process but eventually fails, so if your solution ends up working that would be great news.

I can also connect to WPA2-personal just fine, the enterprise version is what is messing up.

For those trying to install Sentelic drivers:

    1. Download the Sentelic Drivers from the Asus Website.
    2. Extract contents.
    3. Run either "DPInst32.exe" (32 bit) or "DPIst64.exe" (64bit) to install drivers.
    4. Restart.
    5. Go to "C:\Program Files\FSP"
    6. Run "FspUip.exe"
    7. Go to the notification area on the taskbar (bottom right corner) and expand so you can see the "Finger Sensing Pad" icon.
    8. Right click the icon and press settings.
    9. Change settings and done!

The mouse settings in the control panel will not show the FSP settings, so you have to use the notification instead.

For those that are trying to install Intel VGA drivers:

    1. I gave up and used the drivers included in windows -> Intel HD Graphics Family (Microsoft Corporation - WDDM 1.2)

As for the Asus UX31 running Win8? Fast but crashes more than I want too...
I seem to have random crashes after restoring the laptop from sleep. Hibernation works fine though.

I can get 9 secs from cold boot. And that's to the start menu, not just to the login screen.

It's around <1s from sleep and between 2~3s from hibernate. IT IS FAST!!!

I have the Elantech Touchpad and it is frankly working fantastic... Really nice and quick. Love it that the three finger swipe pulls up the multitasking window on the left.

Mine's coming back fine from sleep, on Sandisk. Cold boot speeds aren't that fast, though.

I've had a few OS-related glitches so far (e.g. got stuck in some Metro screens, mouse moving, but no way to get out- had to manually restart), but nothing too terrible.

So what kind of "Primary hard disk" scores is everyone getting? With my sandisk I was at 5.9 in win 7, but now I'm at 7.5 in win 8, with my lowest score being graphics at 5.4.

All of my scores are exactly the same except for the Graphics, which is at 5.4 versus your 5.8. What graphics driver do you have installed?

Anyone else noticing flaky wifi performance? Sometimes it stays connected for several hours without a hitch, other times it's getting kicked off every couple minutes. This never happened to me in windows 7. In fact, my android phone, sitting right next to the laptop doesn't have issues with getting disconnected at all.

Yeah the Wifi's quite flaky. Disconnects by itself sometimes (happened in Win7 too, but more often here), and about an hour ago, it basically just stopped working. Toggled the keyboard Wifi switch, disabled and enabled in control pane, etc., but couldn't see anything. Finally ran the troubleshooter, and somehow it said the card was disabled (even though it showed up as enabled both on the keyboard and in the control panel adapter settings), so enabled and soon thereafter, it found the network again.

I was reading in another win 8 forum that it sometimes has issues with waking the hardware back up after idling. I have turned off windows ability to put my wifi chip to sleep to save power, so I will report back after I have time to test it out and see if it fixes the problem. It will eat a little more battery, but it'd be worth it if I didn't have to deal with the flaky wifi.

    good afternoon,

I have the CP of windows 8 installed and running, got all of the drivers installed that were relevant (bluetooth, touchpad, cardreader, chipset, sound, ATK).

the only thing that I can see that is not working at the moment is the FN key. the FN key works for suspend (which i think is a global windows hot key) but does not work for anything else (volume control included).

is anyone else having the same problem or, are all of your hotkeys working fine on the UX31e.

    thanks in advance

    Dan.

Everything seems to be working fine on mine but the bluetooth.(AR3100/3200) I have tried several downloads and the one from tje website - win 7 64bit seems to spin for 1 second and then nothing. I tried running as admin and no luck. Any help would be appreciated.

This is the full win 8 pro release, msdn site has it up about a month before release. Honestly it seems exactly like the preview version. I am going to try the new drivers off from Intel's website for windows 8 tonight, cause in Photoshop CS6 it does say GFX is not supported.

I have a problem with the touchpad drivers, what are people here using? there doesn't seem to be a new version of the Sentelic driver, I've tried Elantech too but still no good. I have very basic options only, no three finger gestures at all - It all worked fine in windows 7
