I disabled the ambient light sensor, but notice my display brightness automatically darkens and brightens on its own when running on battery despite keeping the adapative brightness setting OFF in the Power Options Plan Settings in Windows 7 Pro. The display screen changing brightness on its own and is very annoying. This UX32VD also has a fresh Windows 7 install with latest Microsoft updates + latest Asus drivers.

Has anyone else ever experienced this varying display brightness problem?

I have not because I never let these things work in the first place. I don't let my phone or anything. While I can't comment on your situation as I said I don't let my phone do. When I did I had the same kind of issues you mention. A shadow could throw it all off couldn't it?

Alright you said you disabled all. Did you go in power4gear and Windows.

since I performed a clean install, there is no more Power4Gear software. No bloatware, etc.

    You could try this:
I don't know if the menus are named exactly the same in English, I have a Norwegian OS and just translated the menus to English.

Go to the Intel graphics control panel, choose advanced mode, choose the power tab. Under power source choose on battery, and untick the power saving option.

    Ragwo,

I checked my intel graphics settings and they're all set to maximum performance....this is really annoying to use this computer on battery now...argh!

Had the same issue. I disabled the sensor process as well. I'm not sure of the conditions but I'll try to note when it happens again as it's intermittent. I upgraded memory to 10 and installed SSD (new Samsung Pro).

I paid more attention to it and it's also automatically changing the CONTRAST of the screen, not just brightness. Does anyone know how to fix this on a fresh clean install of Windows 7 x64?

Try uninstalling the monitor driver ( not the display adapter driver, the monitor driver) from device manager, and allow Windows to reinstall the default driver. I've been hearing of some problems with the OSD and automatic adjustments despite users troubleshooting, and this has fixed it in a few scenarios. I hope it helps you too!

Did you happen to notice this before doing your Asus updates, dejacky? I know you said you disabled the ambient light sensor, but it sounds like that is still your problem (that or a power setting for the LCD).

It wasn't doing this before updates. The problem is I don't remember which caused it, ala Windows updates or Asus Updates. Thanks for everone's input so far....still searching for a solution.

What occurs is if I'm not typing or using the touchpad for a few seconds, the brightness / contrast tends to get dimmer and it sometimes it has a "washed out" look during the transitions. If I start typing or use the touchpad, the brightness appears to return to normal, but the contrast setting still varies for a moment.

Well this certainly sounds like a power plan issue. Although the screen should not looked "washed out". Double check your power options in Windows Control Panel, and if you use Power4Gear, check those settings as well (or disable them overwriting the Windows power settings).

I looked in the power features and set the Intel Graphics Power Plan and set both settings to Maximum Performance and so far so good, no more auto-dimming / change in contrast. Thanks! :)

OMG please help this is driving me insane!

I have a UX303ln. Totally clean Win 8.1 pro install. No ASUS drivers even installed. Just chip-set and thermal framework.
Power management set to max and all brightness settings at 100% ( adaptive brightness off)
Intel graphics set to maximum performance.

Best way to see problem is to launch Photoshop or illustrator as they have very dark backgrounds, screen dims in several increments as I move cursor around.
When I open the open file dialog when is bright white, screen does reverse! It brightens in 3 or 4 increments AS I MOVE CURSOR.

Took me forever to find the Fn A. But when I disabled light sensor, the changes became less drastic, but are still there. As someone mentioned, the contrast is still changing.

So with the sensor off the change is less pronounced and annoying, but it is still there and kind of driving me nuts.

    Any ideas?

One thing i noticed is that someone said they changed BOTH setting on INTEL power. I only found one.

To fix the problem you need to turn off both adaptive brightness and go into intel graphics properties and change the power settings as previously mentioned by several posters. I've attached a picture highlighting how your intel graphics properties should look like. The main thing that did the trick for me was disabling "Display power saving technology"
