Recently got a used Asus laptop for christmas, although it's a nice machine, it has few problems which hopefully I can rectify without taking it to a repair shop.Firstly, when the charger isn't connected it barely lasts longer than half an hour .. the battery appears to have plenty of charge, but the laptop itself shuts off unexpectedly without warning. Also, when connected, I have to fiddle with the charge port as the laptop constantly flicks between charging / not charging (ac mode/battery mode icon pops up and disappears until I fiddle with the charger).
Secondly, there were a ton of registry problems when I first obtained the machine - as well as a single trojan horse which I got rid of. I used a free program (Glary Utilities) to rid myself of these problems, which has worked well ... but new registry problems appear everyday. Not entirely sure how registry problems affect performance, but just thought I'd mention.
Running Windows 7 64 bit, comes with 4g of RAM of which only 3g is being utilised. On the windows experience index it's surprisingly similar to my old desktop (which I payed 40 pounds for ....) which is running the same OP but every component is older (duel core pentium D, 1g of ram, 80g sata drive). Infact some of the scores are actually lower than my desktop (for example CPU, HD .. Ram score is only 0.3 points above desktop)

If you need the index scores just let me know, I'll also try to answer any technical questions with as much detail as I can. I hope someone can help, thanks for reading.

If the registry problems are actually a "problem" - in that they're causing instability or poor performance - then I would recommend re-installing the operating system. That Trojan may not have been removed properly and left damage behind in it's wake.
As for the battery and charger, both may need to be replaced. You can use software to determine the battery wear level, such as Battery Care. As for the adapter, either there is bad contact due to a kink in the wiring, or the DC jack on the laptop could be faulty. Best way to determine this is to try using a compatible adapter and see if the problem can be recreated.
