Forgive me if the answer to this is buried somewhere but a general keywords search didn't uncover it, so...
I am about to get a V1 and a docking station. I will be playing FPS's when the V1 is attached to the docking station. I was wondering if anyone thinks I need a cooling pad as well and if there is one that works with the docking station. I don't mind buying one if I need to but don't want one that isn't compatabile. Any thoughts gratefully received.
Many thanks,
Rc

If you have a cooling pad with it it might still work. The fact that it is up off the desk a little bit while on the dock will definitely help promote airflow. The real question is how covered the fan is. It doesn't make sense that it would be completely covered. if it isn't any cooling pad that would work without the cooling pad would be ok. I would give it a try without the cooling pad, then decide if you want it to be cooler.

I have the V1/V2 docking station here, while it does prop up the unit and has designated "vents" on the base as described in the manual, the temperature difference from the docking station seems negligible when compressing videos (hovering around 70C with or without). Leaving the system running for a while hovering at 50C, then running 3DMark 2006 one full cycle on the dock causes the CPU fan to kick into high-speed mode somewhere near the end when it does the snowfield test (seemed to be about 77C before that test, so probably hit 80C in the middle of that test). Going to see if adding a fan behind the dock or getting one of those laptop coolers helps.
What they need for this thing is an extendable heatsink that goes outside of the unit for enthusiasts. -
I look forward to hearing your report AlexF, when you get the cooler. Also what actual temperature is it that I should start worrying if my laptop reaches it? Thanks,

Hey, digging this thread out from way back.
How much of practical cooling effect does the docking station have on the V1? -

Yeah, it wasn't enough to be even worth considering as a selling point. The vents simply don't have enough volume to support the extra intake. The only thing the cooling pad will do is guarantee a constant flow of cooler air (rather than letting warm air saturate under the unit), but it will inevitably still reach the point where the system eventually throttles itself.

I have to say something must be working because my core temp is never more than 51 degreess even when I'm gaming (BF2) and I only have the Power4Gear set to Quite Office. Idling or surfing - and all this is WITH the docking station attached - I'm running at 33 degrees (HD Tune figures)...so I'm happy with the docking station for cooling purposes but even happier with the number of USB ports it adds
