Hi, I have been wanting to buy a Asus laptop for a long time. I like the new W1VC-S016H that will be availabe here in the UK on 15th Dec.

    http://www.microanvika.com/product.asp?TXT=INFO&PNO=ASU14329

Though looking at the specs, its got a WSXGA+ screen, which I really want, but no color shine

Does anyone know the pros and cons of getting this notebook. Any feedback greatly appreciated!

Although the specification does not mention color shine, the descriptions at the link you gave says:

    Cinematic Visual Experience
Incorporated with the latest technologies from ASUS, the large 15.4” widescreen not only offers complete visual satisfaction but also beautiful displays for both work and play. The exclusive ASUS Splendid LCD Video Enhancement Technology, Color Shine high brightness and Crystal Shine glare-type LCD technologies present clear and sharp images in their true vibrant colors. Together with discrete graphics for 3D video performance, the W1Vc is the perfect entertainment center.

There is more discussion about this model at http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=32958 .

If you don't want the built-in TV tuner, an alternative that you may want to consider is the M6VA http://www.asuslaptop.co.uk/proddetail.php?prod=Asus_Laptop_M6VA-Q023P. This, I believe, is the equivalent of the Z70VA that is very popular. Or, maybe you want the very high resolution display of the W1VC-S016H.

Thanks John. I do like the M6Va, but I wish it had the WSXGA+ screen. I have wondered if it would be good idea to get the Z70VA shipped from US.

Just spoke to Asus UK, and they confirmed that screen has no color shine.

The shiny displays give better contrast which is most beneficial for watching movies. However, you also run the risk of getting annoying reflections.

well.. hmm don't get me confused

I think colour shine is glossy right??

I personaly don't think i would want gossy.

I saw 2 laptops yesterday and they were glossy screens, and man they looked like mirrors!! LOL, i can totaly see myself.

It should have crystal shine tho, which is a good thing, means high brightness and contrast.. something like that.. lol :asus:

anyways, do you mind contacting ASUS again and getting full proper details on the laptop.

Like what's the real speed of the HArd Drive, the site says 5400rpm, but im not 100% sure.
Also does it have Colour shine and Crystal shine, just make sure again, and whether it has either.
If possible the ACTUAL weight of the laptop.
Also is the optical drive REALLY SLOT LOAD?? or is it a traditional tray load drive.

    stuff like that, THANKs!

    Thanks in advance,

    MysticGolem

    OK rang Asus again. This are the specs I got from them;

    Intel Pentium M Processor 750 1.86GHz (2MB Cache)
    1Gb DDR2 533MHz (2 x 512Mb)
    100Gb HD (5400 RPM)
    15"4 WSXGA+ TFT (1680x1050) No ColorShine
    Crystal Shine
8x Slot Load Dual Layer Writer (DVD+-RW/+-R)
    8 cell Li-Ion Battery
Digital/Analogue Hybrid Tuner with Remote Control
Optical mouse, carrying case and headset

The sales person says that the weight is around 3.1Kg with the tuner. He can not be more specific otherwise.

Harrods, Selfridges and Micro Anvika should have them in stock by Tue 13th Dec, and they should be able to sell from Thu 15th Dec. The notebook is Special Edition???? And Asus expect to sell out soon!!!

^ post makes my eyes hurt with the crappy spelling and overuse of exclamation marks.

Hmmm, this laptop looks nice. Too bad I already bought mine, and there would be only a small noticable differance in performance. But they are still using ATI, which != Linux friendly.

    Some sad news :( :( :(

Got a call from Micro Anvika that the W1 will not ship this week as Asus are having problems delivering units.

Rang Asus UK, and they say that because their sales dept is currently closed (based in Hemel Hamstead), no chance of shipping for the next 2 weeks.

I guess it is understandable under the circumstances. Gutted though! Micro Anvika don't think the units will be in before mid Jan 06!!!!
