    What's up all?!

Been really damn busy so I haven't posted in a while, but I've been reading and keeping up with the times.

I got my email from PROPortable, too, and should be expecting mine tomorrow! Woohoo! I think I might take the day off to stay home and play :D Plus I want to be sure someone is home to sign for this baby so that it's not left waiting all alone and cold at the FedEx depot...

Can't friggin' wait! So much to do, so little time....

I almost wish I didn't get it tomorrow since I'm so busy ... UGH! No play time for me and my new toy. :( After work I've got a double header in my volleyball league and then have to run over to a softball game. Boy am I feeling a little sick right now. *cough cough* Might have to call in. I could always stay home and give the ol' W3j a real test and play some volleyball on that ... say some Kings of the Beach action? Not sure if the x1600 and speakers can handle those 3 fps graphics and the MIDI sound. Power computing at its finest.

Sounds like they'll come around 45% charged - as I understand it, that is best for transportation.

You'll have to charge if you want to run on batteries for a long time.

It's always suggested to fully charge them before the first use and that's supposed to be a good start to a healthy battery life, but I think it's an old wives tales, at least with my own experience over the years with the batteries Asus uses verses batteries in other things I own..... li-ion don't have a memory and no matter what you do, they're going to lose a little of their charge over time, regardless...... I bet 95% of people just start their puppy up, but if you want to jump the gun but make sure not to screw anything up either...... just plug it in and leave the battery out of the system and start it up if you're worried about anything at all.... but I wouldn't be.

Hey guys, for those of you that are receiving their W3Js here in the U.S.... could you tell me what brand is the HD that comes with it? I'm really hoping that it's Seagate, but I doubt it. Thanks! :)

Asus mainly uses hitachi and has for the last 5-6 years..... however, most of the core duos this year have come with Fujitsu's and the W3 is no exception. You won't see Asus putting Seagate's in their systems for a bunch of reasons - business wise (costs, etc) - but I personally perfer the Seagate's performance and power consumption and that's basically all that we put in our custom systems....

First of all seagate isn't manufractured in Taiwan, making it more expensive to buy for their company. Seagate has grown to be very reputable with its low rate of HDD failure and excellent 5 year warranty on their HD's vs 3yr standard (Hitachi, Fujitsu, Toshiba, Western Digital). Seagate drives use less power by a few percent and tend to run the quietest as well. They also usually come with large cache (16mbs on 5400 rpm) making them very fast, almost as fast as regular 7200 RPM's, while spinning less and making less heat, etc. Basically seagate has better architecture than any of the other manufracturers out there for HDs.

... I don't think I ever said that, because we did ship the optical bay batteries with the orders........ the main batteries aren't in yet. I did tell those who reordered their W3's last week not to order anything other than warranty cards because it was in the best interest of getting all of these notebooks out......... opening them all up and trying to find room for the extra accessories so they can ship in the same box is quite hard now that there are no carrying cases included in the box. So, the first wave of customers ordered whatever they wanted and honestly they took a long time to pack up. The rest of the orders flew.... so to give you the short answer - your battery is in with your computer.

First of all, there's nothing wrong with them...... every drive has it's pluses and minuses... but they all work and no one, except when they custom build a system is ever going to have that option. We offer it on our custom systems, but most places don't because it's about availability at the time for the most part.......

Seagate's run the best in my own opinion after a coming up on three years of use.... they run cooler and have battery battery life and in the 7200rpm tests, actually performed better than the Hitachi.

Hitachi's are pretty failsafe.... they run solid (these are IBM drives... hitachi always made them, but they went from ibm to ibm/hitachi to now just hitachi). The problem with them isn't really anything... it's just that the seagates run cooler with better battery life and retail seagates come with 5 year warranties while the retail hitachis come with 3 years....... oem stuff like asus would put in would only follow the oem's warranty anyway...

Toshiba...... well, we've all heard about the exploding drives... that's all them... I used to run a bunch of different drives for a couple years to find the best and toshiba's sucked like a five year old on a totsiepop...

Western Digital...... they make GREAT desktop enterprise drives in the raptors.... their notebook drives aren't anything special, but they're cheap. Similiar to seagate and hitachi, but the opposite, I wouldn't touch any of their desktop drives, but the notebook drives are great.

Fujitsu has always had a rep like hitachi and honestly their drives are basically very close to identical with them.... which is another reason Asus uses them, because the whole - both are made in tiawan thing...

A 5400rpm hard drive is close to just being a..... 5400rpm hard drive... it's not that big of a deal.

I wouldn't touch the drive unless you want to make new partitions... don't just format it to format it, becasue in my experience, the software on there is good and there is no other junk.....

Fujitsu has the lowest rma by far with us. Dont know what the indutry standard is but i guess its about 2% for laptop drives in the first year. Fuji is my personal fav. In the last 3 yers we have been selling and pushing them i can count the rma on my one hand fingers. Can't say the same for any other (especially toshiba) becuase i have lost count now.

Woohoo! Just got online confirmation my W3J was delivered! Too bad I'm stuck at work... grumble grumble..

Regarding formatting the HD, and forgive me if i'm being ignorant of previous posts, but does this create issues with the restore partition, or no? I'd much rather have a setup that others have mentioned as well, with ~15GB for Windows and the rest open for my schtuff.

    Thanks,

    Adam

My first post on my new w3j!!!

Wow is all I can say.

When I opened the box the first thing I noticed was how small and light weight it was.

Now I am going to convert to NTFS and then mess around with overclocking a bit.

Then its time to install Oblivion...I bought it 2 months ago but haven't been able to play it since this bad ass kept getting delayed.
