When my Asus W3J is plugged in and on the Super Performance profile, the fan is always on. I put my hand near the vent and hot air is always blowing out. Is this normal? Even when just surfing the internet, the fan is on, but on low. When gaming, the fan is on, but on high. How come it doesn't turn off when I'm just surfing the internet? Is this normal?

If its on Super Performance and you aren't doing much gaming, put it on a lower setting.

    Or try NHC/SpeedFan

RMclock will also help. I dont really like power4gear since i feel like it does give you enough control over your cpu. If you download rmclock and turn on dynamic switching then your cpu should clock down to 1ghz when you dont need it and that should make the fan much quieter. I think no matter what you do the fan will always be on but it will be on at much slower speeds and be a lot less noticable.

Not sure why everyone hates p4g so much, I find it runs really well....but yes if you have it on super performance then the cpu will be locked at full speed...thus it dont matter what your doing your cpu will run hot and fast.
My fav setting is game for most situations....it allows dynamic switching and has very little/no effect on performance, but keeps heat down.

RM Clock and NHC also allow you to undervolt, bringing the heat down further and so that should keep your fan down.

When browsing there is no need to keep your laptop in Super Performance mode - Quiet Office should be fine.

    Some notes:
    - on lowest multiplier setting, you are not going to be able to undervolt the Core Duo.
    - the temperature at which the fan starts for the Duos is lower than for pentium Ms: 38 degrees for my T2400 V6J. The effect is that the fan will be always on on many such machines. Not much that you can do about it without endangering your CPU, I'm afraid. I'm pretty sure the designers knew what they were doing when they set those temperature thresholds.

On my machine the A8J with bios 207 fan comes on at 49 + degrees and switches off under 49. So my fan keep turning on and off. With bios 208 it starts up at 38 degrees and keeps spinning

I have to ask why it is set to super performance for browsing the internet? that is a bit of an overkill, i normally have mine set to quiet office all day and the fan runs lightly all the time, although it is so slow you cant even hear it!
Processor temp oscillates from 53-58 deg

The only time the fan dosent kick in, is when you first start up, untill about 10-15 minutes later when the preocessor warms up, but you never notice it.

Its better than my friends MBP, it has the same processor and GPU, the chassis is very hot after a day of light use, I think the W3J deals with the heat really well, yeas it has a hot exhaut, but at least the chassis stays relatively cool

AbN610- I have gone thru your same concerns with my w3j. The fans go thru a ~5 min continuous cycle no matter what. When gaming the fans will always be on high no matter what. When you are just idling and doing nothing, it sounds like there is air wooshing out but Im not sure if this is the fans. All this is completely normal, the w3j is a powerful machine blah blah blah (Im sure youve heard this).

If you want to control the fans coming on a little bit then I suggest getting a laptop cooler- you need one that has at least 2500 rpm. This controls the heat as you can imagine thereby controls the fans (somewhat). But the tradeoff is that the cooler is louder than the w3j fans. Honestly if its the heat that bothers you then get the cooler, but if its only the w3j fan sounds, just let the w3j do its thing. The fans are very capable of cooling off the machine. The hottest it will ever get with the fans on high is 65 C- The highest temp that the cpu can have is like 110 or 120 or something crazy.

I let windows run my power management while plugged in and I have it set to always on- this puts the cpu at 1.83 all the time. I also take the battery out and put it on my lapcool2 which seems to keep the temp down and the fans off. When I have it on battery I turn on p4g to battery mode- p4g is the only program that I have found that will decrease the cpu speed to 365 MHz. No throttling required. This keeps the temp down and the fans off but you cant really game too much with 365 MHz (basically just no gaming but everything else is fine). For the W3j specifically, RM clock allows you to throttle but it doesnt do much, and NHC doesnt really do much at all. I think it may be because they compete with the windows power management and might have something to do with the core duos.

Oh yah you can underclock the x1600 in the powerplay settings which also gets the temp down and gives longer batt life.

But basically the w3j is very happy with the fans working like that and you shouldnt be alarmed. If you have a touch of OCD like me then maybe get the cooler but otherwise you should just be happy with your w3j.

    thanks
    Dan
