Hi folks,
I'm almost ready to order Asus V6V, but I'm a little worried about the fan noise based on some comments of other users. How bad is it really ? How noisy is it comparing to other brand of notebooks or other Asus notebooks? Should I worry about it or just go ahead and order it ?
Thanks,
Mike

I have had one for 4 days (sic) and I remember it silent. A little shhhhhh. Watching TV and surfing @home with V6 unplugged (proc get down to +-800 Mhz to save energy), V6 almost silent. (IMHO, thats how I remember it... RIP[V])

Mine was noisy, compared to most Notebooks I have used. But I think the perception of noise is very subjective. I would recommend you going somewhere to have a first hand look (listen).

You thought it was noisy? You probably never owned a centrino unit before. Celerons were always pretty quite. Tho this is not a celeron. ANyone else think the v6v is almost silent by comparison?

This is a good question for one seriously unbiased source...... abaxtor.... he reviewed the V6 for Notebook Review and I don't think he mentioned it in his review here, but he could certainly comment.
I wouldn't say silent either by any means.... just like the W3, the V6 has a highend cpu and graphics card in the systwem that is cooled by one fan and heatpipe... The V6 is a little louder because the fan is thinner (becasue the system is so thin and thinner than even the W3), so its fan has to be slightly different to remove the same heat the W3 does, or even the Z70v does..... The angle of the fins, amount of fins, rpms have to be different. This difference means for more fan activity to get rid of the heat. Silent, no. Normal for a system that is so skinny that most companies would put a lowend cpu and integrated graphics in to........ but ended up with a highend cpu and a nice dedicated graphics setup... yes, certainly.
It's all about performance and the heat that comes from it...... When you throw the need for a light and thin system into the mix, you've got to deal with something.... in this case it's more fan activity.
Thanks,
Justin

Thanks guys !!
I absolutely thought so. I read 3 major reviews and nobody mentioned it was a noisy notebook, and I believe these people know what they are talking about as they review many units. I just saw couple of contradictory posts saying it was "really noisy" so it got me confused....
Anyway, thanks for clearing it up, I'm going for V6!!!!!!

I don't think you can call it one way or the other and based on reviews the reviewer is going to mention it based on what else they've been used to. It's pretty much up on the air and the only thing we really could do is get DB ratings on the fans and people would make up their own mind.
Thanks,
Justin

Hi Mograph
I've had my V6 for about three months now and still very happy. The fan really doesn't bother me at all as I work with music on most of the time. When it turns on depends on the power4gear settings that you have on. If you have her set flat out in super performance the fan comes on right away at 1400 rpms and soon steps up t0 17 rpms if you put any real strain through your cpu.
However if you set it on game mode the cpu steps down to 800 MHz unless it needs to run higher reducing the heat out put. My V6 usually runs well below 50 deg C (122 F) and the fan rarely goes over 1400 rpms.
On batteries (also set to game mode) the results are even better with the fan offen off all together although this is dependent on ambient temps.
So fan off = no noise besides hard dive if you lessen real hard
1400 rpms = whisper
1700 rpm = air conditioner running in the back ground, noticable but not "loud". The DVDdrive/burner is far louder!
One interesting thing that I was not expecting is that the right plam rest does tend to get warm as the system heats up. When I say warm I mean about 40 deg C. This is because the body is made of Aloy and conducts temp real well. Its interesting but not a terrible thing. Great on a cool day [] Generally I don't leave my wrist on there for extended periods and when I do it is not "HOT" its warm. I tend to type with my wrists off the plamrest anyway
Cheers and I hope this helps -

Hi, I am new here and only have limited experience with the laptop. Hope my comments still bear some weights.
I have V6V for a few weeks and I am still happy with this real nice-looking laptop. So far, I used this laptop plugged most of the time so I can only share with the fan condition with AC on. When plugged in, V6V seems to have two fan speeds (1400/1700) and never completely off. I think when the CPU temperature is lower than around 55C the fan still stay at 1400 which is quite very quiet and not noticeable at all. However, the noise volume does rise significantly (compared to 1400) when it's at 1700. It's not really noisy but it's definitely noticeable in a quiet room (pherhaps close to the sound of a quiet desktop PSU). If it's used in a room with some level of ambient sound at 1700rpm, then the noise is no longer noticeable.
Of course, when talked about noise volume, one should also look at the temperature of the laptop. Before I discover that 'super/high performance' setting doesn't use dynamic switching and I used that setting, my V6V stays roughly around 55-57C when lightly used/idle (ambient temp at 20C+). When moderately stressed, the temperature rises to above 60C. However, I have yet to heavily stress my V6 so I couldn't tell you about that. All the above temperature condition makes fan stays at the louder 1700rpm.
Since I found out about how to make V6 operating in dynamically switching ('game' setting or Centrino Hardware Control), the lightly used/idle temp will stay below 50C which makes fan operating at 1400 which is quite very quiet.
I was a bit surprised to find out the 'right-wrist warmer' behaviour as well. But then I got used to it. To me, it's not that big of a deal as it's not that hot enough to cause any serious concern or discomfort. However, it does get noticeably warm when the CPU temperature is higher (I think the upper right wrist rest is the location of CPU. Is that right?).
I hope this is informative enough. -

im not sure if its just me but 60 degree C seems to be rather hot. Is the V6V uncomfortable to hold on your lap at that temperature? I was veering away from the W3V (unfortunate because i like it otherwise) because of all the complaints about heat and issues about the screen, I hope the V6V isnt the same.

Well... it's really not for a 5400rpm hard drive that's cranking away.... maybe for a 4200rpm drive it would be hot, but it's quite normal for a faster drive.
I'm not saying it shouldn't bother you or anything... but it's normal for the drive.
Thanks,
Justin

Interestingly the only part on the bottom that get really warm is right in the middle, so it can sit on your lap no problems as there is still plenty of air flow.
If you want to sit it on your chest it might get a bit warm []
