About 2 weeks ago I noticed the screen was flickering on my 2 year old Asus W3A. It got worse and worse the point where the screens light completely shuts off if I put the brightness higher then minimum. Today the light wont stay on past startup so I have to hook it up to an external monitor to use it.

I replaced the palmrest and keyboard about 2 months ago, and it was my first time replacing parts on a laptop. I wasn't careful, and when I was finished the cables didn't seem to line up, and i had extra screws at the end. I obviously have to take it in for repair, can someone tell me what may be causing this though? and how much repairs like this should cost? I don't want to get overcharged and i'm no rush as I have a macbook as well.

    Thanks alot for any help.

What first comes to my mind is that you didn't screw the LCD screen's cable to the Mobo, which let the cable come loose from the mobo and eventually fall out.

There's a small CCFL board that makes a high voltage for the lamp that's lightning the screen, I've repaired a few back in time (when I had nowhere to buy them from)...last I've heard a friend getting new board for 40$ for his Dell (with part shipment), I think that's not expensive at all

Yes that's called the inverter board and I think it's the most likely culprit here. It's actually 20-30USD on the ASUS eStore (if you're in the US).

    I suggest you:

    a) order the inverter from the eStore
    b) follow the W3V disassembly guide the next time you open your notebook (check the Info booth for a link). Hopefully that'll get all their screws in the right places.
