Asus UX430 which 512gb m.2 or larger are supported

Dear friends,

I heard (also from Asus) that not all m.2 2280 drives will work on the UX430. One shop even told me that a m.2 2280 drive larger then 512gb will not work, is this true?

Can someone tell me if this one will work: Crucial MX300 m.2 525GB?

And it would be great if people in here can tell me which 512gb and larger m.2 drives they tested and will 100% work on the UX430. Here's a list of m.2 drives that does NOT work on the ux430:

It appears that you will need an SATA3 drive, not a PCIe drive. I'm pretty sure that the Crucial MX300 is an SATA drive. I don't believe that there should be any capacity restrictions.

How sure are you that the first two options that you mention are not compatible? They appear to be SATA drives as well.

 

Sorry but you don't really get it.

I need a SSD drive with a m.2 connector, that's the only option for this laptop, it doesn't matter if it is a m.2 nvme ssd or m.2 on sata3 speeds, some work others don't, see the list. There are some nvme m.2 drives that work, but they are 256gb and I need 512gb or more.

The list is from Asus, so I'm pretty sure they won't work

 

If the stock drive is a SATA3 M.2 drive and M.2 PCIe drives are also said to work (some motherboards will not support both types), then I can't think of any general reason that would stop higher capacity drives from being compatible.

Does Asus have a list of drives that do work rather than just ones that don't work? I'd say just start from there and look into the higher capacity models.

 

There are two (2) types of M.2, one uses SATA signal and other uses NVMe (PCIe) signal.
For your UX430, you can go with Crucial MX300 m.2 525GB because it's M.2 SATA.
Based on the list you've provided, only these can work with the system.

Also, based on what ASUS provided in their spec page which shows that it can handle M.2 SATA3 SSD.

@namaiki : yes Asus also has a list of working m.2 drives, but unfortuately it are drive from 128gb till 256gb :-(

@Kevin@GenTechPC: sorry, but did you really read this topic? A: you give me information I already know B: no the 2 drives you mention wont work, please read ...

 

There's no limitation on capacity.
These two SSD are SATA signal so they should work fine. Did you test these drives? And how did you determine that they didn't work?

 

@Brian69 Could you please post your complete list of all drives that supposedly do and don't work so we can at least have that information at hand?

this is the latest one (don't look at the red, they are still testing those) ... there is now 1 512gb drive on the list, but that one is WAY to expensive ... but I decided to go with a 1TB drive and want to buy a 1TB Samsung 850 evo m.2 (sata3) but don't know if it will work. Maybe you can tell when you see the list? But how do you know there is no limitation? I heard from a lot of people (working in pc webshops) some laptops have a 512gb limit ... and why didnt Asus tested a 1TB drive yet?

 

Did ASUS say that any UX430 can support both types (SATA & PCIe) of SSD? Or it's just one over the other? Normally they will only support one type unless they make revision.

 

Again the answer is in the list ... so yes both types ... it's not gonna work in here I'm afraid

 

Sorry that we can't answer your questions since we don't have such unit on hand to test, and ASUS can change their spec without notice this is why there's no firm answer unless you actually test a SSD directly to find out the result. Let's wait for others who had installed any SSD here to share their experience.

I can share experience with my new Asus UX430UN i8550u . It works well with Samsung EVO 960 500GB. Sequential Read/Write speed about 1600MBps/1400 MBps, seems same 2 lane PCIe setup on m.2 connector than at older UX430UQ, UX430UA models.

The replacement (cloning) was not easy at least for me to a slow USB HDD and from USB HDD to new SSD + fix MBR with a bootable Win10 install USB. Cloning seems much more easy and fast with an m.2->USB converter from aliexpress and do cloning directly to the target Samsung SSD via USB.

 

UX430UN 1TB Samsung Evo 850 M.2 works fine.

 

Pretty much any of NVMe SSD will work in there, it comes down to personal preference.
