    Dear all,

I'm really not sure about getting the W3J due to some issues with the palm rest fading. Sone has told the theirs started to fade after 2 months. I really dont think i could put up with mine fading after a few months.

I know you can get replacements but i'm in the UK and over here it doesn't look like we can? Really wanted to get some feedback from W3V owners on this issue.

I could then always go for the V6J which i like very much, but it's 15" and i dont think it'll be very portable?

If anyone could post pictures of their palm rest that would be great!

    Thanks again all,

    Darren

That is a concern for me too.. If it holds up like my previous M6000, then it's all good. After a year of use on the M6000, the palm rest area looks almost like new except when examined carefully. But then I think the two palm rest are composed differently.

The V6 series is actually 1" longer or taller compared to the W3. It's weight is slightly heavier but not too significant with both equipped with an optical drive. So you might want to look into that. But for me, I still chose the W3 over the V6 for that 1".

I have sketched out on some A3 the dimensions of the W3, V6 and Sony SZ.

You're right the width of the W3 and the V6 is 1mm but the depth is around 1 inch.

I'm just really worried about the palm rest with the W3, if it starts to fade i'll go mental!!!

the V6j is just as portable as the w3v same weight but its also thinner than the w3j. if gaming isnt the most important the v6j is a much nicer pc better built more durable. and its just as easy to carry.

get sz and you wouldn't have to worry about your asus fading. I had asus before and it started to show slight fading after 6 month of use

the v6j will not fade. and is built better than the sony sz. The v6j is an awsome machine.

For the W3J palmrest, i'm sure you can buy some sort of protector like the type of protectors used for the iPod's scroll wheel.

'cause after you spent $1800 on a laptop you don't want a $50 part to look bad in a few months....

Bah I could care less. Impressing other people or myself isn't a concern.

I don't think it is about impressing people - it is more about "I paid $1800 for something that is going to wear down..." whereas the V6x is $100 more, and does not have that issue.

It is more of an engineering thing, like, why couldn't they improve the palm rest?

$150~ more on the W3j wouldn't really be that much impressive.

Its not like your gonna wear a hole into the mainboard. A spot of faded plastic is cosmetic. The only way that's gonna effect you is if you care what other people think or if it bothers you visually.

Adhesive back clear or reflective vinyl cut out in the shape of the palm rest would help in this matter and still look stylish if rubbed out palmrest affects you adversely. You can pick this stuff up on ebay i can even send you some mirror tint for a metalic looking palm rest. Common people have some creativity.

Your laptop likes to have worn palm rests - that way he does not look like a girly man /Schwarzenegger

Well if you actually read the thread and read the first post. The person mentions that they might be interested in getting the V6j and asked about its portability. so i was stating the while the w3j has the palm rest issue the v6j doesnt which is the other pc they were interested in. So maybe you should be the one that actually looks what people are talking about.

Eddie, I agree with you on this one. While if my palm rest faded I may be somewhat disappointed, it would in no way alter my decision to get the W3J. Your suggestion of applying some type of clear-coat on top of the palm rest to protect from wear would be the step I'd take if it was truly an isue I was concerned with. For those of you who are seriously concerned about this, you may also be able to go to an art supply store and purchase some "clear coat". Its a finish that is made for application on both models as well as certain drawings (i.e. charcoal) to prevent smudging, fading, or general wear and tear while not at all taking away from the appearance of the work. The only caveat with this is to be careful in the application - even though it's clear, I still wouldn't recommend getting any of it on your keyboard, screen, etc. Basically if used, keep it on the palmrest. Eddie's suggestion of the plastic applicator coat with the mirrored finish would be an ideal solution as well.

    Great ideas G2P!

Just a word of warning though, be sure to test the tint or vinyl first on a similar plastic because aligning the stuff is sometimes tough and if you make a mistake, sometimes they don't come back off so easily!

I'm getting my W3V soon... I'm probably gonna try some sort of adhesive... I hope vinyl is good. I want something that won't be uncomfortable while in use

I know people have their own opinion, but why not just USE the laptop and enjoy it? All things in life will show wear and tear after a while, and trying to keep things in perfect condition is not worth one's stress and energy in my opinion - And I consider myself to be a pretty meticulous/anal person.

With that said, if it really bothers you that much, just listen to Eddie @ Geared2Play. There are a number of adhesives and protectants out there. A friend of mine actually went as far as to professionally clear coat his computer.

I see your point, it's just that some people would probably enjoy their laptop more and not worry about it if they had some sort of protection.. plus it might help the resale value

I'm planning to keep this laptop for a couple years and.. right now I'm just thinking I'd regret it if I didn't do something now to protect it for later on... that's only if a vinyl or something doesn't take away the comfort of a normal palmrest

Duuuuude you must not have not seen the V6, I have seen the V6 and W3 side by side and I can tell you the V6 is very portable, just as portable as the W3J! the V6 is just as wide, a tad deeper and even thinner (at the front) than the W3J

Anyway when I saw the W3J it had a darker plastic, who's to say that this problem might have been fixed by using a different plastic?!

not to be negative.. but maybe since its darker.. the fading will be more visible due to the greater contrast.. [knock on wood cause im waiting for mine]
