Hi,
Does anyone know if it would be possible to upgrade the graphics in the W3J from an ATI X1600 to an ATI X1800?
Thanks

given the size of the laptop, i dought it.
-
The fact they have an X1600 256 in a 14" is first simply amazing now if there was an X1800 in there it would probbly melt into goo.
-
Not even sure it would fit. with a different cooling system and all. But its not upgradeble anyways.

thekingdavids, there are only a few laptops that can upgrade thier vid cards....and they are mostly located in Dell and some Clevo models.
Other than that, what you buy is what will be in there forever.
So don't conisder buying a cheap laptop and then upgrading the vid card.
On top of that, if the vid card can be changed, it usually requires to dismantle the entire laptop to put it in...so you risk your whole laptop and possibly the warranty.
Thanks,

OK, thanks a lot guys. I have just heard from asusnotebooks.co.uk that they have shipped my order and I should receive my W3J tommorow or Thurdsay|!!!!

*Jealous* Good luck and as said, let us know how it goes.

Benchmarks please when you get the chance!!!
As far as upgrading the vid card, I wished it were possible. I have a Sager 5720 with a GF7800GT. That thing is a beast but heavy and not very mobile. I was looking for a desktop replacement but now i changed my mind. What i want is a decent light portable multimedia gaming machine. I think the W3J might be the answer. -
The first thing I will do will test the benchmarks and then I will take tons of pics for you all.

King, What I would like to know first off.... is what the clocks of the X1600 are. I have a feeling they are going to be gimpy to keep the heat down and therefore that could result in lower benchmarks compared to other computers with x1600 (ie the MSI-1039). I hope that is not the case but it would not suprise me!

Danny at CanadaSys was able to do some benchmarks on a test machine while visiting Asus. He got 3876 3DMarks. I dunno what that translates to in terms of underclocking the x1600.

Wow, that is a ghetto W3J that he used. It is different than the US version. It only had a T2300 core duo with 512mb of ram compared to the T2400 and 1gig of ram used in the US W3J. Interesting. I would assume the benchmarks will be higher for the US version.
-
It was only a demo unit, it didn't even have a proper SKU(SKU on masking tape hahaha)
-
why the **** do u need x1800?????? r u a freaking pro gamer or something?
-
Alright, alright!!!!!!!!! I was just asking out of intrest as in a year or so this graphics card might be outdated and I wondered whether it was possible to upgrade but I have got my answer now. -
Is the graphic card underclocked? Or is it the original clock?
-
Won't know til its released.
-
When I get my W3J how will I tell if the graphics card is underclocked?
-
Download ati tool (a program) or unlock the overdrive feature of the CCC and it will tell you the clocks.
-
Dude, asking about a upgrade is a very valid question. Everyone would to know as much as they can about a purchase before dropping 2 grand on it. Lots of people want to enjoy ALL THE CAN IN A GAME, IE, oblivion full settings, and also they don't want there laptop to become outdated. You need to settle down buddy and go back to your games that look like **** because you can't set all the settings high because you aren't a "Freaking Pro Gamer". -
Ok, thanks, I will be doing that and I will let you all know how it goes.

The only thing that would reasonably increase the 3dmark score (despite your reference to gimpy) would be to increase the clocks in the BIOS they are shipping. a MINOR processor jump and a half gig of ram are not going to magically hand you 700 points in a benchmark. If that were the case people would upgrade processor and ram all the time. In reality, most peoples processors last about 2 GPU upgrades (on desktop models).
The score of ~3900 will be pretty accurate unless they drastically change the clocks of the card
edit - as a reference point, the 8200 scores ~4500 and the MSI ~4600 -
Actually a CPU increase will help plus more ram. Why more ram? Because the x1600 has 256 dedicated ram then 256 hyper memory. Since this is a graphic intensive test it is possible that some gpu is taking some of the ram therefore it would require windows the be using virtual memory which would slow the comp down. I can guarantee you the scores will change with the increase in ram and cpu, maybe not by a ton (same gpu of course) but it will change by a noticeable ammount (point wise, not fps wise, still will be a slideshow
)

Can the GPU be dynamically clocked, like the cpu is?
-
Yes, the ATI's come with a "power play" feature, i believe that is what it is called.

That's good to know - and ... are the clock settings for it configurable?
-
I would assume so, you probably have to either use ati tool or that NHC program for intel cpu's or you will have to unlock the overclocking in the drivers (if that is avaliable for notebooks I have no clue but I would assume so)

The graphics will not be upgradeable. Not getting this from a reputable source but i will bet my left toe you wont see any asus that have upgradeable video cards. Ooh yes they will be modular but the upgrades will never be available.

The Asus A8Jm uses the MXM module according to the Chinese review linked to in these forums.
