Hello, looking for some advice/help here please.
I have been a very happy W2 owner for over 2 years but now my laptop will no longer boot up![]()
First problem: The laptop was running as normal then the screen locked (image still visable). No keyboard or mouse input possible, so I turned off the laptop & rebooted. Same problem occured after around 10 mins of running time. On each subsequent reboot running time was reduced (I loaded XP in safe mode - same result) before laptop locked up.
Current situation: After turning on the laptop it doesn't even reach the Asus logo or POST. Nothing appears on the screen. The hard disk lights up for around 20 seconds but I can't hear any activity and it lights up even when booting without HD installed.
What I have done:
Connected HD to desktop pc & transfered data over. HD has no virus (AVG virus check) & worked fine.
Booted laptop up with
a) HD removed
b) RAM removed
c) battery removed & just power supply
Cleaned fan
Pushed the hard reset button on underside of laptop.
Tried booting laptop with windows xp recovery cd.
Connected second monitor & pushed fn-F8 to try & bring up second screen - no image.
Any ideas on what the problem may be, is it possible this is a power problem, with either the power pack or battery?
Any suggestions for anything else I could try or test?
As its out of warranty should I send it off to Asus to repair it (I am based in the NE of England) or would a local computer shop be a better option?
Many thanks for any help.
Chris.

I don't know whether this will help, but I've heard/read a lot of stories where symptoms like this case occurred and the reason is something to do with the processor overheating.

That's a possibility. Try checking temps before the notebook shuts off. You cleaned the fan, but did you clean inside the case too?
If it comes down to it, you should try to find a reputable, local reseller before sending your notebook away. Call Asus before doing anything though.
Which model W2 do you have? -
Try doin a power discharge by removing battery and adapter then hold down power button for 10 seconds, release and repeat again. Plug in again and try powering on. If that does nothing than its probably a bad system board.

Do try the suggestion above.
1. If you have cleaned it up thoroughly and eliminated overheating, then I think some hardware has broken down. Either it was damaged by overheating, or it has failed due to age & wear.
2. I have heard quite bad feedback about UK ASUS support, so perhaps a local store is indeed a better idea... -
thanks for all the replies
Ken Wind: its model W2U00VC
optomos: thanks for the suggestion but no luck unfortunately
E.B.E: I've also read bad feedback on UK Asus support so first I will look for a local repair option.
Looks like its a hardware failure then. -

Well if it fails before the ASUS boot screen, it can't be a problem to do with software. If its a build up and you have tested everything except the Motherboard and the CPU outside of the notebook. These are the only 2 components which could cause it to just not boot, its one of those.
I would also suggest a full clean out, because if it is progressive that could correlate to dust build up.
The UK ASUS support is quite good in fact, i once phoned them about an issue because i WAS going to RMA my machine, all i had to do was tell them the problem, they then sent me a form to fill in to start the RMA process. I would call that good really.. If all else fails just phone them up, but it will only be worth it if your under warranty. Otherwise it would be too expensive -
That being said, you can try to isolate discrete components. For instance, try to boot with 1 stick of RAM if you have two; without the ODD; and without the wireless mini-PCI card. The HDD is working, because you backed up your data. I don't see what else you could try.
If it's under warranty, perhaps getting it serviced is the best option.
