First of all ... Hello to every member of Notebook review :)

I have bought a new laptop, it's my first laptop ever. It's an Asus W1G Dothan 1,6 Ghz, 512 MB ram, 60 GB 5400 rpm hd, R9700 64MB. Yes it's beautiful. But there is 1 thing that i still wonder about this laptop. It's the hard drive. When it is in use (read/write) e.g. when I'm doing normal office work like document editing, MSN messenger, i can hear a weak noise (tik tik) coming from the harddrive when it's in use. My friend has an Asus M6800... he told me that his hard drive doesn't do so when he is chatting and editting documents. I jus want to know that it's like that with other W1 with 5400 RPM HD or ... it's only with mine?

What brand is the HD? If it's a Hitachi there are several performance/power/noise tradeoffs you can make with the manufacturers acoustic- and power management software: Power Booster and Feature Tool. That ticking sound you describe sounds a bit like 'Silent Seek' (check the software) is disabeled (if it's a Hitachi drive, that is).

Thank you for a very quick reply :)

Yes it's a hitachi... can you tell me what i have to do to remove that annoying noise?

Which software do I have to download to remove it?

Feature Tool is the one to configure the drives acoustic management (as well as power management defaults). You'll have to make a bootable CD. I can't guarantee that this is it, but it sounds like it, so to speak. The HGST Travelstar drives I have seen (or more accurately heard) *have* made a audible ticking sound with 'Silent Seek' turned off.

I must second bugmenot on this one. Normal for Hitachi, but you can change it a bit.

While I can hear the difference I can't honestly say it's that big. I guess the impact of these settings will vary by person, disk model, notebook model, perception, personal taste, operating environment, asf...

Good luck finding settings to suit you.

    Hi again

I've done as you told. I changed the in the acoustic managerment to the most quiet setting. I don't think it helped a lot, I can still hear the sound. But I think I can live with it.

Btw. Justin, can you supply Asus notebooks with danish keyboard? I think I've heard somewhere that Asus Z70v won't be coming to Europe...

HxH, We can get keyboards in other languages, but we must special order them and need to order 20+ at a time..... We have a call for UK and Italian keyboards, but not much else. It would be cheaper to get a notebook and say import it if you had to... and then call up Asus and get a danish M6 keyboard... .same keyboard.... that would work fine.

Thank you. I actually found out that some shops in Denmark actually stock Asus Z70v with a diferrent name... Asus M6V.

Hit the link and you'll se that I know. :) Actually I think it's more like the barebook versions needing a seperate name (the Z-series) to separate them from the ensemble/retail models. Justin made a good case for why that is a good idea in a previous thread, even if it can cause some cross-continent confuison. Damn that global Internet!

Edit: BTW: Sorry to hear that the acoustic settings didn't make any difference for you.

Hmm .. i'm thinking about I could make Asus to exchange my Hitachi hard drive to another brand, like Seagate. Could it be possible? Will the noise be reduced?
