    Hi..

    I have been looking at the Asus W3 for a while, but before any purchase will take place, I wonder how noisy the fan is.

    Does the fan stay on all the time? How loud is it when idle and full load?

    How is the noise compared to the Asus W5?

    Hope someone can help before I make my decision ;)

    I can't compare with the W5, but find the W3's fan to be among the quietest I have worked with in recent years. The fan comes on at 45C and once on, stays on (it might cut out if the room temperature is cold enough), but running at 1200rpm which is only audible in a quiet room.

    If the temperature reaches 60C then the fan switches to a slightly noisier 1600rpm and drops back once the temperature is down to 50C.

    There are several threads about W3V fans. You should also look at undervolting which reduces the heat produced by the CPU.

    Hope this helps,

    John

    in a quiet room is pretty annoying. in a semi-noisy room its perfect.

    I can as an avid member och silentpcreview.com tell you that the W3V is a quite motherfudger! The fan is always on but with undervolting the CPU with 46C as the lowest temp the fan only ramps up under heavy load.

    When I leave it with the lid down and stand 1 meter(4 feet) away from the computer and it's just idling I have a hard time telling if it's on or not.

    Under load the fan ramps up but without the irritating high pitched noise just smooth "wooshing" sound of air being pushed out.

    speedfan will work yes..... but unless you're in a sound studio (completely silent), you're not even going to really notice it. Now if you're running it all out and creating a ton of heat, then the rpms are going to pick up to the point that would irritate someone (if they were just doing email) ... but if they were gaming or doing something hardcore it would be something totally acceptable.....

    I don't know if that makes sense to someone who doesn't have one of these systems, but I think those who have them and know how they're going to act one way for email and another for halflife2, would totally get what I'm saying.

    It doesn't for me. Did you just start up speedfan and the fans show up and are configurable?

    PS. Sorry for being OT!

    What's "OT" ? Never saw that before....... I don't use speedfan on my W3 because I don't think it needs it, but many, many others have..... I was just mentioning that while posting everything else.

    OT is an acronym for Off Topic

    I searched and tried running Everest Home edition as suggested but it didn't help..

    Back to the topic at hand, SpeedFan cannot detect the correct SMBus on my W3V either, even with Everest installed and running. I would appreciate further guidance. Has any W 3V been able to get this working? Is there an alternative utility that could be substituted for SpeedFan?

    Seems that no one has got the W3V to work with speedfan... Does anyone get the fan to stop by using chc, or at least, is the fan running at lower rpm if you undervolt the cpu?

    If it's possible, I have not been able to. Does anyone know of another fan control utility that we could try?

    Just received my W3V... Is the fan supposed to start at 40C and stay on all the time at 1200rpm?

    The fan operation rules on my W3A are:

    1. 1200rpm: On at 45C and off at 40C

    2. 1600rpm: On at 60C and off at 50C

    Is is rare for the CPU temperature to drop below 40C once the computer has been on for some time, but with undervolting and light use it can take up to half an hour for the 45C trigger point to be reached if you are in a low ambient temperature (<21C). If you are in a higher ambient temperature then the computer temperature and fan usage will be higher.

    Is it possible in any way to get the fan to start at a higher temperature? I think 40C is too low... My other notebooks fans have not started util 50C is reached...

    The fan starts at 45C but won't stop until the temperature drops to 40C. No one has figured out how to over-ride the W3's fan settings. Personally, I find noise from the 1200rpm fan speed to be acceptable - you need a quiet room to hear it. The fan also provides cooling to other parts of the W3 since the air comes from somewhere, so maintaining some airflow should be beneficial to the whole machine.

    If you haven't gone down the undervolting route, then do so. This drops the power used and heat generated. I now have to run my computer for several minutes at full load to get the fan to switch to the faster speed. Previously it seemed to take less than a minute.

    Actually, I want to put the speed on max, so I don't have any more cooling problems.

    I haven't heard of any programs that can control the fan on the W3 yet...
    your best bet would be Speedfan, but I don't think it's compatible thus far. Maybe you can try to e-mail the author of Speedfan to see if he can get it to work...

    See if this will help you control your fan. If you have NHC installed:

    Open up settings.ini.

    Code:
    [FanTemp]
    [b][color=red]@01_FanOnTemp=40
    @01_FanOffTemp=37[/color][/b]
    @01_FanShowTray=0
    @01_FancntlEnable=1

    Edit those two lines to the temperatures you want. Reboot your computer. See if you hear the fan turn on when you hit the temperature when you set it to turn on.

    Works for me. Note those two values are the only one you edit in the Fan Settings.. don't touch anything else or you'll make NHC hang ;)

    whoa... no wonder everyone figures things are going crazy... the same section in NHC for me is:

    [FanTemp]
    @01_FanOnTemp=55
    @01_FanOffTemp=43
    @01_FanShowTray=0
    @01_FancntlEnable=0

    That must be the high-speed section of the fan control. I use a z63a though, maybe there's a bit of a change

    No dice, I'm afraid. Changed the values to

    [FanTemp]
    @01_FanOnTemp=45
    @01_FanOffTemp=35

    And rebooted, with no effect.
