Hey all,
After spending days reading reviews for a nice ultrabook I went with the Zenbook Prime UX42VD with i7 and HD display. All the reviews on Amazon were loving it and it has dedicated GFX and upgradeable RAM and SSD.
Lovely bit of kit, great spec, AMAZING screen and beautiful looks...but with a serious flaw. Not sure if this is just mine, or if it is common, but it is going back tomorrow because of it.
Basically the slightest bit of pressure on the metal around the trackpad (you know where you you would rest your wrists when using the machine) and the track pad buttons stick down until the pressure is removed after which they release. This makes the laptop pretty much unuseable with the trackpad.
Also when using the trackpad the cursor seems to stick sometimes too. I read this is common on the UX31, but not the 32.
Also there seems to be a lot of static electricity flowing from the machine into my body from the metal casing. I can feel it when I run my fingers over the casing. Surely this isn't good.
Anyone else having problems with this machine or is it a one off?
I was actually a bit annoyed when I opened the box and the 'Intel' 'nvidea' and 'ultrabook' stickers were all wonky. I know it isnt important, and I'd remove them anyway, but after all that has gone into making such a beautiful ultrabook like this they cant even stick the final stickers on straight. Just seems sloppy to me.
Can anyone recommend any decent alternatives as I may trade it for something else yet. I was thinking the Lenovo Yoga 13 (although I would like orange and they don't have it here yet in Singapore). The Acer M series with touch seems nice. Not as thin or nice looking or has a HD display but seems a decent spec and has a dedicated GFX card which I would like. I also want the abiity to up the ram too so has to have a ram slot.
Acer S7 looks alright but a big tacky looking. Lenovo X1 Carbon non upgradeable and expensive. Sony not that keen on and twice as much money for the same spec as the UX32.
Cheers for any help!

In any laptop, I'm never impressed with nor fond of the trackpad. It sounds like yours is a bit out of whack; could just a bad driver or firmware. The metal casing is safe as far as static goes. Metal is an ideal conductor for electricity, so you're probably bound to feel something, but since you're touching metal, the static is unlikely to transfer to you or cause any sparks upon contact.
Hopefully you get some enjoyment out of the Asus, but if you exchange it, let us know how you like the replacement!
