I recently bought an Asus UX31a from bestbuy and upon returning home, I reformed the hard drive. After 4 days, while I was simply browsing the internet, the laptop just shutdown without blue screen or notification of error. The laptop immediately restarted and the only indication of unexpected error was that the laptop asked if I wanted to start windows safemode or normally. I was wondering if this is a common problem with the UX31a or Asus in general, and if there was a fix for this. Any and all help is welcome. Thanks!

Yep. I had this happen as well (only once though). I included this little gem of information in my Amazon review and someone from Asus posted saying I can email Asus for a replacement.

I've also read several others on here (which is a tiny sample size of all users) who had the exact same issue. It just shuts down instantly with zero warning. Very concerning as I need a machine I can depend on for actual work that matters. If I lose my document I've been working on for a few hours, that is a serious no-go.

I think I'm just going to keep the Lenovo X230 tablet I ordered, but planned on keeping. I will miss this beautiful screen, but cannot risk a sudden, random shutdown at the worst possible moment. It's not good.

I'd venture to guess this issue is bigger than it appears right now. Tip of the iceberg and all. Time will tell but I have doubts about the longevity of this machine. It's a shame because the screen is so beautiful.

ah I think I read your review hotsauce... I will be using this laptop for test taking so there is no way that I can have it randomly shut down (it has only happened once so far but it is definitely worrying!) I don't know if there is anyway for me to fx it or make sure that it doesn't happen again =/

I kinda don't want to return it since I have had the laptop for less than a week and this one doesn't have so much blacklight bleed...

Haha, yeah I put it in my review on Amazon (under Debt Free). Mine has only done it once so far, but I've never in my life owned a computer that did this, so once is too many. I'm just waiting on it to happen again. I think there is a manufacturing flaw or something because if it was software, everyone's should do it.

It's worrisome to me. No telling what will be the case three years from now.

Thanks hotsauce! I went back to your review and read what the Asus rep said and decided to return that computer to Best Buy. The new one I got had the ADATA harddrive which is nice (my other one had the scandisk one) so I just hope that there are no more unexpected shutdowns this time (or I am gonna return it for the samsung 9)

I had this issue, but I only had one shutdown in 10 days of using it. Asus recommended updating the audio drivers with the most recent straight from Realtek. I somehow doubt sound drivers are the cause of the random shutdowns, but I would give it a try. I ended up just exchanging mine since it had major bleed issues anyways.
