    Hi,
I have big problem with my DVD drive in Asus V1S notebook.
I can't open most of my CD's and DVD's! When I putting CD (or DVD) to drive I can't see data which were burned on it. Mostly this problem appears on original CD/DVD. When I trying to explore drive, Vista is asking me for name for new CD…

    I have:
    HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T20L ATA Device
    Firmware Revision: NR02
    Notebook Asus V1S-AS008E (BIOS 3.00)

Somebody has got the same problem?
Maybe I need new firmware but I can’t find it in internet.
    Please help me :(

    Hi,

    1. Try disabling UAC (User Access Control) in Vista. It is known to sometimes cause this type of problems with some ODDs.
    2. Try removing the device driver, and refreshing/rebooting so that it is reinstalled.
    3. As you say, firmware upgrade.
    4. Different type of media (something mid-high-quality like Verbatim or TDK, for instance; no TrashData -- uh, I mean, TraxData :D). Sometimes notebook ODDs are picky about what media they like.

have u tried checking device manager to see if the driver is enabled? if it is try disabling it, reboot ur comp and enable again, if this doest help u can try this.

    Follow this steps:

NOTE: After removing these registry keys and rebooting, it may be necessary to reinstall any CD or DVD recording applications.

    1) Close all open programs

    2) Click on Start, Run, and type REGEDIT and press Enter

    3) Click on the plus signs (+) next to the following folders

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
    SYSTEM
    CurrentControlSet
    Control
    Class
    {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

    4) This folder is the DVD/CD-ROM Drive Class Description in the registry. Look for any of the following names in the right hand column.

    UpperFilters
    LowerFilters
    UpperFilters.bak
    LowerFilters.bak

    5) If any of the above keys shown in step 4 are listed, right-click on them and choose Delete

    6) After deleting the keys, close the Registry Editor

    7) Reboot your computer

    8) Open My Computer and check to see if your CD or DVD drives have returned. You may also want to open Device Manager and verify that the yellow exclamation and error code on the CD or DVD drive is gone.

I don;t know about the firmware upgrade...

If all else fails, try to arrange a replacement from warranty for the ODD only (such that you can continue using the laptop in the meantime)

But I don't have yellow exclamation :( I have problem with reading and auto starting. To open CD I must click right mouse button and choose "explore"

In Poland is not possible.. I must send computer :/

I notice that when I'm taking out CD, Name and size of CD is still visible in My computer :/
When I'm putting another CD I still see name and size of previously CD.

Try removing the filters as well, as suggested by rulebreaker. I know that solved an ODD-related problem a while ago. Some software had messed up with the filters, I think it was Apple software, perhaps iTunes.
