    Hey everyone,

I am fairly new to notebook computers, but i am considering buying a desktop replacement notebook computer. I have been interested in the Asus W1000na.

Can anybody offer any comments as to the quality of this computer and how it might rate to other well known brands such as toshiba etc.

Also i was looking at the video card specs and quite honestly i was a little dissapointed (64 Mb ati 9600). Does anybody know if asus may be releasing a new w1 with a better video card in the near future, or if not, is it possible to customise the computer and put a 128Mb 9700 in?

    Thank you for any comments
    Adrian

The W1Na is great laptop... very stylish and powerful, however, you are right.
If you're going to want to play many new games, then the 9600 will hold you back.

As of right now, if you want a great DTR notebook from ASUS, then you should opt for the ASUS M6BNe (if you don't mind widescreen)... if you're not a fan of widescreen, then the M6Ne should be good. These notebooks are slightly less stylish than the W1Na, but they are more professional looking.

Pretty much all ASUS notebooks have great quality... so you can't really go wrong. Notebooks from other manufacturers to consider are:
    Acer Ferrari
    Acer Travelmate 4500 series
    Compal CL56

ASUS M6800Ne, P-M 1.5 Dothan, 512MB Ram, ASUS Combo drive, Samsung Spinpoint M 40G HDD with 8M cache, Mobility Radeon 9700

    thanks for the reply.

Do you think it would be wise to wait a while in the hope that asus may update the w1 or is this unlikely to happen in the near future.

The most i am prepared to wait would be feburary next year.

    Thanks
    Adrian

ASUS are planning on releasing a new line of notebooks in the new year, these will be based on the new PM chipset. However I believe these will be 12 and 14" models. Apart from that I haven't heard anything about an update for the w1n. I expect that they will upgrade it but there is no word yet as to when. Sorry.
As a side note, the gpu will only be a disadvantage for playing high end games like doom3 HL2. Also even with the best mobile GPU on the market, you would struggle to play any of these games at the WSXGA resolution of the w1n, this means playing high end games will require you to drop down to 1024X768 or 800X600. This will mean the games will look a bit fuzzy as LCD's don't like running at non-native resolutions. So if gaming is your main purpose I would suggest going for a lower resolution XGA screen. If your only a part time gamer, then the w1n will be a great choice, and the gpu will be fine for a bit of doom3/Hl2 at lower quality settings.
