i bought a v1jp at the start of 2007 when Vista first came out, i gave it to my mum as a work computer and all she over does on it is browse the net, write emails and look at the stock markets.

recently there is this strange overheating problem going on with the laptop, every once in awhile the laptop will over heat so badly that it will shut itself down. i flip it around and the bottom of the computer is so hot you literally cannot put your hand on it for more than a few seconds. i have to let it sit for about 5 mins to cool off and turn it back on again. this doesnt happen often maybe once every few days sometimes once a week but it is getting annoying and i think if not treated this can cause damage.

my question is does the warranty cover this issue? i cant really show the techs whats wrong with the laptop because the problem is random and they will have to keep using it until this problem occurs.

    thanx in advance

There's probably not an easy answer to your question, but consult with a service rep over at ASUS wouldn't hurt and see how they would try to help you with this overheating issue. Give them a ring on their 24/7 notebook hotline at 1-888-678-3688. You should also check out the notebook clearning guides available on here, that might solve your problem.

Check the fan vents first - if they've never been cleaned, depending on the environment your mother uses it in, they could be clogged which would explain the symptoms she's having.

Vista drills the GPU more. Under XP, the 3D core is not doing a whole lot and PowerPlay reduces it to half speed. Under Vista, it's constantly running, so I don't think it would really have an opportunity to slow down. I would load a program like NHC and check the temperatures.

As ClearSkies has indicated, dust accumulation will be dependent on the environment it has been used in. Also, if it is operated in an environment where it tends to be humid, the dust will tend to cake together and obstruct the air flow a lot more quickly. Operating in a bedroom environment, carpeted environment, having pets, smoking and other environmental factors can also serve to cause it to clog up more quickly.

Also, if the temperature and humidity outside went up, you can also expect something like that. We just had a change to summer weather last week and it's a lot more humid. My laptop usually idles around 50C but it just out of the blue now idles at 60C under the same pattern of usage (but it is a hell of a lot more humid in here now...)
