Hi, I'm new to this forum. I hope there are some knowledgeable users that can help me out here.

I just received an Asus V6800V notebook last Thursday. When I receive a machine from an OEM I usually go about trimming Windows' services and startup applications to free up memory. I also use nLite to reduce the size of my Windows installation.

Upon receiving my computer I went to the task manager and was shocked at the number of non-Microsoft services running on my machine. Intel Proset had three services by itself, each using 7+ MB of RAM. So I began disabling startup items, deleting registry keys, and disabling services. I was left with a functional but not fully functional computer. None of the hardware buttons worked, no power management, no sleep mode, all I could really do was increase or decrease the display brightness.

I decided that since I had butchered the machine enough it was time to reinstall Windows - which I did without incident. Upon restarting nothing worked which is what I had expected. I'm slowly reinstalling all the Asus junk to get things working again.

    So far:

ATK0100 ACPI utility (seems to be for the hardware buttons and corresponding on-screen display)
    Power4 Gear
    ASUS Probe

Drivers are installed for everything except bluetooth and there are no big yellow question marks in Device Manager.

One thing that is making me crazy is failure to come out of sleep mode. When I hit a key on the keyboard to bring the machine back up, I hear the fans come on, the hard drive spins up, the LED's come on but the LCD doesn't do anything. The hard drive activity light stays on for nearly a minute and then goes out. The only way to restore the machine at this point is to hold down the power button and pray.

Is there some utility/service/driver that I'm missing here? I haven't installed the Proset utility or the wireless console as I don't need them. Are these necessary for STR? I really, really don't want to install them if I don't have to. I also would like to enable bluetooth down the road but sleep mode needs to be fixed first.

    Thanks.

I should also mention that the only peculiar thing I have in the Event Log is :

    <blockquote id='quote'> quote:<hr height='1' noshade id='quote'>Source: i8042prt
    Type: Warning
    Event ID: 17
Description: The device sent an incorrect response(s) following a keyboard reset.
    <hr height='1' noshade id='quote'></font id='quote'></blockquote id='quote'>

I don't know what this means and Google is of little help.

Also where is Ati PowerPlay? This wasn't included when I received the machine and doesn't seem to be downloadable from Ati. I'm using mobility modder right now to install the latest Catalyst drivers.

    Update:

It wasn't a piece of software that needed to be installed, it was a BIOS option. Namely the Execute Disable bit. If I turn this on (default is off) the computer won't wake from sleep. Leaving it off fixes the problem but I thought it was great that the new Dothan CPUs had this enabled - sucks that I can't use it.

Hey John, do you me the hibernate function in the power settings? I find that if I let mine hibernate, when it start up it has a blue screen saying some stuff about protecting my computer or whatever and the only way to get rid of it is to hold the power button down and stutdown/restart.

Very annoying indeed. The other thing is that when you push the sleep button (I’ve got it set to go into standby) after a few minutes it shuts down, again very annoying.

    Cheers

No hibernation problems here (on the V6V). Haven't tried it with XD on though.

I just checked and yes the system changed back to what it originally was. i.e. to hibernate after 20 mins so hopefully it wont do it now.

How do you update the bios? Do you just do it through the Asus Web site? I’d rather my hibernate work properly than just trying to avoid it.

I’m pretty sure that my “Execute Disable” is not “enabled in the BIOS” So hopefully getting an update will do the trick.

    Thanks and Cheers

Thanks John but is the W3V for the V6V? or is it for the W3?

Thanks, I just want to be sure before I do something I might regret!
